H O U S T O N

Come August, mostHoustonians have theirroutines down for dealing

with the summer heat. Manyhead for the water – be it beach, lake or pool – or retreat to vastair-conditioned spaces, such asmalls and movie theaters.

Our August issue featureshomes that embrace both ofthose stay-cool strategies.Galveston resident, architect andlighting designer Sarah Gandyphotographed and documentedthe incredible restoration journeyof an 1870s cottage, located lessthan a mile from Galveston’s sea-wall. Owners Clay Wade andPaul Mendoza spent more than adecade transforming the aban-doned wreck into a historicaltreasure.

For cosmopolitan types whoprefer be near the bright lights ofthe big city, our feature on high-rise living at Mosaic on HermannPark showcases various decorativeapproaches to the luxury towerlifestyle. The property was re-launched in early 2011 with asofter, more carefully considereddécor.

Holly Beretto’s article on sun-rooms and screened porchesoffers yet another way to out-smart the weather while still tak-

ing in the outdoors. Adding oneof these specialized rooms ontoyour home can increase your liv-able square footage and add anew level of landscape enjoymentto your life.

Additional articles this monthinclude Joetta Moulden’s jazzymakeover of a home office space, and our organization article spellsout great ways to transform yourmaster closet.

Happy home improving!

Chris Williamson found me on Angie’s List. In one year he moved toMidtown, started a new job and became debt free. He knew hewanted help with his small, third-floor walkup apartment and as acreative, gregarious sort, he wanted to bounce his ideas off of aprofessional.

“I know that I can’t be an expert at everything, so I really believe in gettingexpert help for important things,” Chris explained.

His home office was dark, poorly lit and not conducive to the creative Webdesign and development work he was doing in his workspace. “I need a lot oflight,” he told me. “I really notice it in the winter when the days are short andthe sun is to the north and low in the sky,” he added.

The room also lacked the warm colors Chris likes, so I knew adding light andcolor to the equation were crucial. He really wanted to add more energy andvitality to the room to help him focus and concentrate all day long. Since theworkspace is located off the kitchen, he also wanted guests to be able to sit in thespace and visit with him while he was cooking, so I suggested he buy anadjustable Turner barstool from Crate & Barrel, which could slide underneaththe desk when it was not needed.

We began with paint. As a renter, Chris did not want to spend a fortune onremodeling, and I have found that paint gives you the most bang for your buck. After Chris checked with his property manager and found out wall painting wasOK, I chose Benjamin Moore “Rich Cream” for the upper wall above the chairrail (same color as the living room so he could use leftover paint) and BenjaminMoore Golden Mist #2158-40 below the chair rail, which worked beautifullywith his style and artwork, as well as the nearby kitchen countertop tile. Thetrim remains the same bright white that it was.

TIP: For the best flow, evaluate your paint chips in each room ofyour home to make sure they work with art, fabrics and rugs, and “permanent” surfaces like granite or tile.

Since most people don’t address the floor, I suggested a more colorful rug toadd additional color and energy to the room. Chris said he liked FLOR carpetsquares, a good idea because a square could be easily replaced if need be. Heended up ordering directly from the website and using their design software, toexperiment with colors he liked for the office that also complimented the livingroom, which I stressed was quite important especially in a small space.

AFTER: Painting the wallswith cheerful colors, creat-ing a multi-colored area rugmade of FLOR squares, mov-ing a demi-lune table aroundthe corner into the officeand hanging custom art-work depicting logos associ-ated with the owner’scareer history made theoffice feel much more invit-ing and energizing.

BEFORE: A lack of color, lighting and wall decormade this utilitarian homeoffice a creative washout.

TRADE SECRETS• Paint consistently gives the mostbang for your buck.

Chris chose FLOR’s House Pet Collection, and after ordering samples, decidedon Frog, Hamster and Tabby Cat as the colors he wanted to use to form thecheckerboard pattern.

TIP: Don’t forget the impact of color on the floor to add pizzazzto a room.

