INCREDIBLE LINEUP OF

LIVE MUSIC

CAAMPStarted by boyhood friends Evan Westfall and Taylor Meier, CAAMP came to life in Athens, Ohio. Taylor began penning and playing original songs at coffee shops around Athens in 2013. Evan moved down a couple of years later and together in a hazy attic, enjoying light beers, they would find the heartfelt sound that became CAAMP. Since independently releasing their self-titled first record in 2016, they have climbed Spotify charts, headlined the US, purchased denim jackets and added a bass-playing buddy: Matt Vinson, who also enjoys light beers and denim. With the upcoming release of their third album “By and By,” the Ohioan trio has high hopes and no reservations.

19

The MotetColorado’sThe Motet is a large funk-, jazz-, and Afrobeat-influenced ensemble led by drummer Dave Watts. The group emerged in the late ‘90s and built a loyal following with their high-energy live shows and cross-pollinated sound.

Page 20: HOW 2 HOOPLA

20

RipeRipe is seven musical soulmates who refuse to believe in a single definition of dance music. They are an unstoppable groove, an extended moment of ecstatic release, the catalyst for taking “just another night” and elevating it into something else entirely. They are the swagger of funk filtered through a rock anthem, a musical journey that somehow gets as stuck in your head as your favorite pop banger. They are the anchors of a rapidly growing community, a series of new friends becoming good friends becoming part of the extended family as their sound spreads and their world deepens. They are here to look at joy with the same depth as most people look at sadness, to find a happiness that is heavier and more meaningful than simply a distraction from the negative. Born all over, formed in Boston, Ripe is ready to bring the whole world to its feet.

MORE MUSICOnaThis band shares its name with a small

town just outside of its home base of Huntington, West Virginia. All five band members of Ona were raised in the area, with a couple of guys knowing each other since grade school. By tapping into their own social circles, the current line-up took hold in 2016: Brad Goodall (keys), Bradley Jenkins (vocals/guitar), Zach Johnston (bass), Max Nolte (drums), and Zack Owens (guitar). The band agreed on their name after Jenkins happened to wear an Ona Little League ball cap to rehearsal.

Larry Keel ExplosionLarry Keel is described by music critics and reviewers as the

most powerful, innovative, and all-out exhilarating acoustic flatpicking guitarist performing today. Keel has absorbed the best lessons from his bluegrass family upbringing, both sides deeply steeped in the rich mountain music culture and heritage of Southwest Virginia. From there, he has always integrated that solid musical grounding and natural-born talent with his own incomparable approach to playing amplified, acoustic guitar and composing original music. His fierce, high-spirited energy also appeals to young rockers, jammers and alt-country pickers and fans who are equally drawn to Keel’s blazing guitar power, the deep rumbling voice, his earthy and expansive song-writing, and his down-home-gritty-good-time charm.

MORE MUSICRobert Walter’s 20th CongressRobert Walter is an

accomplished keyboardist

and composer who plays a Hammond B3 organ and a Fender Rhodes piano. While touring extensively in the US and Europe, Walter has worked as a leader and sideman with many of the giants of American jazz and funk music. As a member of the classic band the Greyboy Allstars, Walter has built a large and devoted following. Walter also works as a session musician, recording and collaborating with a diverse group of artists.

Aaron Lee TasjanMost people know Aaron Lee Tasjan as one of the wittiest, most offbeat, brilliant, weed-smokin’ & LSD microdosin’ Americana troubadours writing and singing songs today. And the New York Times, NPR and Rolling Stone will all gladly corroborate. But steel yourselves, folk fans, because he’s about to follow his restless muse straight out from under the weight of everyone’s expectations into the kind of glammy, jingle-jangle power-pop- and- psych-tinged sounds he hasn’t dabbled in since his younger days playing lead guitar for a late-period incarnation of The New York Dolls.

Page 23: HOW 2 HOOPLA

23

The FritzThe Fritz is a soul-driven dance rock band hailing from Asheville, NC.The group’s aggressive approach to funk, soul, and rock creates a sound that is uniquely their own. Their high-energy, danceable songs provide a platform for each member to shine. With powerful vocals, climactic solos, and tight grooves, The Fritz has built a devoted following and is captivating audiences everywhere.

Arlo McKinley & the Lonesome SoundArlo McKinley has been busy

building a name for himself as an honest singer-songwriter that deserves to be heard ever since his self titled release in 2014 with his backing band The Lonesome Sound. Crossing genres of folk, rock, indie, and soul music, the mission of writing truthful and honest songs always remains the same. Being billed alongside musicians such as John Moreland, Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Justin Townes Earl and many others has helped Arlo McKinley get his name outside of the local Cincinnati scene and has gained him fans across the states and across the pond.

