How Umno exploits fears of Pakatan among Malays

INTERVIEW Umno has successfully exploited the fears many Malays that a stronger

Pakatan Rakyat would mean a dominant DAP, said PAS central committee member Dr

Dzulkefly Ahmad.

According to Dzulkefly, this strategy was used by Umno with much success among therural and even some urban Malays, which surprisingly included Malay professionals,

former bureaucrats and technocrats.

These key groups of voters had voted against PAS and Pakatan in last month's general

election.

The former Kuala Selangor MP reported that it was not no longer a problem for the non-

Malays, especially the Chinese, to support Islamic-based PAS.

Given this, it is crucial for PAS and Pakatan to assuage the fears of the Malays, including

the professionals, before the 14th general election which is due in five years.

Backing his analysis with empirical evidence, Dzulkefly said though incumbent DrHalimah Ali successfully defended her Selat Kelang state constituency in Selangor with a

higher majority, she nevertheless lost the Malay - and especially young Malay votes - in

four polling stations.

Her bigger win was attributed to a large number of votes from non-Malays.

Shrewd ploy in fielding Zul Nordin

Similarly, in Shah Alam, many were expecting BN-backed Perkasa vice-presidentZulkifli Noordin to lose his deposit, but yet he garnered 38,000 votes in an urban area

that comprises educated voters, as well as a large number of professionals.

"Some of my neighbours who are professionals and former bureaucrats told me they

would vote PAS if the party was outside Pakatan for they feared a stronger influence by

DAP. They hate Umno, but their fear of Pakatan is because of the DAP.

"It is what we call a fear of success, or what is medically termed as 'atychiphobia' where,

for example, some women taking civil engineering as a profession may fear their success

would result in them losing their femininity.

"Similarly, in the case of PAS, this fear among the Malays of a potential Pakatan success

is that it could bring the downfall of Islam or the Malays. This is something that we haveto address," he added.

Dzulkefly also said some women professionals from Kolej Tunku Kurshiah had recentlyalso expressed similar fears and he told them that this may not happen if more PAS MPs

were elected.

All in all, he said, Umno won 88 seats compared with 51 garnered by the Malay MPs in

PKR and PAS combined.

"In 2008, Umno won 77 seats and it managed to increase it successfully through this

strategy."

Umno, he added, was quite shrewd in backing Perkasa leaders Ibrahim Ali and Zulkifli,

who are viewed as right-wing Malays, and "then you have PAS, which is seen as veryliberal in working with DAP".

Dzulkefly said Umno did this to show the entire spectrum of choices in ideological

conviction within the party.

"For voters, they will think they cannot go for Ibrahim or Zulkifli but in the end, many

Malays chose Umno to 'save themselves' from the Pakatan scourge.

"They (the Malays) may view Umno as not that bad and in the end, this position they take

will see them being sold out," he said.

"However, I believe many voters may have realised this now and regretted that they may

have missed a golden opportunity to change the federal government."

Rural votes still with Umno

The PAS leader also conceded that a significant number of rural votes went to Umno and

BN because they may have felt that they were left out of development.

At the same time, however, they have been buoyed by Umno's calls for Malay supremacy

and to uphold Islam, which were played up by the mainstream media, including state-owned radio and television.

For example, in Sri Gading in Johor, which is a typical profile of a Malay constituency in

the rural area, one could see Malays who have been left poor for decades. And yet this

constituency remains an Umno vote-bank.

Dzulkefly is pleased that the Pakatan government of Selangor will now focus on

development in the Malay belt areas of Sungai Besar, Sabak Bernam, Tanjung Karang,

Kuala Selangor and Hulu Selangor to improve their income and education levels.

"This was one way to win them over. Another is to have PAS leaders, such as the new

state executive councillor Sallehan Mukhyi (Sabak assemblyperson) in charge of religion,to ensure the upliftment of the religious and moral aspects of the community, so they will

not become an easy prey to vote buying and manipulation.

"This, as well as religious matters, are not entirely about religion but about living

decently, with honour, to stand on their own two feet and to get the people out of the

clutches of poverty," he said.

Yesterday, Dzulkefly claimed there had been vote buying on the last day of the recentgeneral election campaign, in which some voters in his constituency were asked to take a

religious vow to vote for BN to receive up to RM1,000 in cash each.

This has been described as "baseless and one-sided" by the eventual winner in the

contest, Kuala Selangor MP Irmohizam Ibrahim.

A west coast phenomenon

Dzulkefly said this campaign of fear took place only in the west coast and not in

Terengganu, which PAS nearly won back, or in Kelantan, which it retained despite losing

a few seats.

In Terengganu, he said, PAS was confident of winning back the state, much like it was

with Perak, and this was the reason why the PAS state leadership did well there.

"The fear of success did not worry the voters (there)... Terengganu is not at all disturbed

by the phobia as the DAP and Chinese factors did not picture big on their agenda. In

Perak, they knew fully well that PAS needed Chinese votes to win," he emphasised.

"Another factor going for PAS in Terengganu was that of popular cleric Ustaz Azhar

Idrus, who is from Terengganu and also a PAS member - his talks are popular and he has

reached out and attracted the masses," he said.

