Currently, labour costs in Thailand are quite high. As a result, Thai part manufacturers need to manufacture products that can justify these costs with added value. They should also be prepared to manufacture more complex precision components. ASEAN neighbors such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar will initially become players in manufacturing simple parts that do not require precision quality. The need for quality machinery and automated systems will play a major role in improving productivity and increasing competitiveness. Entrepreneurs should also look to build and add value to other industrial areas such as Medical Devices and the Aerospace industry.

INTERMACH 2014Set to welcome over 40,000 quality buyers from 40 countries! This year INTERMACH will have had more than 30 years in helping build successful business for the Thai manufacturing industry. The 2014 event will be the largest and most comprehensive industrialmachinery and equipment display in the region, featuring top companies from over 35 countries. INTERMACH will again join forces with SUBCON Thailand, ASEAN’s largest subcontracting exhibition for procuring industrial parts and the perfect place for matching global suppliers with global manufacturers.

Khun Sanchai Noombunnam, Group Director, UBM Asia (Thailand) the show organiser, said “INTERMACH has received excellent feedback from its previous events, the kind of positive comments that give us confidence to continue organising the event and adding changes and developments clearly appreciated over the past three years.”

“Exhibition space at INTERMACH 2014 was fully booked by the end of 2013 and the show has shown substantial growth in line with market demand. The main strength comes from the event being an

UBM began organising SUBCON in cooperation with the BOI. In its first year there were over 100 booths representing part-making companies. Today the show has over 300 booths representing part-makers from 12 countries - especially from Thailand, the ASEAN region and Japan. In collaboration with the BOI and the Alliance for Supporting Industries Association the 2014 show will feature special extra events and Seminars that will introduce and inform entrepreneurs about the production of component parts required by upcoming industries in Thailand and ASEAN. This will include the latest needs in major areas such as medical devices, the commercial aircraft industry & aerospace.” Khun Sanchai added.

Mr. Ryoma Oshima :

“Our machines can be used in all industries from automotive, engines, aerospace, and agricultural vehicles. The current economy remains stable but we cannot look only at the automotive market alone, we need to consider other markets as well. Within 2-3 years, there will be changes on production of aerospace parts. Currently, production facilities are being developed in Singapore, Japan, the USA and Europe. Customers are expanding their production to Thailand and subcontracting aerospace parts here. We see Thailand manufacturing products that are more complex and high priced. Mass production will relocate to other countries.”

Mr. Masahide Yamamoto :

“I expect the ASEAN Economic Community will help expand, link and connect businesses more easily. Our business group is expecting to expand as well. At present, we are mainly taking care of Thailand, making Laser and Wire Cutting Machinery to support the production of Auto parts, Electronics and Air conditioning. We see opportunities to grow in these industries.”

“ASEAN countries including Thailand need to reform in order to be ready for the upcoming AEC in regard to Transportation, Energy Management Systems & Port Transportation. The trend of the industry will be to increase construction infrastructure which is likely to be very significant. Most of our customer base includes auto parts and mould makers. In the future, we are planning to market our products to the construction industry and companies of all sizes.”

Mr. Naoki Mori :

“It feels like the AEC has already begun. Currently the cost of living in Thailand is considerably high; therefore products manufactured here must be of higher value, with items that require accuracy and quality. Emerging industries include medical devices and the automotive industry. We need the government to support more in these areas because Thailand has the basic utilities and infrastructure.”

Mr. Kanji Nagata :

“Toyoda is expanding its market to ASEAN. Our Thai office will take care of all ASEAN operations. Our main customers are in the automotive sector. The countries that have a growing automotive industry are Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Our customers in Singapore are in aerospace parts and petroleum. Neighboring countries such as Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar are quite interesting but at present, it isn’t our main focus. This is because our machines are for complex and high precision products that require skills to operate and manufacture products.”

INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION IS THE SOLUTION FOR THAI INDUSTRYเครองจกรระบบอตโนมตตอบโจทยอตสาหกรรมไทย

Mr. Ryoma Oshima :

“An Automatic system approach is when you place a piece material on a product line or a machine then 2 hours later it has completed the job. If a laser cutter machine, then it should only require one person to operate. Currently Thailand is a manufacturing base, but it needs to shift to manufacturing products that are more complex. Simple parts can be manufactured by neighboring countries but the assembly should be done back here in Thailand.”