A surface-mounted, 8-foot-long, inexpensive Ikea track light illuminated newartwork above the desk (I gave him specific sizes that would work and we dis-cussed meaningful images to use), the transom window (which I suggestedcleaning to allow maximum light into the office) and existing artwork on thewall behind his desk and added brightness to the room. Chris bought an officetask lamp online at Office Depot.com, which provided bright, glare free worklight to the desk area.

The last task was tweaking the art on the wall over his desktop. We agreed itwould be appropriate for his office to select three round logos from the threestages of his career history, and print them in bright white on canvases that werethe same red-brown background as the fingerprint image just outside his officedoor.

TIP: Select meaningful artwork for your home that reflects yourinterests, then light it so that it really is the focal point of theroom.

Chris used logos from CBS, the TV network of the stations where heworked, and two logos from his friend and employer (who also is a graphicartist) who designed them. “The three company logos represent my progressionfrom television to freelance e-mail and Web work to an interactive design firm,”Chris explained. He took the files and worked some magic of his own with a

free graphics application from www.inkscape.org to insure the circles and logosizes were uniform and then transferred the files electronically to Copy.com onWestheimer and had them come close to the red-brown background of the fin-gerprint canvas, which he took to them. They printed the canvases andstretched them over 20” x 20” square wood frames. “The high contrast withthe big white circles is striking, and the logos mean a lot to me and say some-thing about where I’ve come from. The process of creating this art was a reallycool collaboration of friends and it’s a constant reminder of some importantpeople in my life,” he explained.

At my suggestion, Chris moved an existing black demi-lune table fromaround the corner in his entryway to the larger blank wall by the doorway. Itholds keys and sunglasses to grab as he is leaving the apartment. “Before, Ialways moved that table there when I vacuumed and I would never havethought to leave it there,” he laughed, “but it works.”

Chris said that this project would have dragged on forever without usingsomeone he trusted to show photos of what he liked, bounce ideas off of andhelp him make decisions. “A friend dropped by the other day and summed itup with one word—‘wow’,” Chris said. “That really was music to my ears.”

Conquering the ClosetStorage s t rageg ies to s imp l i f y your l i f e and improve the way you look

When getting dressed in the morning requires a shovingmatch to wrestle your clothing free from the grips of yourclosest, it’s time for an intervention. The master closet holds a huge variety of items – shirts, pants, skirts, jackets, shoes, belts, purses, sweaters and more. Unfortunatelyfor many of us, the size of our closets doesn’t seem to match thatmultitude of wardrobe options.

“Every effort you make counts when it comes to reducing clut-ter,” says local expert Mimi Tanner, author of Declutter Fast. “It isan attainable goal, whether you take a fast or slow approach. Thepurpose of reducing clutter is to increase your peace of mind. Sowhen you find your clutter-reducing efforts themselves to be caus-ing you stress, take a step back. Focus on one small area at a time.Even five minutes a day can make a huge difference over time.”

CONQUERING THE CLOSET

GETTING STARTED

Step one is to weed out what doesn’t fit, is worn out or doesn’t lookas good as it once did. The gold standard is the two-year rule: if youhaven’t worn it two years, you won’t likely put it on again. Giveaway, donate or sell what you eliminate from your overstuffed closet.

To create more usable space, look up. You can take advantage ofvertical space by adding shelves for storing items used less often allthe way up to the ceiling. To access these items later, keep a foldingstep stool tucked inside the door. Another big space-maker is tomove out-of-season items to an under-bed storage box or other loca-tion. Be sure to utilize the back of the closet door to store shoes, belts, scarves and other accessories.

GETTING SERIOUS

If time allows, empty out the closet completely and determine if youcan add an extra clothing bar. Measure garments such as shirts orfolded pants that may only need about two feet of hanging space.Adding a second rod not only increases the capacity for hangingclothes, it improves visibility, so you will be able to find clothesquickly without a lengthy search.

