2 Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of Horizons, thenewsletter for UWIC supporters. You are receivingthis because you are part of a growing community ofindividuals that are making a difference to ensure thatfuture generations can share in all that UWIC standsfor.

There may be many reasons that you have decided togive something back. For many, like me, it is becauseof the friendships we forged, the education wereceived, potential we realised when we studied here.

Giving has never been more important. At a time when UWIC’s reputation isgrowing worldwide, as we expand and provide more opportunities, funding foreducation is under pressure like never before.

We simply cannot rely on government funding for all that we must do. Today, no UKuniversity can expect that kind of support. Moreover, as student fees rise, many ofthe talented young people whom we seek to recruit as students, will find it evermore difficult to come to university.

We are so grateful to all our alumni, friends, staff and the organisations that supportus. It is only through this support that we can continue our tradition of opportunity, achievement and innovation.

UWIC is celebrating the success of its first ever telephone fundraising campaign toraise money for the new UWIC Annual Fund.

Over 4 weeks in October and November 2010, current students called over 1,000UWIC alumni to re-connect and ask for their support. Over £30,000 was pledgedover 5 years! This is a marvellous testament to the generosity of our alumni and thisresponse gives us great confidence as we go forward.

The callers have enjoyed learning about the history of the University from alumni andthe campaign has given them the opportunity to talk with professionals alreadyworking in their chosen field of study. Many have received careers advice, tips andgeneral life lessons from former students. They also got to tell our former studentswhat it is like to be a student at the UWIC today. It has been a highly beneficial andenjoyable experience for both parties.

Sensory DesignWendy Keay-Bright is a Reader inInclusive Design at the Cardiff School ofArt and Design. Her research focuses onthe playfulness of children with severeAutistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) asthey interact expressively withtechnology. Wendy has already wonnumerous awards for her workdeveloping ReacTickles – an interactivecreativity tool for children with ASC. Now thanks to a £10,000 donation fromthe Rayne Foundation, she is able todevelop her work with a project involvingchildren at the Ashgrove School inPenarth. This project will lead to newtechnology applications, designed withthe children to help improve their self-confidence and creativity. Children withASC are often disenfranchised when itcomes to the co-creation and applicationof new technologies. This design processintends to be exemplar so the end-usersof such products are not excluded in thefuture. The resulting applications couldbe used in clinical, educational andrecreational contexts.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE...Honey is a complex substance made up of over 200 components and it has beenfound that it acts against pathogens via more than one mechanism. It is unusualfor an antimicrobial agent such as honey to have different modes of action ondifferent bacteria. This has led Professor Cooper and her team to determine theprecise target sites of manuka honey in an antibiotic-resistant strain ofStaphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a particularly difficult organism tomanage clinically. Preliminary data in this study revealed that manuka honeyinterrupts division and separation of cells that normally occurs when MRSA isincreasing in number. Professor Cooper’s work has been recognisedinternationally and it could lead to new treatments for patients with MRSA.Without their support, this work would not be able to go ahead. The project isbeing generously funded by the Waterloo Foundation and the Sir Halley StewartTrust.

5Fundraising News round-up

Library developmentsOver £5,000 has been donated in support of UWIC Libraries since we startedfundraising in January 2009. Having recently opened a brand new extension to theexisting building in Llandaff, this could not have come at a better time. Alongsidepurchasing high demand books and e-resources, UWIC libraries are delighted witha new piece of equipment they were able to purchase due to the kind support fromstaff and alumni.

The new desktop projector and the portable screen will be of great benefit tostudents by raising their awareness of resources that can support their learning andresearch, for example demonstrating new electronic databases. This will be donethrough displays or tailored training sessions.

We are really grateful to a number of staff and alumni who have committed to aregular monthly donation to UWIC Libraries. This will play a huge role in improvingresources for current students.

Fundraising News round-up

Wales Sports Centre forthe Disabled The Wales Sports Centre for the Disabled(WSCD) at the Cyncoed Campus owes itsexistence to the commitment and support ofparalympian John Harris and Chris HallamMBE. 17 years ago they completed a 400mile wheelchair push around the perimeterof Wales raising £250,000 which funded itscreation.

After many years of the facility being usedto its full potential, much of the equipmentneeds to be replaced. We beganfundraising in 2009 to purchase the mostheavily used items of equipment and over£13,000 has been raised! This has enabledthe purchase of a new Dual AdjustablePulley machine, a bicep curl machine, a legpress machine and a seated ellipticalmachine for cardiovascular workout.

“This new equipment is excellent and hasreally improved my workout overall. Findinga gym that is fully accessible as a wheelchairuser, with specialized equipment issurprisingly difficult, so the Wales SportsCentre for the Disabled at UWIC is reallyimportant to me. I’ve been coming heresince it opened!” Mark, WSCD user