Mr. Masahide Yamamoto :

“Currently, our machines are operating in various industries. It's important to use good technology which makes the work faster and produces high precision products. The current issue is higher wages; therefore have to come up with machines that can run automatically without people. Another demand is that most users require high skills to operate. Machine makers need come up with technology that is easy to operate and able to produce good work at the same time.”

Mr. Shinobu Mitsui :

“Okuma started by inventing its own CNC machine. A benefit that we offer with our equipment is "Intelligent Technology". Manufacturing expensive parts requires complex and precision equipment and skilled personnel. But “Intelligent Technology” enables people without much experience to operate our machines. Thailand still has many industries that are labor intensive. However, the future trend is for less labor and more senior adults (same as Japan). This will result in higher wages. Technology will be more and more important.”

Mr. Naoki Mori :

“Machines from Sodick are focused on “electrical equipment”. If you think of Sodick then it reminds you of an Electric Machine. The company makes machines that meet customers' needs. New products use new technologies from Japan and in the beginning; we made machines that use oil. We used a “Linear Motor” for about 14-15 years, but are now developing, new technology that operates machines via “Smart Phone” application. This is one of the new technologies employing a Touch Screen.”

“At present, Thailand’s current GDP growth is low, but is likely to increase soon and production costs will increase. With higher production costs from upstream production, how can entrepreneurs manufacture products that are reliable and they can sell? We are developing this technology in industrial machinery that is easier to operate. An Automatic system can work with a piece of metal sheet then automatically produce a finished part immediately after.”

THAILAND REMAINS COMPETITIVE AS POWERFUL ASEAN AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING BASE

Despite Indonesian growth and added additional benefits to attract investors, Thailand continues to attract new automotive production plants. The country gives tax breaks of up to 30% for six years on vehicles that are environmentally friendly and a reduction of 40% for car tax overall. The Thailand Board of Investment also offers special tax privilege for raw materials depending on the investment area and grants tax privileges plus exemption for corporate income tax (CAP) for entrepreneurs for 8 years with no limit.

The country also reduces taxes by 50% for 5 years after the above tax breaks have passed. Along with a tax reduction of 17% for eco cars and another 30% for clean energy cars, Thailand remains the most attractive investment location in the region.

According to the Jakarta Post Mr. Jongkie D. Sugiarto, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Automotive (GAIKINDO) said “Indone-sia is not ready to replace Thailand as ASEAN’s leading manufacturer and exporter of vehicles at this time, although many large auto manufacturers have plans for product expansion in Indonesia.”

“Indonesia’s annual auto production is only about half of Thailand’s, said Mr. Sugiarto. This means there is a big gap in existing production.” he said

The latest data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation showed that between January and November of last year, Thailand produced 2.3 million units, while Indonesia produced only 1.1 million units in the same period.

Data from the Association of Indonesian Auto-motive Industries stated that 1.1 million units were manufactured in Indonesia, with just 170,907 units or 15% going for export. The Thailand Board of Investment or BOI, on the other hand reported that half of Thai auto exports or about 1.2 million units were exported in 2012 - that was 735,627 cars.

Car production in Indonesia is mainly multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) and environmental friendly, fuel efficient, Low Cost Green Cars (LCGC) which are suitable for the domestic market. There is a high demand for these vehicles. Thailand is mainly auto manufacturers sedans and high-performance cars (SUV) for the domestic market and abroad. Indonesia does not produce sedans or high performance SUVs because taxes on these cars are much higher than in Thailand. These cars fall into a luxury tax category - 30% of the selling price. But for MPV cars in Indonesia the tax ratio is just 10%.

However, domestic sales between Indonesia and Thailand are almost equal. Indonesian produc-tion of MPV cars is still the most important segment driving domestic sales throughout the country. Many car makers have started moving invest-ments to increase production in this segment.

Mr. Vivek Vaidya, Vice President of Automo-tive and Transportation, Frost and Sullivan, said “Indonesia has a stimulus plan to attract the production of small cars that are more fuel efficient. This stimulus package has helped to increase overall car sales in the country which rose by about 6.5% this year and which made total production of 1.31 million vehicles. Domestic car sales in Thailand are more unstable because of the current domestic political unrest there. Car sales in Indonesia will reach 1.23 million units while Thailand will remain the same as last year - 1.3 million units.”