Page 24: HOW 2 HOOPLA

24

The WooksCapturing a moment, and a place — its past, people, and terrain within a song, The Wooks harness the rich musical and storytelling traditions of Kentucky into a new, old sound that embraces both string-music heritage and rock ‘n roll, jam, and singer-songwriter influences. Since 2014, the band, CJ Cain (lead guitar, vocals), Harry Clark (mandolin, vocals), Roddy Puckett (bass, vocals), George Guthrie (banjo), have delivered a raw, boot stomping, sing-along to every song, good-time bluegrass show, “...with improv-savvy interplay that endears the band to jam music fans and bluegrass traditionalists alike,” according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

INDECISIONINDECISION is from Charlottesville, Virginia.

Since the band’s official beginning in 1984, the good times they’ve had in pursuit of their musical vision could not have been possible without the support of our family, friends and fans.

From appearances at Bonnaroo (TN), MidX Festival (WV) and Down on the Farm (FLA), to sharing the stage with many great artists including The Neville Brothers, Phish, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, Hootie and the Blowfish, Jorma Kaukonen, Go Ahead (w/ members of Santana & Grateful Dead), Danny Gatton, The Wailers, Zero and many more, INDECISION continues to spread the word. Having recently celebrated their 20th anniversary with a new album The Great Road (produced by David Lowery of Cracker), INDECISION continues to tour year after year.

John R Miller & The Engine LightsJohn R. Miller began playing and writing music while growing up in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, an area along the Potomac River where the mountains meet Interstate 81. A co-founding member and songwriter for The Fox Hunt and Prison Book Club, he has since performed his songs across the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Japan, and Europe. He has made several appearances on NPR’s Mountain Stage with Larry Groce, has been a featured songwriter and performer on the Travelin’ Appalachians Revue, and his song “Coming Down” was performed by Kentucky artist Tyler Childers on his album Live at Red Barn I & II. With his band the Engine Lights, the music widens into a unique cross-section of folk, country blues, and rock n roll, featuring driving fiddle, close harmonies, wily guitar picking, and a deep-pocket rhythm section. Their most recent full-length effort, The Trouble You Follow, was released in 2018 via Lexington, KY’s Emperor Records.

The Judy ChopsFor the past decade The Judy Chops have been wowing audiences with their deft musicianship and high-energy live shows. This seven piece band comprised of family and friends has evolved from a Shenandoah Valley favorite into one of the hottest acts in the Virginia music scene. Their unique take on Americana is a fusion of modern and vintage musical styles, blending elements of swing, blues, rock, and soul for a sonic experience Huffington Post calls genre-defying!

Page 26: HOW 2 HOOPLA

26

The Rad TradsThe gentlemen comprising the

Brooklyn-based, five-piece band The Rad Trads distinguish themselves in ways few bands can. Already drawing lines around the block at home, the globe-trotting group’s singular take on rock n’ roll mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and jazz precision, all with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. It’s a sound and show that is gaining steam world over as The Rad Trads continue to tour in support of On Tap, out now from Hornblow Recordings.

Dharma BombsDharma Bombs has been a band since 2013 in some capacity or

another, going through 20 band members and performing countless shows all across the East Coast. The current lineup of Dharma Bombs represents the transition from being a band to being a family. The lyrical content of newly released, “Enjoy the View”, reflects this. From sneaking out of your mama’s house, remembering your great-grandmother’s Harley rides across the Blue Ridge Parkway, retracing your great-great-great-great-grandparents pilgrimage across the state of Virginia to a town that doesn’t exist anymore, this album is about family, love, and enjoying the continuously changing scenery we know as life. With band members living across the great state of Virginia, it is too simple to say that Dharma Bombs is from Richmond. From our start busking in the Richmond city streets to Roanoke’s mountains to Norfolk’s ports to Harrisonburg’s valleys, the band touches every corner and landscape of the Commonwealth.

Jon Stickley Trio:Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying

and cinematic instrumental trio, whose deep grooves, innovative flatpicking, and sultry-spacy violin moves the listener’s head, heart, and feet. “It’s not your father’s acoustic-guitar music—although Stickley’s pop showed him his first chords when he was 12 years old. Instead, Stickley’s Martin churns out a mixture of bluegrass, Chuck Berry, metal, prog, grunge, and assorted other genres—all thoroughly integrated into a personal style,” wrote Guitar Player Magazine.
