Father’s Day Special Collection for Diocesan Priests’ Care & Support

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Father’s Day, June 15-16, 2019, there will be a special collection to care for our infirm and retired priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several retired priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ’s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and retired priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of the Father’s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Statement of Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, Diocese of Joliet Regarding Passage of Illinois Senate Bill 25

The misnamed “Reproductive Health Act”, Senate Bill 25, is a horrific piece of legislation that will lead to more children dying through the violent act of abortion, even at a point when they are able to survive outside the womb. Science indicates that life begins at conception, and to deny the life of certain human beings at young ages is an attack on human rights. No person’s life should be in jeopardy simply based upon his or her age. Only in the womb do our laws allow some humans to be accorded the full rights of personhood and some not. Additionally, this legislation is not in the best interest of women as it removes abortion clinics from regulations for serious medical procedures. The Church is committed to upholding the dignity of women but does not believe that abortion is a solution when challenging situations arise. Rather, working towards a society where both mother and child are cared for is the true path of justice and compassion. I am aware that some of the legislators who voted in favor of this legislation believe that it violates their own conscience. Yet, for them party loyalty, even on such a weighty moral issue, has seemingly trumped conscience. Abortion is an illogical and inconsistent policy for anyone who stands for human rights. To allow one person to decide whether another person lives or dies is even more capricious than the death penalty or war. Ironically, as Illinois expands the legal and even constitutional right to abortion, many of its neighboring states have moved to restrict abortion. Clearly, we are a divided society on this issue. The Catholic Church stakes its position on the ultimate belief that God creates every human person and endows each of them with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Fathers for the Future

Ralph Schuster and Andrew Hackley do not seem to have much in common upon meeting them. Ralph has been a member of St. Joan of Arc for over ten years, has been happily married for 51 years, is a former seminarian, and was a butcher. Andrew is a young father, who has been a member of St. Joan of Arc for three years, and is married with two young children. What they have in common is that their primary vocations as fathers have led them to be valued and popular catechists for the children who attend our Religious Formation programs. Ralph and Andrew both became catechists for similar reasons: they wanted to give back in some way. Ralph wanted to share what he had learned as a father, and Andrew wanted to become a better father and catechist for his own children. Andrew said, “I had no idea how to express my faith with children… I needed to reconnect with the basics of Catholicism.” The wonderful thing about being a catechist is that you learn more about your faith as you teach it. Ralph and Andrew both teach 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in mixed classes. They enjoy the conversations and engagement of that age group. Ralph especially enjoys when he gets into a lesson with his class and they actively participate. They both seek out other learning activities in our parish. Ralph is an active member of the Tuesday morning Bible studies, and Andrew enjoys the Cloud of Witnesses Saints series. He even found a love for St. Padre Pio during the series, finding a “child-like faith of God.” Both men agree that all you need to be a catechist is a willing heart. When we asked them what they would say about being a catechist, Ralph replied, “Give it a try! It’s fun and a way to give back to our Church.” Andrew says, “Church communities thrive when people dive in and become an active community contributor. Choosing to help the next generation draw closer to the Lord is something EVERY parishioner is qualified to do and won’t be something you regret!” Both of these fabulous fathers have learned what Pope Francis meant when he said, “evangelization evangelizes the evangelizer.” Their desire to give back and to pass on their love for Jesus and the Catholic Church to future generations has really given them a deeper and stronger faith. To join the fabulous team of catechists here at St. Joan of Arc, please contact Dolly Pointner at 630.353.4550 or [email protected].

Before the tremendous throne of your majesty, at the exalted place of your divinity, the majestic seat of your glory and the sublime throne of your sovereignty where your servants the

Cherubim continuously sing hymns and where your glorifiers the Seraphim sing unceasingly the "Sanctus," we bow down with fear, adore with trembling, give thanks, and glorify you

without ceasing, at all times, O Lord of the universe, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for all ages.
