Greetings from IIM Calcutta!

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the placement activities of our Institute.Through the pages of this brochure you will get a broad overview of our programme,activities and the placement process.

We started the Post Graduate programme for Executives (PGPEX) in 2006 and today theprogramme is in its tenth year. Faculty members and other stakeholders of the Instituteenvisaged the need of starting a specialized full time programme, designed to select andincubate people with exceptional intellectual and leadership potential to meet today'sglobally challenging business environment where they can remain competitive by thinkingstrategically and tactically. We have also tried to keep the curriculum updated keeping inmind this changing business environment, and have recently restructured the PGPEXcurriculum, which was made operational from the Academic Session 2015-2016. Individualresearch projects, introduction of pre-work and workshop modes of teaching, live projectswithin a course have been encouraged in the revised curriculum. In 2014, the PGPEXstudents with their rich and diverse domain experience launched the first edition of thePGPEX online newsletter, "PGPEX Business Review".

The school has taken the initiative to earn accreditation from top global agencies. TheInstitute has recently received the AACSB accreditation, one of the most coveted amongB-schools, which has been earned by less than five percent of the world's businessprogrammes. It takes a great deal of self-evaluation and determination to earn AACSBAccreditation and an international accreditation gives us recognition that we are doingfundamentally well. In addition to AACSB, IIM Calcutta has also received accreditation fromAMBA in March 2014 and very recently, the EQUIS Accreditation Board at its meeting inBrussels, Belgium, has awarded the EQUIS Accreditation to IIM Calcutta for a period of threeyears.

Thus now we have become the first Indian business school to achieve the 'Triple Crown'in accreditation, i.e. accredited by all the three major accreditation agencies in the worldfor management education - AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. Through accreditation, IIM Calcuttahas not only met specific standards of excellence, but also made a commitment to ongoingimprovement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver high quality educationto its students.

PGPEX is the one year, full-time, residential, post-graduate programme in management atIIM Calcutta. It has been designed for executives with substantial work experience andleadership potential. The programme, currently in its tenth year, has created leaders whohave created immense value for business, society and in their own careers in India andabroad. Great business leaders not just enhance the performance of their organizationsbut they also inspire people around them and make significant impact in the wider society.

The extremely competitive selection process followed in the programme ensures that onlythe very best in terms of aptitude, leadership potential and experience qualify. It is structured to harness and synergize management understanding andtechniques through courses offered by our in-house and international visiting faculty. Thisis further augmented with consistent engagement with industry leaders and CEOs whoshare with the participants their rich insights and practical underpinnings. Our eminentfaculty strives to apply industry relevance and academic rigor to our curriculum to groomfuture business leaders. We aim to supplement theories learnt in the classroom with practicaland experiential learning offerings such as International immersion program that enablesstudents to understand the nuances of global business. AboutIIM CalcuttaThe Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, or IIMC, was born outof a partnership between the industry and academia, to pioneermanagement education and research in India. Established in 1961 bythe Government of India, in collaboration with Alfred P. Sloan Schoolof Management (MIT), the Government of West Bengal, the FordFoundation and Indian industry, IIMC was the first of the prestigiousIndian Institutes of Management. IIMC's rich history of 50 years hasseen it move from strength to strength, continually striving to establishnew norms of excellence, growing into an institution of global reputeand a prominent member of the premier B-School community in theAsia Pacific region. It has seen consistently high ratings in terms ofrecruiter perception and its students have served as successfulambassadors in reputed firms across the world.

Set in a 135 acre picturesque campus on the outskirts of Calcutta,IIM Calcutta has always attracted the best of students, faculty andindustry partners. It was truly a delight teaching the PGPEX Classof 2017! They have high energy, a positiveattitude and initiative, both in the classroom,and outside of it. In class, the students displayeda keen interest in learning and contributing todiscussions and case analyses. In addition toclassroom learning the students have plungedinto campus activities and made their presencefelt, be it on the sports field, business casecompetitions or in undertaking social initiatives.For me, these qualities indicate good leadershippotential!

PGPEX classroom interaction is one of the mostrewarding experience at IIM Calcutta. Thecontribution of the participants in the classdiscussion and peer learning is a significantcomponent in their academic process. This islargely due to the rich diversity of their industrybackground that adds to the rigor of theclassroom experience. The level of engagementis very different in a PGPEX classroom. Iinteracted with this class on a course onOperations Management. It was amazing to learnthe clarity of thought process, the robustnessin their ideas and decision-making approach,and overall willingness to contribute to thelearning.

Today's contemporary business management mandates upon the young industry leaders to harness a globaloutlook and greater understanding of work environment in diverse cultural settings. As a part of PGPEX curriculum,students participate in an international immersion program through a partner B-School in an organizing country.This year 35 students from the PGPEX 10th batch went through this program for two weeks on “Doing Businessin Germany” at Mannheim Business School in Germany.The program was designed to give participating students an introduction into the European economy, variousreasons behind Germany’s rise within and outside Europe and various cultural, and geopolitical drivers that areintegral in understanding current economics in Europe.Students attended sessions driven by highly qualified faculties with the special focus on European economicintegration, international business management with German perspective, marketing and operational strategiesof European firms and how German Mittelstand companies are reviving German economy. The learnings in theclassroom were further reinforced by experiential learning through visits to organizations such as – SAP Bosch,German Chamber of Crafts and Academy and hidden champions of German SME industry such as Hager andKärcher. These industry visits allowed students to get an insight into German business best practices, organizationwork culture, new and emerging technical adaptations in German organizations and how these approaches areemployed to resolve complex challenges.Participating students also got ample opportunity to interact with multiple German business leaders. Networkingevents with students further provided an opportunity for peer learning and build a strong relationship with thoseprofessionals. Through such activities students could grasp some important and compelling socio-culturalaspects of “Doing Business in Germany”.The immersion program thus helped students to transform their ideas and business perspectives about workingin a competitive global environment and would go a long way in helping emerge as successful leaders in theindustry.

