Growing up here, I remember enjoying August services because they had a more relaxed atmosphere—it really did feel like a “Homecoming.” It was nice to dress more casually at Sunday services in August—although, my dad’s idea of “more casual” was not wearing a tie! And, yet, even though it was relaxed, I always felt Jesus in the worship. I remember looking forward to going to church and hearing the Circuit Riders play, and, there were always special programs and guest preachers that made the Homecoming month seem special. It was a time for our church to grow, as we received so many visitors each and every Sunday. As a dancer, and someone who really appreciates music, I also enjoyed the special musical services during August. Ralph always seemed able to put together super Sunday music for the Homecoming month, and he made sure to always include fantastic guest musicians! The Worship services were always packed and the energy was high. You could feel God’s presence as everyone enjoyed the special music and guest speakers. I remember Don Moen joining the Circuit Riders and laughing and singing with them with his wonderful voice! One other guest musician I’ll always remember is the fabulous guitarist, Doyle Dykes. What he could do with the guitar was so special. I felt like God was speaking to me through his guitar strings. He always had funny and sweet stories he would share about his Christian faith and his family. When Ralph asked me to do a video testimony for this year’s Homecoming, I was excited and humbled to share my story. It will be an honor for me to give back to the church that has meant so much to me my whole life. I hope it conveys to the congregation what my faith means to me. I have had to trust God many times in my life without knowing why He was leading me down a certain path. But as always, He has a reason for everything. The other events for this year’s Homecoming sound so exciting, I can only hope I will be able to be there for some of this year’s Homecoming services! HOMECOMING AUGUST 2016 ISSUE

AUGUST 2016 ISSUE

Every year the town where I grew up has a week-long celebration called Homecoming. It is a time when families who have moved away come back to town. A carnival comes to town during this same week and serves as the main gathering place for families to reunite.

I like to celebrate Homecoming a little differently. I like to go for a run through downtown, past the school (K-12, all in one area), and end up at the old cemetery. As I run past these familiar landmarks, memories flood my mind. I remember my first job, my first date, and my last football game. I think about how I got from where I was, to where I am now. For me, Homecoming is about returning to your roots, remembering who you are, and where you came from. Ultimately, God uses this time to refocus my life on Him.

Our 2016 NewSong Homecoming will focus on three building blocks—which serves as the foundation of our Faith: Trust, Initiative, and Identity. Each week a member of our Next Generation team will discuss one of their building blocks. We will learn about their ministry, and how they utilize their building block foundation to strengthen their ministry. They remind us to strengthen these building blocks in our own lives.

n SUNDAY, AUGUST 7: Ashley Walker, our Director of Children’s Ministry, will discuss the first steps in our faith development – Trust.

n SUNDAY, AUGUST 14: Jeremy Steele, our Next Generation Minister, will discuss Initiative: taking the first steps to putting our faith into action. The Great Romance band will lead us in worship. You can listen to their music at thegreatromance.com.

n SUNDAY, AUGUST 21: Mike Rollins, our Director of Youth Ministry, will discuss how we find our Identity in Christ.

Worship Services

Can’t make it to church? Watch services online at christumcmobile.com/livestream

Our family has been so blessed in how the Christ UMC family has welcomed us back into the fold. We are so grateful for the ways that Jeff, Norma,

the staff, and all of you worked so hard to pave the way for us to enter into this new role. The cards, gifts, food, and visits to our new home have been such wonderful signs of grace and welcome. One family even took us on a nighttime alligator cruise! Our first Sundays at the church were so much fun. We enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, and beginning the process of making new ones. We were especially thankful for the excitement and joy we felt on Sunday, July 10, as I preached for the first time to our combined services. We had the opportunity to worship in NINE of our worship services in just our first two weeks. It is obvious that the Holy Spirit is moving and active as our people gather to worship. The beautiful

variety of our services and the amazing talent being offered to God is breathtaking! I’m so excited about our August Homecoming Sundays this year. Augusts have always been special at Christ UMC. Our staff has planned some amazing things in our Sanctuary services and our NewSong services to make sure this year is special, as well! Part of what makes Homecoming Sundays great is because the people of Christ UMC love inviting people to come to church. I hope you will invite friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers to come along. We will be doing a special sermon series on the homecoming stories of the Bible in our Sanctuary services. You don’t want to miss Worship in August! Again, thank you for your incredible welcome. We are so humbled and honored to serve Jesus here with you!

Peace, Rob

By Alissa Hadden, Youth Ministry InternNature has always been one of the most powerful ways for me to be moved by God’s love and mercy. Mountains, sunsets, rivers, trees, gardens, and rainstorms should point us to our Heavenly Father, our Creator who promises to always provide for our needs. These wonders can become our cathedrals, our classrooms, and our places for fellowship and growth.

One thing that I love so much about nature is that it speaks depths of truth that I can never find the right words for. It doesn’t speak verbally through words, but rather with movement and beauty. It always worships our Father, reminding me to continually do the same. The different facets of nature never cease to depend on one another, such as tomato plants needing bees and flowers for pollination or trees needing precipitation and the sun for proper growth. Nature is so mysterious to me, and it always reminds me that God is in control of my life.

Just as pieces of nature depend on one another, we as humans need to learn from each other and help each other grow. I encourage you to begin seeking God’s promises through the Creation that surrounds us everywhere we go.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WEEKLY SUMMER PROGRAMFor more information, visit christumcchildren.com n SUNDAY MORNINGS All Sunday School classes are located in Building E.

