How to install Android KitKat v. 4.4.4 on Samsung’s Galaxy S GT-I9000 Procedure o I spent 1.5 day on rooting ( In Android devices, rooting is the process of allowing of smartphones, tablets and other devices to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's sub-system. ) and installing KitKat 4.4.4 (Almost Latest version of Android Operating System, though Android 5.0 - Lollipop is there as well) on my youngest son’s Galaxy s GT-I9000. A good phone for a starter, I think. o I had to understand the whole procedure first, search the right software and then had to go through hit & trial many times. Ultimately I succeeded but it was really a painful experience. Based on this troublesome journey, I decided to quickly share my experience with public before I forget the whole damn procedure. May be someone out there is looking for some advice on the subject. Not in much detail but it would sure help the people. Here is the procedure (By the way, same procedure is somewhat to be followed for so many Android mobile phones out there):- o Some pics of Galaxy S GT-I9000 are shown as Pics 1, 2 & 3.

  • How to install Android KitKat v. 4.4.4 on Samsungs Galaxy S GT-I9000

    Procedure

o I spent 1.5 day on rooting ( In Android devices, rooting is the

process of allowing of smartphones, tablets and other devices to

attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's

sub-system. ) and installing KitKat 4.4.4 (Almost Latest version of

Android Operating System, though Android 5.0 - Lollipop is there as

well) on my youngest sons Galaxy s GT-I9000. A good phone for a

    starter, I think.

o I had to understand the whole procedure first, search the right

software and then had to go through hit & trial many times.

Ultimately I succeeded but it was really a painful experience. Based

on this troublesome journey, I decided to quickly share my

experience with public before I forget the whole damn procedure.

May be someone out there is looking for some advice on the

subject. Not in much detail but it would sure help the people. Here

is the procedure (By the way, same procedure is somewhat to be

followed for so many Android mobile phones out there):-

    o Some pics of Galaxy S GT-I9000 are shown as Pics 1, 2 & 3.

o (Please note that NO further upgrade was possible by phone's own

'System Update' and more over device was locked for rooting so un-

rooting was also required. Without un-rooting, you can't do anything

to make changes in the system)

o The system information of Galaxy s GT-i9000 before

rooting/upgrade (Settings --> About) is shown in Pic 4.

(Note the Software version 2.3.5 Gingerbread)

I had to perform different tasks in the following order:-

o Check weather my device is rooted or not?

o To find a program to make the phone rooted (As mine was not rooted

o 'Rooted implies 'Having Super-User or administrative access'')

o To install a program which could install a new "Boot loader' and may

be help in installing the desired ROM for KitKat 4.4.4.

o To find the correct ROM - Again a challenging task.

o To cut the story short, this is how I proceeded:-

o I installed 'Root Checker Basic (2.33 MB)' by Joeykrim from 'Play

store (Picture 5a). It told me that my device was not 'Rooted'

    (Picture 5b)

  • 5a

o To solve this problem, I installed 'Kingo Android Root' software

(Picture 6) to transform my device into a 'Rooted' device.

  • 6

o On straight connection, Kingo asked for USB debugging to be

    enabled (Pics 7 & 8).

  • 7

    8

o I had to put my device in 'USB Debugging Mode' first, then

connect it via USB cable to computer (Picture 9 - 12).

  • 9 10

    11 12

  • o Now, when I connected the phone to computer, it was just

    a Click away task (Pic 13 & 14)

    13

  • 14

o It was time to verify whether device was now rooted or

not? It was as 'Root Checker Basic confirmed (Pic 15)

    15

o Next step was to find and install a new "Boot loader'. I

found ROM Manager for the task. The free version had

limitations, therefore, I went for a Premium Version

which had no restrictions (Pic 16).

o I used primarily the first option. On seeing my phone on

top, I used Flash ClockworkMod Recovery Option (Pic 17a

    & Pic 17b).

  • 17a 17b

o The last stub born item was the base Kernel Version which did

not allow the program above (ClockworkMod Recovery) to take its

rightful place. Because of this problem, whenever, I used to

reboot, the original useless 4 lines menu (Pic 18) came up, not

allowing me to install the new firmware ROM.

    o I found a better kernel CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS.TAR

    at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15188469 .

You can google this kernel at other places as well. I extracted it

to my Computer. Now, how to install it? For this, Odin_v3.09 (Pic

    19) was the right tool.

o Before you go any further, its time to download actual firmware or

ROM (Android KitKat v.4.4.4) (214.56 MB) and if you like

Applications Pack for this release. You can install most of these

    from Google Apps as well.

    o For firmware, I downloaded cm-11-20150316-NIGHTLY-

galaxysmtd.zip (It is in zip format and is to be copied to phone

memory as it is simply copy/paste it via usb cable in Windows

Explorer). If the link above is lost, you can google it at other places.

o For the proprietary Google-branded applications, I downloaded

    gapps-kk-20140606-signed.zip (150 MB).

o Lets get back to our mobile phone. By the way, we are almost done.

o To get the kernel updated through Odin, The phone was rebooted in

Download mode by pressing Power button, Volume Down button

    and Home button (Pic 20).

o When connected, the Odin software will show its details. Select the

Kernel File, we had downloaded on the desktop by pressing the

AP button. Before you press start button, things should look like as

indicated within blue boxes (Pic 21).

  • 21

o All set? Press the START button. If everything goes right, you get

    this screen (Pic 22).

  • 22

o The phone will restart and go into ClockworkMod recovery mode

(Pic 23). If it does not, bring it manually by pressing Power button +

Volume Up button + Home button (Pic 24).

  • 23

  • 24

o Once in root-boot mode, slip down to second option (By using

Volume button) and select the cm-11-20150316-NIGHTLY-

galaxysmtd.zip file, which we had copied to Phones internal

    memory earlier.

  • Hurrah, you have done it . I did it, to be more

precise o Here is the result of all this hassle

  • Thats all guys. I hope that it was of some help to you. Good Luck