Immersion programme being an important part of the PGPEX curriculum gives students an opportunity to getexposed to other global universities. This year, 33 students of PGPEX visited Foster School of Business, Universityof Washington at Seattle for a 2-week module on “Global Strategy and Leadership”. Fosters is a 98-year oldbusiness school and ranked number one in northwest by US News and World Report in 2015.

The program started with a discourse on marketing in a cross cultural context and the challenges associatedwith it. This was followed by organizational strategy. The intense case discussions charged and propelled thestudents to explore why firms succeed and why firms fail.

Proximity to the industry is an advantage in Seattle. Students had the opportunity to walk into a next generationretail store and witness how technology is being harnessed to improve customer experience. Students visitedBoeing, Paccar, Microsoft and Costco wholesale. The visits helped students understand some aspects of howthese companies have established and maintained their business leadership. These companies have executedtheir business strategy and operational efficiency in different areas without diluting their customer centricapproach. Executives of these companies reiterated the importance of values and organizational culture increating a formidable position. The executives also discussed how globalization in business and disruptivetechnologies has impacted their decision making in various ways.

While the first week was about business and organizations, the second week was about an individual. The leadershipseries enabled every participant us to recognize their decision-making style. Things crescendoed in the talk oninnovation and creativity as students learnt on how to overcome the forthcoming challenges in an innovative andoptimal way. The 2-week programme also made students more culturally aware and introduced an element ofcultural sensitivity for decision making in a global business environment.

IIMC Different StrokesManagement Centre for Human Values (MCHV)IIM Calcutta has a vision to emerge as an international centre of management education with its foundation onIndian ethos and values. Management Centre for Human Values is a significant milestone in achieving this visionand holds up to humankind contemporary adaptations from the perennial and vibrant corpus of Indian philosophicalwisdom. The centre offers courses in Business Ethics, Value-based Leadership, NGO Management, CorporateSocial Responsibility and also conducts short duration Management Development Programmes and In-CompanyProgrammes, and Workshop on these themes besides publishing an international bi-annual journal viz the Journalof Human Values through the Sage Publications.

Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI)The Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) at IIM Calcutta is an initiative to achieve greater understandingand analysis of these areas and to stimulate their development for societal benefit. CEI's vision is to grow as aprogram of international renown, where students, faculty, alumni, industry and policy makers collaborate, learnand innovate. CEI is involved in entrepreneurial research and case development in collaboration with industry,to support creation of new ventures and experience sharing with established entrepreneurs, to enable buddingentrepreneurs to make a smooth transition from idea to implementation.

Innovation Park (IIP)IIM Calcutta's efforts towards promoting Entrepreneurship and creating an eco-system to nurture start-ups hasgot a fillip recently as it has incorporated on 22 August 2014 a not-for-profit company, called IIM CalcuttaInnovation Park (IIP) as a section 8 company under the Companies Act 2013. The main objective of this newlyformed company is to promote start-ups in five broad areas - healthcare, education, clean technology, lifestyleand analytics. The newly formed company has planned to raise seed fund to the tune of Rs.10 - 20 crore fromour alumni to provide initial seed money to the start-ups incubated at IIM Calcutta.

Financial Research and Trading LabThe Financial Research and Trading Lab (the Finance Lab) at IIM Calcutta was set up in November 2008 toundertake cutting edge research on financial markets using real time high frequency data from financial marketsof India and around the world. The Finance Lab uses a simulator to simulate trading in financial markets usingactual prices. In 2011, there was a grant from the Union Finance Ministry of Rs. 20 crore. The Lab has sinceaugmented its physical infrastructure and procured international databases & softwares. The Lab has over adozen Bloomberg terminals and over 78 terminals. The terminals are loaded with a trading simulator and containdata from six markets NSE- Cash and F&O BSE-Cash, NCDEX, MCX and Currency futures.

Campus Visit PolicyCompanies may visit the Institute before the scheduledplacement days to conduct industry talks anddiscussions.

Following guidelines shall be applicable in this context:

l Any on-campus activity which is not a part of regularacademic curriculum is defined as company-participant interaction. Companies can conduct amaximum of two interactions for PGPEX (slot forinteraction will be assigned on a first come firstserve basis)

l All campus activities must be scheduled inconjunction with the PGPEX placement committee.

l The fixed joining fee per student is charged for theservices offered to the company throughout thecourse of recruitment from the campus.

l All placement charges should be settled within onemonth of students joining the organization. Theinstitute however does not guarantee that thestudent will join the company or will remain in thejob for a specified duration of time.

l Service taxes, if applicable, will be charged in additionto the fees.

Communicationl Recruiters are required to communicate the offer

details to the PGPEX Placement Committee in orderto enable the Committee to streamline the placementprocess for both recruiter and participant.

l We advise our students to consider each opportunityas a long-term commitment and to accept offerswhere they can make contributions over time. Theplacement committee understands your need tofinalize business planning and encourage studentsto make their decisions as quickly as possible. Weencourage you to stay in close contact with thePGPEX Placement Committee throughout the