With new bars, shelves and storage solutions in place separateyour clothing by long-hanging and short-hanging items. Arrange

items by color to make selecting outfits easier. Opt for clear bins and organizers, such as over-doorshoe bags. Label boxes and bins so their contents can easily be determined with a quick glance. Ifyou need to keep shoes in boxes, you can go one step beyond labeling by attaching a photo of theshoes to the end of the box so you can easily tell which pair of black shoes are in which box.

Each person has to create their own system that suits them to truly be a system that woks.“The person who wants to organize has to want to do it for themselves,” says Tammy Atchison, certified professional organizer and owner of The Busy Corner.

1. DE-CLUTTER YOUR CLOSET – move boxes and storage items tothe garage or attic. Get them out of the closet to make more spacefor your clothes and accessories to get ready in the morning.

SUNROOMS AND SCREENEDPORCHES CAN HELP YOU ENJOYYOUR YARD IN COMFORT

Bring the Outdoors InAs Houston’s steamy summer slides on, you might find yourself looking

out the windows of your air conditioned house or office, thinking, “It’s such apretty day. I’d love to be outside, but it’s so hot.”

One of the great things about living in the Bayou City is that we haveclose to 300 days of sunshine every year. But even the hardiest Houston sup-porter will admit, August and September might best be enjoyed inside.Hanging out housebound doesn’t mean you have to give up on your love ofthe outdoors, however.

The solution to experiencing Houston’s glorious sunny summers withoutthe sticky heat: the sunroom. Whether you’re looking to build a sunroom orscreen room or renovate the one you have, a sunroom is the perfect way tobring the outdoors in.

“Sunrooms and screen rooms are two different things,” says Ed Gosline, ofSun Fun Enclosures, a Stafford company that’s been in business since 1982.Specializing in patio, pool and porch enclosures, Gosline and his team havehelped clients find all sorts of innovative ways to enjoy the sun. He explainsthat screen rooms are built around a frame that is designed for natural ventila-tion, provided by the screens. Sunrooms are usually permanent structures, withdouble-pane glass, and are often built right onto a house.

How do you know whichone might be right for yourhome? Gosline says talking withyour sunroom builder is theimportant first step.

“We’ll come out and look ata homeowner’s existing propertyand foundation and try to figureout which structure will workbest within the space,” he says.“It might be that we can buildsomething onto the side of thehome, or a better option couldbe a screen room or patio in thebackyard.”

Builders say it’s important toconsider what you’re going to useyour sunroom for, as you decidewhat renovations are required orthe kind of structure you need. Ifyou’re using it as a place to gatherwith friends and kick back with aglass of wine, or a place whereyour pets can get some fresh airwithout being outside for longhours, a screened-in enclosurewith a small air conditioningunit may well do the trick. However, if you want a roomthat doubles as living space, sayan office with a view, you’re look-ing at an addition to your home.

“One of our clients is awriter,” says Ali Zare, whoseAffordable Sunrooms has beenbuilding sun structures for thelast 23 years. “And her sunroomhas great walls of double-panedglass and a waterfall outside. Sheuses it for her office.”

Zare says that a permanentstructure like the writer’s sun-room gives you the opportunityto use your sunroom throughoutthe year. The double-paned glassprovides insulation, and the cen-tral air conditioning keeps itcool. Sometimes, he says, he’llencounter situations where ahome had a sunroom with a

glass roof, and his company’sbeen called in to replace it. Hesays people want the light andthe beauty the sunroom pro-vides, but not necessarily theintense heat from a fully glassedroof. In this case, he recom-mends you consider a skylight,or simply enlarging the win-dows that serve as the walls ofthe room.

“People love their sun-rooms,” he says. “We’re noticinga lot of renovations happening, where people want to replacethe single-paned glass they havewith something with more insu-lation.”

Gosline agrees that clientsare looking for ways to enhancetheir indoor living with ele-ments of the outdoors. Henotes that often clients come inthinking they want a full sun-room, but will wind up with ascreen room instead.

“These are great structuresfor your pets to enjoy, or maybeyou or your guests are smokers,”he says. “We’re building a lot ofthese right now.”