By Sam Taylor Gochey, Associate Children’s MinisterAs a new school year quickly approaches, our minds are flooded with a mile long “to do list” that has to be completed before the first day of school. As parents we want them to be fully prepared as they walk through those school doors with their nicely pressed uniforms, new backpacks, and all of the necessary school supplies that are needed for them to get through the day. Some will be fighting back tears watching their little ones walk through that classroom door, while others will be sighing with relief that another school year has begun. With all of that said, the most important way to prepare your child for school is to let them know that they are loved and that God is with them.

While academic growth is a very crucial part of your child’s development, let’s not forget the importance of their spiritual growth.

God clearly puts the responsibility of our children’s spiritual growth on the parents. The first day of school for most of us marks the beginning of a very busy schedule. Days will be filled with homework, and numerous extra-curricular activities that will make you feel as though you are running in circles. Through all of this chaos, we must not forget to make time in our daily schedules for family devotion. Families are busy and sometimes getting to sit down and have dinner together is nearly impossible. As parents, we need to make the choice to take a time-out, no matter how busy the day, and have family devotion. By doing this, we are choosing as a family to have God as the first priority in our lives. What we as parents do today will have a great impact of the choices of our children later in life.

By Rick Warren - For more information, visit danielplan.com. Discipline is about creating habits. We need to create small habits in our lives that together build up into big results. These habits might be sleeping a bit more, moving our bodies, calming our minds, eating a little differently, adding a few new foods that are positive, refocusing our thoughts and replacing them with God’s Word—any habits like these will day by day shift us into a profound capacity for self-care and healing. The discipline of those small habits will add up to a thriving life. One of the most fruitful habits we can form in the areas of food and fitness is to add joy to the way we move and the way we eat. When we experience movement as joy, we celebrate the fact that our bodies can move in a particular way. Movement becomes an offering of our bodies to the God who made them able to move in so many ways. Likewise, taking joy in trying a new food lets us celebrate the abundance God has created. We can look forward each day to the new pleasures God has in store for us. Food for Thought: Small habits lead to ever greater enjoyment of the life God has blessed us with. For more information visit danielplan.com.

A THRIVING LIFE

It’s time for us to get excited about the incredible gift we have: The Bible. Knowing and understanding the scriptures not only helps us form our beliefs, but hear the voice of God challenging us to live lives of faithfulness in our world.

In August, we will host a two-day Bible conference with one of the world’s leading Bible scholars and our own teaching pastors to help unlock and unleash the power of the scriptures in our lives. Dr. Ben Witherington has written over forty books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top Biblical study works by Christianity Today. He is also the author of our fall small group focus on the book

of Romans. Along with many interviews on radio networks across the country, Witherington has been seen on the History Channel, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, The Discovery Channel, A&E and the PAX Network.

This year he will be giving special focus on the book of Romans while our own teaching pastors offer Bible breakouts on everything from Biblical archaeology to the power of the Psalms. It is not often that we get the opportunity to learn so much in two days and engage with a world-renown scholar. Please join us for the whole conference and invite your friends to come along!

DIXON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

JULY 24 - AUGUST 8With the opening of the 2016 – 17 school year upon us, the families and faculty at Dixon Elementary will once again be enriched by our assistance in providing much-needed school supplies in this high-poverty area. School supply lists can be found in the Sanctuary Gathering Area and the Christ Center Recreation entrance. Maybe even more important will be the prayers and words of encouragement that you will write on the back of the cards that you have picked up listing the requested supplies for the teacher that you chose.

Donations are due by 12:00 P.M. on MONDAY, AUGUST 8 near the Recreation Desk in the Christ Center. Volunteers are needed in the Christ Center on August 8 beginning at 8:30 a.m. for separating/loading the donations, and on August 9 at the church at 9:00 a.m. for delivery and unloading of supplies at Dixon.

Helping the children and families of the Dixon community is a highly rewarding outreach of the church! Share in the joy of helping others!

WHY DO WE GIVE?Rob Blackwell, Church AdministratorAs Christians, we are taught in both the Old Testaments (OT) and New Testaments (NT) that we should give financially to God’s work through the church. But in talking with people, I have found that we give for different reasons. Many people give because they are committed to the work being done in the church and see the practical need. I include myself in this category. The church can’t accomplish its important work without funds to operate. Many people give in obedience to God’s Word. I include myself in this category as well. Sometimes people ask if tithing is taught in the NT, or if it is an OT law that Christians can ignore. I really believe the NT supports the concept of the tithe, but I’m not sure whether its identity as a “law” is the main point. Is prayer a law, or reading the Bible, or going to church, or feeding the poor? No, yet we don’t debate these issues, we just do them, both in obedience to and as a faith response to God’s love. So what is the “main point” of giving? Since God primarily seeks to gain our hearts, and since He knows our hearts tend to follow our treasure (Mt 6:21), I believe God instituted giving as a way to help us with that. He asks us to give to Him first, before our bills and toys, and to give in an amount significant enough that it is a sacrifice for us to do so. When we do that consistently, our hearts are pulled toward God, our relationship with Him is strengthened and our spiritual health is improved. It’s also a wonderful bonus that God’s people are blessed and His work is accomplished in the process!