Another reason why Indonesia will continue to follow Thailand is because of Indonesia’s infra-structure bottleneck. However the government is trying to help manufacturers by building more cargo space at the port in North Jakarta. According to Prof. Dr. Ruth Banomyong, Professor of Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Thammasat University, certain areas in Indonesia are being explored to help with a master plan to develop logistics and the domestic market by linking various islands.

The growing Indonesian population and widening revenue base will likely cause Indonesian car sales to increase in the years ahead.

THE THAI-GERMAN INSTITUTE –A FORCE FORPROGRESS

As one of the most important organizations in Thai industry with strong government support, the Thai-German Industry encourages the de-velopment of capability and competitiveness. As a high manufacturing center we are also helping create a network for industrial development and knowledge management. Another of our goals is linking industry associations and academic institutions in order to further research and technology, as well as personnel development. Khun Jirasak, director of the Thai-German Institute, will give interviews about the strategy of the Thai-German Institute in 2014, and how its goal is to help raise the level of entrepreneurship, especially in supporting industries.

“Because the Thai-German Institute is part of a network of the Ministry of Industry, each year we receive a budget for developments in 2 or 3

major categories i.e. Mould Groups, improvement of machinery, development of automatic systems, or general analysis and assessments for the private sector including SMEs. We also manage other major industries directly. Currently there are several projects that are in progress including…

1. Mould Industry – focus on design solutions to lower costs, reduce production processes and raise quality enhancement. So far we have covered automotive parts. This year we will direct our attention to precision moulding for the Elec-tronics and Medical device industry along with the Aircraft parts industry. All require optimum level molding technology.

2. Training technicians and engineers to operate automation systems and oversee the process for automotive assembly lines. This comes with the support of the private sector, especially from Japanese automotive companies. We are also focusing on the development of individuals with standard knowledge who can use the full process of the system.

3. Driving and development of CAD / CAM / CAE programs with emphasis on CAE.

4. CNC Retrofit Training technicians for CNC machines. This is supported by the Department of Industrial Promotion and the training will give special insight to the machine; not just show how to use it, but know what to do when it

malfunctions. This will include the ability to disas-semble and assemble the machine.

5. Welding–develop professional standards of employees. Coordinate with academic institutions that provide vocational qualification certificates for welders who have passed their training from basic to an advanced level.

In the education sector, the Thai-Germany Institute is linking private sector and academic institutions at two levels. Level 1: Vocational education or college. This will be a dual course which enables study and work at the same time. Level 2: Under-graduate degree with Pathumwan Institute of Technology. Open a degree program at the In-stitute and at King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok open a Master’s degree Program on Saturday & Sunday aiming at technicians and engineers who are able to study and hold a job at the same time. We also

offer over 100 standard courses and more than 40 courses in English to help small entrepreneurs prepare for the AEC. There are also courses for medium and large factories that will be taught as needed and contain important methods that will help to reduce the length of the course.”

On factory automation Khun Jirasak said, "Today automation is essential for the small entrepre-neur, as many parts require mass production, repeat production, stable cost and quality. 24 hour production also may involve working in hazardous areas, using heat, electricity, chemi-cals and so on. Automation is virtually essential here. Currently, when SMEs have finished build-ing a factory they will acquire automated systems immediately and start the production process straight away with an engineer to oversee the process.”

Khun Jirasak discussed upcoming events at Thai-German Institute:

“In early April, there will be several big events organised by the Unit for Industrial Linkage Development (BUILD) from Thailand Board of Investment and UBM Asia (Thailand) together with The Thai Subcontracting Promotions As-sociation, Alliance for Supporting Industries Association and the Institute of Thailand. These events will be included with a seminar on “SUB-

Khun Taveesak Srisuntisuk, Managing Director of Hexagon Metrology (Thailand) Ltd. gave us the opportunity to interview him on the co-operation that exists between the two companies.

“THAIMACH Sales & Service Ltd. started as an agency for Hexagon Metrology in Thailand some 13 years ago. Our main group of customers at Hexagon are in the automotive industry. Hexagon Metrology (Thailand) was established on Sep-tember 1, 2006. THAIMACH Sales and Service then changed from being an exclusive distributor to nonexclusive, but THAIMACH still carries the brand along with many others. I have person-ally worked with the management of Hexagon Metrology (Thailand) since 2007.” said Khun Taveesak.