No matter which type ofroom you’re thinking about, both Gosline and Zare agreethat construction is but oneconsideration to think over.

“Landscaping is important,”says Zare. “If you have this sun-room, you want to have some-thing beautiful to look at out-side.” He’ll work with his clientsto help them find landscapearchitects who can bring thatperfect finishing touch to aproject.

Gosline also notes thatyou’ll want to talk to a decora-tor to make sure you’ve got theright furniture and fabrics foryour space. He readily admitsthat this isn’t an area of expertisefor his company, but he knows

Designers deck out luxury apartments tocreate four distinctslices of highrise living

Above &Beyond By SANDRA COOK

The vast majority of Houston-area residents take great pride in owninga Texas-size house on a Texas size lawn. But that level of upkeep isn’t foreverybody. For those who’d rather not deal with lawn maintenance, mosquito management, neighborhood politics, our big-city status offersa multitude of highrise living options that are convenient to businessdistricts, cultural centers and major parks – for nature appreciation asneeded.

One such property is Mosaic on Hermann Park, re-launched inFebruary 2011 after ST Residential (the company behind StarwoodCapitol, W Hotels, etc.) purchased and reinvented the two-tower, 29-story, 790-unit highrise. Seeking to crank up the appeal for both renters

and buyers, ST Residential infused every inch of the property withupgrades and design touches that exude unstuffy luxury.

Led by Kemper Hyers, head of design for Starwood Capital, thedesign team completely reworked the interiors throughout, includinglobby areas, the social lounge – even the elevator cabs. Local designerSarah Pellegrin, RID, IIDA at Gensler oversaw the efforts first-hand.

To help prospective residents see themselves living there, the compa-ny created four distinct model homes in different floor plans on theproperty. The model units were designed to suit the lifestyles of varioustypes of singles and couples, and thus named for the imagined personal-ities for which they are designed. The line up includes Jessica, a young

Designer Sarah Pellegrin and her team worked to frame the panoramic views from the entry of each unit. In high-rise buildings the view is often the most importantart element of a room, so furniture was selected and placed carefully to maximize views.

Page 57: Houston House & Home Magazine August 2011 Issue

Color palettes, furniture, accessories, artwork and personal items were included to differentiate each personality for each of the model homes. For example, the Judeand Andrew unit utilizes an eclectic, edgy array of accessories along with furniture from different time periods to resemble an authentic collection.

The club room, adjacent to the pool, offers tons of space for gatherings, but the chic library aesthetic also makes an appealing option for moments spacious solitude.

attorney, Jerome, an NFL rookie, Joshua a pediatric surgeon and Judeand Andrew, a neurologist/geologist couple, who own a dog.

Each of the units was furnished and accessorized as if these personali-ties were actual clients. Pellergin and the design team developed anddelivered the decorative preferences for each mock client down to thefinest of details.

Two Men and a Dog“Jude and Andrew are creative souls who love travel, music, art, enter-taining, and outdoor pursuits with their dog,” says Pellegrin. “Weenvisioned an eclectic space using neutral fabrics and finishes lettingthe artwork, furniture, accessories and paint add splashes of color andhints to their personalities and interests.”

“Little touches that give life and texture to a space were featured –a vintage camera, destination photography, maps, books, antique fur-niture pieces, dog accessories, a vinyl record collection, a guitar, aneasel TV stand and paint brushes—our goal was to make the spacelook like it had evolved over time,” Pellegrin continues. “We also cre-

ated flexible dining and serving space that encouraged informal andformal dining and entertaining.”

Doctors Quarters The Joshua unit was created to fit the lifestyle of a pediatric reconstruc-tive plastic surgeon with a hectic schedule. “His color palette is dark neu-trals that are sophisticated, dramatic and masculine,” says Pellegrin. “Heis a guy who works long hours. Like most young doctors, he is sleepdeprived. So, we created a bedroom with subdued hues that allow him tosleep during the day when his time allows.”

