Rector’s Reflections

We are about halfway through our fall Inquirer’s class; we are using a

wonderful book called My Church is NOT Dying by Greg Garrett. Dr.

Garrett is a devoted Episcopalian and a seminary professor at Seminary

of the Southwest in Texas. In response to all the doom and gloom

messages we hear about the state of religion in our culture, he has written

an easily accessible and understandable book that points to the deeply

meaningful and important gifts of our church. (A few copies are still

available in the Bookstore for $13).

In his chapter on Worship and Community, Garrett writes, “Liturgy is

love, grace, forgiveness, community, and resurrection poured into

prayers and actions and symbols. Liturgy is a ceremony, a play, a story

we act out together in community. And liturgy is filled with beauty that

grows within us and draws us toward God, the source of all Beauty.”

WOW! We come with this wonderful tradition of gathered communal

prayer we call liturgy, and it hearkens back to the time of Jesus and in

some places even further. Is it “cool” or “hip”? Only insofar as ancient

things are, “hip”, and that is an emerging trend. What liturgy does is

take us into the heart of our faith, allowing the words and prayers of

generations and generations of Christians to live in our hearts and

consciousness, to dwell within us. Liturgy tells the story of our faith

through the liberal use of Scripture in the prayers and in the stories of the

Hebrew people, the epistles to the newly forming Christian communities

and of course, the story of our Savior, Jesus. Liturgy tells the story of

our faith through the gathering of the people of God who weekly, daily

pray together.

All that being said, liturgy is always the work of the gathered people.

We pray together, we sing together, we eat together. Personal prayer is

vital but so is communal prayer! None of what we do together on

Sundays is about saying our own private prayers. This is about the

whole community giving praise and worship as well as confessing and

repenting. Nor is it transactional; it’s not about what we get out of it.

This is prayer, simple, beautiful, communal and based in generations of

prayerful followers. We give praise to the God of Love and Beauty, and

we joyfully join the communion of saints who have gone before us as

we lift our voices together each and every Sunday. ~ Rev. Susanna+

Holy Trinity Book Store Book Review

A Dog Walks Into a Nursing Home by Sue Halpern

Paperback 312 pp. $16.00 Riverhead Books, 2013

With her daughter going off to college and her husband traveling a

great deal on his job, author Sue Halpern took on the task of getting her 7-

year-old Labradoodle, Pransky, certified as a therapy dog, an interesting and

amusing achievement in itself. Pransky was wise and smart and passed the

test, and so began their weekly visits to the local nursing home. Pransky

was most warmly welcomed, and Sue, following along at the end of the

leash, came to know and love the residents as well, causing her to do a great deal of reflection.

So the book is more than a treatise about taking dogs to visit nursing homes—something I do myself—

or about the wonder of dog/human insights. It is a Christian book exploring the virtues of love and faith and

charity, even of hope. It is about giving something of ourselves (and our dogs) back to God.

And there is humor—how can you not laugh at Pransky chasing a real live lamb around and around a

group of wheelchairs, a minister having brought the lamb in for an Easter service he was conducting.

Thanksgiving Eve Prayers and Pie

Wednesday, November 25th

at 7:00 PM First Lutheran Church, 1551 S. 70th Street

Let’s join with our neighbors at First Lutheran for a special Thanksgiving

Eve Service at their church. We have so much to be thankful for as we remember the source of all our blessings, the

grace of God. And when our prayers are over, we have been invited to stay for pie. Another good reason for

prayers of thanksgiving!
