HOPEstarts hereHouse of Ruth

With you, women and children found safety and

stability after abuse, violence, and chaos.

With you, moms built skills for self-sufficiency, family bonds

were strengthened, and children attended the same school for

more than a month or two at a time.

With you, infants and children achieved critical developmental targets so they can start school

prepared and lower their chances of becoming homeless

in the future.

With you, women had tools to cope with mental illness and often unspeakable, enduring trauma, and support as they

reached toward new goals for independence.

HOPE STARTS HEREDear Supporter: It was 40 years ago last fall that House of Ruth first opened our doors to homeless women and survivors of domestic violence. During these years, we have deepened and broadened our engagement with women and children, and expanded on the vision of our founders.

We still help women who survive domestic violence and homelessness — and thanks to your generosity, we help their children, too. We serve an average of 64 families per night in our six family programs.

We still offer so much more than housing — and thanks to your generosity, we include therapeutic, developmental daycare as well as in-depth case management services to hundreds of people. Our family programs currently serve 96 children.

We still treat all survivors with dignity — and thanks to your generosity, we offer intensive, free therapy to all survivors of domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Support Center provided more than 2,100 hours of counseling in 2016.

With you, we serve as a helping hand to women in need; we are an offer of stability to children who have been relocated far too often in their young lives; and we are a sturdy bridge between trauma and triumph. When completing a program, 96 percent of families relocate to permanent, independent living.

It is our honor to enact your vision. It is a privilege to help women, children and families in greatest need and with very limited resources build safe, stable lives and achieve their highest potential.

None of this is possible without you. We thank you deeply for your generosity. You are why Hope Starts Here.

Sincerely,

Sandra Jackson Pamela Pinkett Executive Director Chair, Board of Directors

40 YEARS of SERVICE2016 marked House of Ruth’s 40th year! We thank the donors and partners who celebrated with us, and those who have sustained us along the way. Your investments in the women, children, and families at House of Ruth have changed the lives of more than 10,000 people in need. With you, we’re breaking the cycle of domestic violence, poverty, and homelessness.

From the beginning, we knew that women in crisis needed a lot more than an overnight stay and a bag of groceries. That belief still guides us every day. At 13 homes and programs, House of Ruth’s skilled and compassionate staff are here for women and children escaping violence, instability, and insecurity, and to help them build a new life of hope and independence.

This year, House of Ruth served more than 400 women and children. Our homes for women without children served 73 women, and our homes and programs for families helped 142 women and children. Kidspace provided 50 homeless infants and children with developmental and therapeutic day care — the only such facility in D.C.’s Ward 7. At our Domestic Violence Support Center, we provided 2,100 hours of expert counseling to people experiencing domestic violence.

BECAUSE of YOU...Because of you, 96% of families and 91% of single women who participate in our housing programs for at least one year are able to secure and sustain stable permanent housing after they leave House of Ruth.

In each of our more than 40 years, House of Ruth responded to the experiences of women and children seeking our help by improving — training our staff, adding new support groups for women and children and crafting more services to address employment, health, housing, self-esteem, and trauma.

And we are so excited for what’s ahead. We are planning big changes for Kidspace, to ensure the space where we provide care matches the quality of the services children receive. We have opportunities to build and engage in issues vital to our city’s vibrancy. We are deeply thankful to the community of caring and dedicated donors who support the women, children, and families we serve every day.

a life with flavor Rosemary (pictured on the right) survived a near-fatal domestic violence attack and lost custody of her two sons due to her drug addiction before coming to House

of Ruth’s FamilySpace program. While receiving supportive services to help her remain sober and stable, Rosemary set goals to build on her strengths: she always had a gift and passion for cooking. Here, Rosemary obtained a culinary certificate and earned her associates degree in culinary arts. Rosemary is a chef at the D.C. Superior Court building. Judges often request her to cater special events in their chambers because of her delicious food. Rosemary was surprised with a WJLA Good Morning, Washington makeover in May, 2017.

a new start Janice came to House of Ruth with her son after leaving a violent relationship and moving between hotels.

“House of Ruth did so much more than provide me with a safe place to stay. In the 18 months I worked with them, they gave me counseling to help with my own mental issues that I had going on at the time, got me grants for school, and helped me fix my credit. We are now in our own apartment, and so grateful to have been a part of this program.”

back on track Kira is one of the hundreds of women you helped in 2016. After arriving at House of Ruth’s Madison program, Kira secured not one, but two jobs, got her driver’s license, and

worked hard to build skills for lasting self-sufficiency.

“While I was checking in, I didn’t have a job, I didn’t know where I was supposed to start, and I was pretty much all over the place. The caseworkers were a big help to me, directing me to different programs and resources to find a job, workshops and women’s groups to attend. It was a big help to me to get where I am today. I’m so grateful for House of Ruth and its place in my life.”

40 Years and Counting... In October of 2016, philanthropists, leaders, domestic violence advocates, and dignitaries celebrated 40 years of House of Ruth. From the rooftop of Hogan Lovells, House of Ruth recognized our partners at The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, AFCEA Bethesda, and the D.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence for their leadership, service, and significant contributions to the community. We appreciate those who joined us, our generous Host Committee and Honorary Committee members, and Capitol Harmonia for entertaining us. Together, we’ll continue working for safe, stable homes and supportive, live-changing services for those in need.