Khun Taveesak commented on the management policy of his business; “I manage the company as a family style operation. I don’t feel that my staff is a personal duty, but I care for them as my own family. With this management style they work from the heart. For example, the service department or engineering department consists of seven people and soon there will be eight. No one has quit or resigned since the department

was formed. The staffs at THAIMACH have worked together since 2004. I would like all staff to be happy with their work but not operate with an attitude like, ‘When the cat’s away the mouse will play.’ I want them to be happy working while I am here and work responsibility when I am away.”

Khun Taveesak had the following comments about managing a business, “If you look and rank the top three industrial metrology applica-tions, Hexagon will rank third. When we look at the advantages and disadvantages of competi-tors we see that we have 13 years experience in distribution and service - the key to our suc-cess. When we started, our first advertisement noted that our service was available in many countries. We also emphasized our after-sales service. Hexagon is acknowledged for excellent after-sales service, because we compete by using a ‘Next Day Service’ policy. If a cus-tomer is facing a machinery breakdown, we will come immediately or at the latest by the next day regardless of whether you are a large or small business. We carry an excellent stock of parts and firmly consider that all customers are equally important.”

“I believe the automotive industry is still able to grow further, at least for another 5-10 years. We have taken note of the mistakes made by Detroit and Australia. I now believe no other countries can compete with ASEAN. The Thai Automotive

industry has a target of 3 million units. The cur-rent champion is the pickup truck followed by the eco car. The industry is looking for a 3rd product champion because it is impossible to tell whether the eco car will reach 3 million units. It seems that Vans are an emerging trend and in Thailand, we use them as a public transport. Most vans are imported. But if the government offers support I believe Toyota will jump at the opportunity and invest. In order to reach 3 million units the government must give us their full sup-port.”

Khun Taveesak continued, “Our main customer base is the automotive sector and our market share is 70% of total sales. With some models, the buying decision comes from headquarters abroad but we still provide after sales services. For instance, Toyota in Japan purchased Hexa-gon’s machines then distributed them to their factories around the world. We provide service for Toyota (Thailand) using a body measuring machine. We don’t only just rely on this service and are looking for new customers. Some ma-chines like the CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), are bought directly from us by manu-facturers here in Thailand. Toyota (Thailand) was one of our customers in this regard.”

Khun Taveesak gave us his view on competition among ASEAN countries, “Since 2010, Hexagon Metrology (Thailand) has been overseeing the Vietnam market but in 2014, we took full control

of the Vietnam operation and set up a repre-sentative office there. Hexagon Metrology (Thai-land) also used to oversee business operations in Indonesia and Australia.”

“We see countries in the AEC for where the automotive industry still has great potential in spite of instability with the political situation in Thailand.” “the Director said. “In the future, In-donesia will not be a serious competitor because of natural disasters and major traffic problems. Vietnam is not as strong as it was 3-4 years ago, except for production of the motor bike. This is because of domestic demand and usage. As for Myanmar, the country has trained em-ployees and is receiving support from interna-tional Governments in response to planning. If Thailand’s political stability remains in question, then Myanmar may be an alternative.”

“Sales of measurement equipment are important, but for us to retain customers and get them to return for more orders is not easy.” said Khun Taveesak. “That is why in Thailand one of our most important strategies is after- sales service which is a model for Hexagon offices in other countries. Companies may wonder why custom-ers in other countries do not use Hexagon, but they use Hexagon products here in Thailand - with repeat purchases.” the Managing Director concluded.

คณทวศกดกลาวถงนโยบายในการบรหารจดการองคกรไววา “ผมบรหารจดการแบบครอบครว สวนใหญจะรจกครอบครวพนกงาน คอ ผมจะคดวาผมไมไดดแลเขาตามหนาทแตผมดแลดวยใจ ผมจงจะไดใจกลบมา อยางแผนกบรการหรอวศวกรของผม

ม 7 คนและจะเพมเปน 8 คนเรวๆน ตอนนยงไมมคนไหนลาออกเลยตงแตอยกนมา อยางแผนกบรการหรอวศวกรของบรษทไทยแมคกอยกนมาตงแตป 2547 ผมอยากใหพนกงานทางานอยางมความสขไมใชแบบ ‘แมวไมอยหนราเรง’ แตอยากใหราเรงตอนผมอยดวย ถาผมไมอยกทางานตามความรบผดชอบไป”

Just 10 years after Thailand announced a new investment and incentive policy with the goal of positioning the nation as the region’s premier aviation hub, the country has become a full-service leader in the aerospace industry. Today aerospace contributes approximately $25.5 billion to the country’s economy - 9 percent of Thai GDP. The Kingdom not only serves major aerospace companies with parts, production and components manufacturing, but also provides

other functions such as maintenance, air transport services, ground-based infrastructure and supply chain activities covering related areas.