Legal EaseJessica is described as a young lawyer and foodie who loves cooking/bak-ing and entertaining when her busy work schedule allow. Pellegrin andher team selected unique serving pieces and dishes, a buffet piece, cook-ing equipment, and cookbooks to display in the Jessica unit.

“She loves interiors that have a traditional sensibility with a moderntwist—nothing like her Mom’s suburban décor,” says Pellegrin of the

The themes employed by the design team for the Jessica unit are light, fresh and feminine. Pellegrin says the space reflects an owner with traditional roots, but amodern approach to comfort and style. The display of dishware on the wall and the antique armoire indicate a fondness for old-fashioned things, while the contem-porary pieces, such as the mirrored cubes and lacquered floor lamp, are distinctly modern.

The living room for the Jerome unit was envisioned as a well-done bachelor pad. Each apartment began with the modern, industrial vibe of the entire property, which features exposed concrete ceilings and columns and wood floors. Fabric, furniture and accessories soften the hard edges and lend a distinctive, personalquality. A mixture of upholstered, metal, wood and glass furniture throughout the units add texture and verve.

would be Jessica’s tastes. “She is a big fan of Barbara Barry furniture, sowe included one of her signature chairs at the desk. We introducedtextiles, furniture and accent pieces—the antique armoire, profile pil-low, graphic print chandelier shade, Arte wallcovering behind the bed, antique fur stepstool at bedside, lacquered profile floor lamp and glasscube tables—that give the space a young, fresh sensibility.”

Strength in Neutrals NFL newcomer Jerome is described as a young guy who is into hisfootball career, music, sports, and romance. “His space is envisioned asa modern, rich, warm bachelor pad,” says Pellegrin. “He likes to stayfit and keep up with his favorite teams so athletic clothing, shoes, videos, magazines, and a tribute wall to his favorite players are all partof his space.” She explains that he loves his sound system, so a media

storage piece was included to hold his videos, CDs and magazines.“The color palette for his apartment is a combination of black,

grey, red and neutrals—rich, warm and masculine. Abstract art, LEMPiston Bar stools, molded resin coffee table and the low bed add amodern flare,” says Pellegrin.

Softening hard Edges The design team sought to soften and warm up each apartment, yetstill reflect a modern sensibility. “The modern, industrial vibe of theunits is expressed in the exposed ceilings and columns and woodfloors,” says Pellegrin. “The fabric, furniture and accessories wereselected to soften the hard edges and give each space a distinctive, per-sonal quality. A mixture of upholstered, metal, wood and glass furni-ture throughout the units add texture and verve.”

Girly, yet grown up details give the Jessica bedroom a soft and sophisticated flair. The chandelier print light fixture, the cool color of the artwork and draperiesand the layered neutrals on the bed convey a feminine look without being fussy.

The Jude and Andrew bedroom reflects an arty, eclectic feel that is still simple and not overdone. The vintage/industrial pendant light, the easel TV stand, the all-white, yet texture-rich lamps and the artwork provide interesting details that can exist in harmony.

Rescue RangersGalveston homeowners honor the past as they

save an abandoned homesteadSTORY & PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH GANDY

Something caught the eye of Houston residents Clay Wade andPaul Mendoza as they passed the decrepit, abandoned homeat 3702 Avenue M eleven years ago. There was no ‘For Sale’sign in the yard and they had never seen it on any realtor’s

listing, though the couple had been searching for a Galveston remod-el project for several years. Still, the house was clearly empty so theytook their chances climbing up on the rickety front porch to lookinside.

“There were over 80 broken panes of glass in the house when webought it,” remembers Clay, now the Events Coordinator forGalveston Historical Foundation. “The first time we saw it we literal-ly walked right in through the front window.”

The house had been vacant for five years, with their exception ofsome squatters and hundreds of pigeons which had made it theirroost. Most of the original trim had been stolen over time and anaddition on the back was in serious need of a wrecking ball—yetClay and Paul could see the home’s potential. “It had really goodbones and a good foundation,” says Clay. “Plus the high-raised cot-tage style and simple lines really appealed to us. It wasn’t highVictorian—it was more our style.”

