GOOD I\IEWS
Exodus 34:4b-5, 8-9 / z Corinthians e3:rr-r3 / John 3:16-:.8
When I was a child, the mystery of a God who is three-in-one was explained
by that commonly used (if somewhat inaccurate) symbol, a tl-rree-leaf clover.
Since then, many people have attempted to put the real-ity of Trinity into
words that try to explain: Lover, Beloved, Love Outpoured or Source,
Wellspring, and Fountain, as well as the more common expression of Father,
Son, and Holy SPirit.
Still another approach is to stand in front of a mirror and see yourself as
Someone's child, someone's parent, and someone'S spouse all'at the same
time-and yet see one person standing there.
These examples begin to tell us something of the Trinitarian mystery, but
they cannot contain the whole of it. God simply is, and the closest we can
come to God's essence is to talk about God's relationship in and of God's
self. But words have their limits. ls there something in our own experience
where God reveals a little of this mystery? Why is it that we reach out forothers, yearn for love, or seek God in prayer?
Genesis tells us we're created in God's image. lf God is relational; then we
must be as well. We are created to be in relationship, to know ourselves as
connected. The New Testament is filled with that language: Jesus is our
brother; we are adopted children of God. We areto love one anotheras God
.loves us. We are to become one in God'
ln the experience of love and connectedness and in the experience of being
part of God's family, we will come to know the mystery of God a little more
clearly. MARY KATHARI N E DEELEY su ndayb ulleti n @ li guori. org

de ar PAD Rf,
When I was young, we neuer hnd eucharistic deuotions.
WLty are they so popular now?
Prior to the Second Vatican Council, many Catholicsfound solid food for their spiritual lives in eucharistic
devotions, which include visiting the Blessed Sacrament(eucharistic adoration), attending Forty Hours devotion, and
assisting at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
FIowever, as the modern liturgical movement began
picking up steam, scholars and theologians began questioningthe amount of energy and attention going toward eucharistic
devotion. They urged us to focus our spirituality more clearlyon the Mass-the action of the sacred liturgy and theEucharist itself-and to understand that all eucharisticdevotions outside of the sacred liturgy are meant to direct us
back to the action of the Mass, the eucharistic sacrifice, and
its high point of Communion.
The drop-off in eucharistic devotions afterYatican II can be
positively understood as an attempt to take the insights ofliturgical reform seriously and to develop a more liturgicalpiety. At the same time, the resurgence of eucharistic
adoration is a worthy retrieval of a beloved practice that bothscholars and the faithful understand as complementing a full, conscious, and active participation in the sacred liturgy that is
the "source and summit" of our lives.