Leading aviation companies such as General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Michelin, Senior Plc, Triumph Group, Chromalloy, Ducommun Incorporated, Aeroworks, Eurocopter, Driessen and Minebea currently have operations in Thailand, and the sector will only continue to grow.

In 2003, Thailand did not have a single aircraft maintenance center, forcing companies to seek parts from abroad - an expensive and lengthy process. However, over the past decade, because of its strategic location and spacious facilities, the country has expanded aggressively and is now an important center for the maintenance and production of aircraft parts – a market in excess of $1 billion and growing annually. The civil aviation industry now supports 393,000 jobs directly and 1.8 million additional positions in the tourism and travel sectors.

Key to the nation's aviation growth was the manufacture, repair and conversion of aircraft -- including parts and onboard equipment-- as an activity of special importance and benefit to

the country. This official classification makes pro-jects in the industry eligible for exemption of import duties on machinery and also provides an eight-year corporate income tax exemption. Non-tax incentives include assistance with work permit documentation and authorization to bring in foreign workers and own land. Foreign businesses are also entitled to 100 percent ownership.

ASEAN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY TODAY In the 21st Century Thailand is relying on imported aerospace and defense products, including aircraft, parts, maintenance service, and airport/ground support equipment. The demand for aircraft and parts is growing steadily as a national enterprise. Current demand includes communication equipment, avionics, parts and servicing, safety and security equipment, pas-senger and baggage screening machines, ground support vehicles, and airport lighting systems. The outlook bodes well for aviation sub-sector growth in both commercial and defence areas. This will include aerospace maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) as well as parts and components used in communication avionics equipment and servicing.

Malaysia Airlines and low-cost airline like Air Asia are rapidly upgrading their fleets. The Royal Malaysian Air Force operates various types of combat aircraft as well as cargo, search and rescue, and small transport craft. In addition, the country’s oil sector has a large fleet of heli-copters and smaller craft that service oil fields and offshore platforms. Locally based airlines provide opportunities in the aircraft delivery supply chain, as well as aircraft maintenance and airport infrastructure. The expansion of Malaysia’s MRO capability will certainly increase demand.

Singapore’s aerospace industry is divided into two major segments: 90% of aerospace com-panies are involved in MRO services and 10% in manufacturing activities. With the increase in regional budget carriers, the demand for MRO

services will increase. Sales prospects for products and services for aircraft repair and overhaul is also increasing. This includes repair equipment for landing gear, propellers, engines and fuel systems, avionics and test equipment. Singapore has world-class aerospace design and manu-facturing OEMs and suppliers. Products designed and manufactured in Singapore include engine casings, engine gears, valves, seat actuators, electrical power systems and galley equipment. In addition, Singapore is well positioned to expand market share in business aviation, regional training and asset management.

As the Indonesian Air Force builds its fighter fleet, there are opportunities for manufacturers to sell a broad range of military aircraft, vehicles, communications systems, spare parts, and maintenance services. Indonesia’s aviation market is currently growing at 20% per year. Aircraft, replacement parts and service are valuable and significant markets, as well as airport construction and development, air traffic control, logistics services and ground support equipment. The dramatic growth seen in this sector has created demand for equipment and services across the whole aviation industry spectrum.

This is nearly double that of the United States and more than 100 million higher than the EU. The region’s GDP is more than $2.3 trillion - around one-quarter that of China. ASEAN saw GDP growth of about 6% last year, compared with negative growth in the EU and approximately 2% growth for the United States.

Rising per capita incomes in ASEAN countries are leading to a growing middle class which accounted for about 22% of the total ASEAN regional population in 2010 and is forecasted to increase to more than 62% by 2030. Growing prosperity means more healthcare spending, which is leading to strong growth in the region’s medical device market. Valued at more than $4.5 billion in 2013, ASEAN’s medical device market

is projected to reach $8 billion by 2017, led by Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, which currently account for approximately two-thirds of the ASEAN device market.