As luck would have it Clay and Paul stumbled upon an old ‘ForSale’ sign that had been tossed on the front porch and were able totrack down the owner through the listed phone number. And therest, as they say, is history.

ABOVE: Clay Wade and Paul Mendoza were able to salvage 1,200 bricks from the old piers they discovered in their back yard. Those bricks now make up the front walk, back patio, backyardpond and the new foundation piers on the addition. OPPOSITE: Local architectural salvage shops helped keep the look of the construction consistent with the original house. The windowscame from Galveston Historical Foundation’s Salvage Warehouse.

69

A LOOK INTO THE PASTThe first step in the six-year renovation was to take the house backto its proverbial bare bones. “That was probably my favorite part,”says Clay, “getting everything cleared out so that you can really seewhat you’re working with.” In addition to the aforementionedpigeons, there were numerous manmade messes to undo: a closet hadbeen put in, blocking the large center hall, transoms over all thedoors had been covered, pocket doors had been hidden behind wallswith trim work, and layers of plywood and linoleum covered almostall of the hardwood floors.

The good news was that under those layers the original materialsalmost always remained and were salvageable. Where trim work, stairrails, etc. had gone missing over the years, Clay and Paul commis-sioned The Wood Factory out of Navasota to mill matching pieces, maintaining the historic integrity of the home.

The front porch and back addition were in such poor repair thatthey both needed to be replaced, so Clay and Paul hired island archi-tect David Watson to design a new addition for them which wouldincorporate a kitchen downstairs and a master bath and dressing areaupstairs.

As the new owners began to peel back the physical layers of thehouse to find the original structure, they also began to learn its histo-ry. Walter Ansell, who made his fortune shipping ice from New

England, built the home in 1871 in the rural area of Galveston (nowa mid-island neighborhood) and likely owned much of the surround-ing property. In 1916, a substantial back wing of the house wasmoved to an adjacent lot in order to create a separate dwelling. Itwas then replaced by a new addition on the back of the originalhouse. At some point a third house was built to the rear, with theintention of housing the family’s grandmother.

All three buildings, once part of the family compound, are nowseparately owned, but this knowledge of the home’s history gave Clayand Paul some inspiration. Taking the dimensions of the neighboringhouse (once the back wing of theirs), they paced off the footprint intheir back yard. Not surprisingly, the brick piers of the old founda-tion were still in place underground.

“We were able to salvage 1,200 bricks from those piers,” says Clay.“We reused them to create our front walk, back patio, backyardpond, and even to clad the new foundation piers on our addition sothat they match the originals.”

WASTE NOTThe buried bricks weren’t the only original pieces that got reworkedinto the revitalized home. As Clay and Paul planned a new additionto replace the one that had to be demolished, they looked for waysto integrate it into the main house, but finding wood floors that

The place settings are all family heirlooms, and theframed pieces beside the sideboard are dated 1775 with a note that they are embroidered pieces from a wedding gown. OPPOSITE: The kitchen pendants were salvaged out of Galveston’s oldpost office and were bought from Antiques Warehouse. The island counter, topped with Vesuvius granite from Colors of the Rainbow, survived the post-Ike ceiling collapse, but the travertine coun-ters on the sides were smashed (and later replaced with Caesarstone). The floors, made from the old front porch ceiling that had to be demolished, match the original hardwoods beautifully.

Clay is a sixth generation Galvestonian. The carved sofa in the living room was made by Clay’s ancestor, Traugott Schlueter, who was the first in his lineage to come to Galveston in 1841. He was a furniture and cabinet builder in the mid 1800s.

could match the existing proved to be a tough task. Fortuitouslythey noticed the width of the front porch ceiling boards matchedthe floor boards. Though the porch had to be entirely rebuilt due toextensive rot, two-thirds of the ceiling was salvageable and found anew home as the kitchen floor, making for a seamless transitionbetween old and new.

Though the former addition had seen its better days, it too wasable to contribute to the renovation before demolition. Beadboardwas salvaged from the walls and was used for wainscoting in theguest bath as well as for a custom vanity in the master bath.

