After completionof medical school prospective nephrologists must complete residency training in internalmedicine and pass the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination

before they can pursue nephrology training. After successful passing of the examinationthey must be accepted into a nephrology fellowship program. Nephrology fellowshipprograms must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate MedicalEducation and typically take 2 to 3 years to complete. All states require nephrologists tobe licensed to practice. Licensing requirements include completion of medical school andresidency and fellowship training and passing a written examination. Nephrologists muststay up to date on current advancements in the field and often complete continuingeducation throughout their careers.

What are the prospects for a career as a nephrologist?

Employment of all doctors is expected to grow faster than average for all professions,increasing 14% through 2016 (1). A growing population and increased need fornephrology services will drive job growth.

Job prospects are expected to be good especially for nephrologists with specialty trainingand extensive experience. Many job openings will stem from the need to replacenephrologists that retire, transfer, or leave the field for other reasons.

to become a doctor would spend 4 years Pre-med, and an additional 4 years in a medicalschool perfecting the area of medicine they are studying. Further schooling may benecessary to learn new procedures or be recertified for practicing medicine.

While premed is still an option, it is now looked highlyupon to take one of the above mentioned courses. completed, the trainee then must enter an internship at a hospital for a year where youwork 10-12 hours a day and are on call every third day (you sleep at the hospital and areready for emergencies around the clock). Once the internship is completed, a doctor thenenters a residency for 2-3 years under another doctor. If you will be doing surgery, youmust enter a surgical residency. Alas, the doctor then enters a 2-3 year fellowship underthe field of medicine he/she desires (for instance, renal medicine if they are going tobecome a nephrologist). Once this entire schedule is complete, the doctor can then begina practice. However, most doctors (especially medical diagnostic and treatmentspecialists who are specialized) must then complete about 50 hours of schoolingYEARLY to keep their information and studies up to date. It is rigorous, but it is alsorewarding.

A Harvard Medical School president designed the current medical school curriculum inthe late 1800s, and in the years since, HMS has continued to innovate and influence