Indonesia - The Indonesian medical device market is worth almost $1 billion and is also growing at 15% annually. Almost 95% of the market’s total value comes from imports, with 90% of all 2013 device registrations belonging to foreign manufacturers.

Malaysia - The country’s total healthcare expenditure reached more than $12 billion in 2013 and is forecasted to climb to almost $17 billion by 2015.

The Philippines - The medical device market here is valued at more than $300 million and is growing 10% annually thanks to a strong private sector and rising healthcare spending. The market is almost entirely composed of imports, with locally-made devices accounting for less than 3%.

Singapore - Singapore’s healthcare expenditure reached nearly $13 billion in 2012, similar to total healthcare spending in much more populous countries such as Malaysia and Thailand. The country’s total medical device market was valued at $600 million in 2013.

Vietnam - The Vietnamese medical device market was worth $630 million in 2013 and is forecasted to grow about 17% annually through 2017.

Today, major medical equipment and device manufacturers include companies that purchase products and materials from the ASEAN region, especially from Thailand. For instance: 3M, Bausch & Lomb, Baxter, Boston Scientific, Carl Zeiss, Diethelm, GE Medical, Guidant, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Philips Roche Diagnostics, Siemens and Tyco. Thailand also imports many medical devices from Japan who is looking to set up production plants in the region. Thailand is one of their top interests because of lower costs and

shortened delivery times within the ASEAN market. Although developing a regional medical industry is still in the early stages it is likely to follow the investment of manufacturers in the automotive industry. Thai supporting industries and parts manfacturers will benefit in the long term.

Khun Narong Nimitmongkol, General Manager OEM/END USER Business, of SKF (Thailand) Ltd., was recently interviewed and had the following to say about his prestigious international company:

"SKF is a leading global manufacturer and supplier of ball and roller bearings. The Swedish company was established in 1907 and has continued to expand its business and production base. Today it has 140 manufacturing facilities in 28 countries. We have Sales Offices in 130 countries with more than 15,000 dealers around the world.” Khun Narong started.

“We started here with a dealer but soon found that the domestic market was expanding rapidly and demand for goods and services was very real. Technical advice was also in demand. The result was that the company decided to invest and set up SKF (Thailand). That was 27 years ago and today we distribute to over 90 dealers nationwide and also sell directly to manufacturers. Our main market in Thailand is ‘Bearings’.”

“Our customers in every industry trust SKF Bearing because our quality is vital for theirmachines. We also emphasise the importance of after-sales service, stock availability and speed of delivery. If a machine breaks down, the cost of stopping a production line is way more than the cost of bearings. Our main customers include SCG, PTT, CP, Tata Steel and other leading companies. We are planning to expand our business to include the Thai automotiveindustry because it is a huge and growing market.” Khun Narong continued.

The General Manager went on to say, “In addition to Bearings, SKF has a variety of other products – in fact a complete cycle. Khun Narong also mentioned that, “although the cost of quality bearings is not high, the quality of a company’s product cannot be down played. Reliability of production machinery cannot be dismissed. These are all key areas designed to maximize our customers manufac-turing reliability and capabilities.”

Regarding future industry trends Khun Narong said, "In the near future, because of the AEC, there will be re-engineering of many heavy industries. The major production will not just remain in Thai-land, but expand to neighboring countries such as Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia and Thailand will be a center for management. Overall, I believe Thailand will still grow, with a strong base in the private sector and high quality of workforce.”

สาหรบแนวโน มอตสาหกรรมในอนาคตคณณรงค ไดใหขอคดเหนวา “ในอนาคตอนใกลเมอ เอ อ ซ เกดขน คงจะมการปรบฐานการผลตของอตสาหกรรมหนก โดยคงกาลงการผลตภายในประเทศไว แตหนไปสรางโรงงานขยายกาลงการผลตในประเทศเพอนบาน เชน พมา ลาว กมพชา เวยดนาม และอนโดนเซย โดยยงคงมประเทศไทยเปนศนยกลางการบรหารและขยายการตลาด ซงโดยรวมยงมความเชอมนวาประเทศไทยจะเตบโตดวยพนฐานอนแขงแกรงของภาคเอกชนและคณภาพของบคลากร”


Thailand’s Welding Skills Competition launched at INTERMACH 2013 turned out to be highly successful. The competition was the result of collaboration between the Association of Teachers and Entrepreneurial Professional Welders, the Vocational Institute, the Department of Skill Development (DSD), Ministry of Labour, UBM Asia (Thailand) and R.P.S Supply Co., Ltd. The objective was to promote and enhance welding capabilities starting with the educational institution.