In another step that was both earth-friendly and a nod to the his-

torical nature of the house, Clay and Paul decided to keep the origi-nal underground brick cistern that they discovered while digging inthe back yard. While that may sound like a simple decision, it infact wasn’t, as the plans for their new addition had one of the foun-dation pilings sitting square atop the antique manhole. Their archi-tect suggested they simply fill in the cistern, which he said is a com-mon thing to do on the island, but the homeowners didn’t have theheart to do that. Instead they had it plumbed so that it couldreceive and hold rainwater in the future and had the architect designa new curved piling which beautifully allows the cistern and addi-tion to co-exist.

ABOVE: The beadboard on the walls of the guest bath and on front of master vanity was salvaged from the home’s old kitchen addition before it was demolished. OPPOSITE: A tatteredTexas flag hangs in the second living room, or Flag Room. The flag is signed in the corner by Mollie Macgill Rosenberg, second wife of Henry Rosenberg. She founded the Galveston VeuveJefferson Davis Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, of which Clay’s mother was also a member. Clay found it in his mother’s attic after her death. The coffee table is made from the top of Clay’s ancestor’s inlaid wood tool chest.

Page 74: Houston House & Home Magazine August 2011 Issue

house& home | August 2011 | house and home on l ine . com74

The new master bath features a double vanity, generous shower and claw-foot tub. The bath also connects to a well-organized dressing area. The matching antique medicine cabinets came from Discovery Antiques in Gonzales, Texas.

The staircase was enclosed when Clay and Paul bought it and they don’t believe the upstairs had ever been used as anything more than storage. The bottom newel post of the stairs still existedbehind the walls and they had a matching one milled for upstairs. The portraits in the upstairs hall are all of Clay’s ancestors, many of whom lived in Galveston.

Page 75: Houston House & Home Magazine August 2011 Issue

75

Now, over a decade after they beganthis daunting mission, Clay and Paulare ready to move on to a new islandprospect, and decided to list their homefor sale shortly after it was on this year’sGalveston Historical Home’s Tour.Looking back, Clay remembers withsome humor, “I would say a project likethis takes patience and money—I’m notsure in which order,” says Clay. “This isthe third property we’d redone so wewere prepared, and yet maybe not quiteas prepared as we thought. We handledit in phases and took our time. Friendsthought we were crazy.”

“We always knew we’d retire toGalveston at some point,” he say. “Thishouse was just supposed to be a proj-ect…but it grew into a whole new life.”

Clay and Paul hired island architect David Watson to design a new addition for them to which incorporates the kitchen and the upstairs master bath and dressing area upstairs. They made an effort toretain the simplicity of the former attic space upstairs when they built out the master and guest suites, choosing painted wood walls over drywall to achieve a cottage look.

The kitchen, master dressing & bath are all part of the new addition, whichreplaced the part that had to be torn off the back. The front porch is also all-new construction, but they were able to replicate it through pictures, incor-porating six railing spindles that were left on the house when they bought it(they believe most had been looted). The Wood Factory in Navasota millednew ones to match, along with other millwork throughout the house.

Imay be considered to be a mature labmix lady by my feline and puppycompanions here at Houston SPCA,but I know something younger ladiesand lads can never learn until they’veexperienced a life full of ups and

downs. That is how to love honestly and to be completely loyal, even in badtimes. You see, after almost 10 years of a joyful life, my previous owner fellill and decided I would be best served by returning to the Houston SPCA.Sure, younger mutts have their quirky behavior, incessant playfulness andpuppy breath. But I’ve got patience and adhere to time-honored traditionssuch as respect for others and the ability to always be a kind, open-heartedcompanion. I am a sweet-as-pie, proper Southern lady with a heart of goldand an appreciation for the simple things in life. Like my namesake, LadyBird Johnson, I love the outdoors, especially gardens. As Mrs. Johnsonfamously said, “where flowers bloom so does hope.” My hope is that I’ll finda lovely new owner and home where we can take long walks and smell theroses together.