Khun Pornsak Pongsakornvanich, Managing Director of the R.P.S Supply Co., Ltd., shared his initial thoughts on the competition noting a shortage of labor, especially skilled labor. “The Vocational Institute and DSD did not have enough funds to provide training for students,” he said. “Also, steel and welding wire is costly as is gas, which makes overall training expensive, requiring a budget of more than 25,000 baht per person. Currently, students that attend colleges now only get the opportunity to practice on a few jobs. I took the initiative to talk to the Entrepreneurial Professional Welder regarding the National Welding Simulator competition for vocational students. We got subsidy for 11 welding simulator machines to use in the competition. Students were then able to practice their welding skills on the simulators. The competition was organised for the first time last year. This year it will be bigger and start at Nakhonsithammarat. The final round will be held in May at INTERMCH 2014.”

Khun Pornsak mentioned the history of his company - R.P.S Supply Co., Ltd. “I started the company in 1999 as a distributor of wire welding machines,” he said. “We started importing factory goods and got some experiences. We are now selling brands such as Hi Tronic and Huawei. Our main customers are companies in the construction industry, automotive parts, and dealers who resell our products to small individual stores. Currently, we are expanding our customer base to include government agencies and the large construction market.”

“We are now committed to quality products and invite customers to try our products without any obligation. If an item malfunctions, our customer will not be required to purchase. The products we offer are of high quality and have no need for maintenance. Because of this our new customers come to us by ‘word of mouth’, and are mostly recommended by others.” Khun Pornsak noted.

MYANMAR MARKET OVERVIEW

Myanmar's economy is on track to grow by 6.5% in Fiscal Year 2013 (ending 31 March ‘14) and is seen expanding by 6.8% in Fiscal Year 2014. Tourist arrivals rose by 36% in the first 2 months of Fiscal Year 2013 and the future con-tinues to look bright for the newly liberated country.

As of now Myanmar looks set to again be-come a manufacturing hotspot for outsourcing companies. The ongoing quest for low cost production has drawn manufacturers’ attention to the country which has been out of the sourcing network for nearly a decade. A swing to low cost labour is also refueling manufacturing poten-tial in Myanmar.

The transformation of the country provides an important business opportunity for Thailand. Myanmar is significant in terms of its geographical boundaries which connect to five countries.

Business opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs also cover China and India - the border country of Myanmar. India is expected to expand its trade relations and investments with Myanmar which should double by the year 2015. Business investment opportunities in Myanmar for Thai investors include natural gas, mining and other businesses such as hotels and tourism along with construction, automotive, machinery, animal food and operations related to developing the country's infrastructure.

MYANMAR MARKET OVERVIEW

Nissan is one of the Japanese automakers that plan to begin producing small cars and trucks in Myanmar via its Malaysian partner Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd. This is expected to begin as early as this year. Nissan Motor and Tan Chong will jointly produce several thousand small passenger cars and pickup trucks a year in the Southeast Asian country. In a bid to tap the market, automakers have begun moving in, with Japan's Suzuki announcing the restart of production there earlier in the year and Ford saying it would soon open a showroom.

Car ownership was only around 2.36 million vehicles as of last year in a country with a popu-lation of 63 million, showing just how much room the market has to grow.

A Tan Chong affiliate will likely construct an assembly plant that will finish cars using parts shipped from Nissan factories in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.

However, as with all opportunities and invest-ments, there are also challenges. Equipment suppliers and machinery are one of the most urgent needs. Most businesses and factories are still using dated machinery. So there are certainly demands in this area and currently there are no major equipment suppliers capable of establishing regional support, although this is set to change as more customers move into the market. Also, investment tax relief will help justify initial relocation costs along with upgrades.

นอกจากนนโยบายการยกเวนภาษการลงทนจากภาครฐบาลจะเปนอกปจจยทชวยนกลงทนตางชาตตดสนใจยายฐานการผลตมายงประเทศมากขน