"And, in Kelantan, we have Tok Guru (former menteri besar) Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat,

who has been a major pull factor for PAS to retain the state," he said.

This, Dzulkefly said, showed the differences in political outlook between the east coast of

Peninsular Malaysia and the west coast.

"What can work well in Terengganu will not in Selangor."

"Indonesians asked me is it true if you and Pakatan Rakyat win the general election, 'habis lahMalaysia' (or Malaysia is finished), the Chinese would swipe everything," Anwar said during aBlack 505 rally in Batu Pahat on Sunday night.

"My answer was that it is true our Chinese leaders are now smarter, brave and better qualified.So what we must do is to pick Malays leaders who are smarter and better quaified . And if weselect corrupt Malay leaders, once they win, prices will rise, (tycoon) Syed Mokhtar will get half abillion and (tycoon) Ananda millions."

Umno gains notoriety

The information let slip by the 64-year-old Anwar is indeed a sharp reflection on Prime MinisterNajib Razak's Umno party and how far and wide its notoriety for racism had become.

In the run up to the May 5 general election, Umno leaders including Najib had consistently used

the 'race' card to rally support from the predominant Malay electorate. Their divide-and-ruletactics continued after the election, with Najib himself blaming a 'Chinese tsunami' for the BN'sweak performance.

Najib's comment spurred an article 'Apa lagi Cina mau' or 'what more do the Chinese want' fromUmno-controlled newspaper Utusan - suggesting that the Chinese were ungrateful and disloyaldespite being given opportunities to prosper. Not surprisingly, the comments were condemned bythe community, who were angered by the stereotyping.

Interracial relations in Indonesia too have been shrouded in controversy, and at the height ofAsian Financial Crisis in 1998, hardliners in the country had gone on rampage against the tinyChinese community there, prompting a flight of capital to neighboring Singapore.

Anwar had flown to the Indonesian capital at the invitation of President Susilo Bambang

Yudhoyono, who had wanted to know about the alleged vote-rigging and fraud in Malaysia's 5thgeneral election.

"President SBY wanted to know what was happening in Malaysia and issued the invitation due tothe increased coverage by the Indonesian media, which has been covering the Malaysiansituation extensively. The feeling there is that the electoral fraud committed was excessive and ifit had happened in Indonesia, there would have been a revolt," Anwar told the 10,000-odd crowdwho attended the rally at Parit Raja, Batu Pahat.

Shahidan Kassim for accusing the Chinese of having racist mindset.

PETALING JAYA: DAP today fired a salvo against Minister in the Prime Ministers

Department, Shahidan Kassim, for accusing the Chinese of having a racist mindset.

The Chinese community voted for PAS not because it is a Chinese party. Obviously,

they did not also pick Anwar Ibrahim as their choice for prime minister because he is aChinese.

They picked him because they see Anwar as Malaysian first, who will fight abuse of

power and prioritise the interest of the downtrodden, regardless of race, religion orcreed, said DAP publicity chief Tony Pua.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Shahidan as saying that the Chinese should break away

from the racist mindset, allegedly inculcated by the opposition and integrate with other

races.

If the Chinese are willing to cross racial boundaries and integrate with Malaysiansociety, and practise power sharing, I believe Malaysia would one day have a prime

minister of Chinese ethnicity, said Shahidan.

Pua said that Pakatan Rakyat, particularly DAP, had never campaigned on a Chinese

political platform and had never stood against Malay political interest.

He also said if DAP did campaign on a racist platform, the pro-establishment media

would have televised the matter widely as proof of the partys racist agenda.

But our platform had always been on the idea of creating a country that is free fromcorruption and cronyism, where the nations wealth can be shared among all Malaysians,

and not just those who are politically connected, said the Petaling Jaya Utara MP.

Umno dividing the nation

Pua added that the Chinese community has no problems seeing anyone holding the

premiership, as long as the person serves as a prime minister for all, not just for a selectgroup of cronies.

Training his guns at Shahidan, Pua said that no Umno leader had accused the Chinese of

being racist when they voted overwhelmingly for MCA in the past.

When Malays vote overwhelmingly for Umno last time, it is never racism. WhenChinese voted for MCA in the past, it was not racism.

But when Malays increased their support for Pakatan Rakyat candidate, Umno accused

DAP of spreading propaganda that influenced educated Malays.

And when the Chinese voted strongly for the opposition, it is proof of Chinese racism. It

is nothing but utter gibberish coming from Umno leaders, said Pua.

The DAP leader urged Umno leaders to stop dividing the nation along racial lines just to

scare the Malays by accusing the Chinese of being a power hungry community.

Umno leaders must realise that the only way for them to remain in power is to adopt

Malaysian first concept, as per their own 1Malaysia slogan, said Pua.

Shahidan's tirade: A glimpse of Najib's revved-up anti-

Chinese politicking ahead

The misplaced tirade against the Chinese in Malaysia, whether intentional or otherwise,

continues with the new Minister in Prime Ministers Department, Datuk Seri ShahidanKassim latest salvo published in Sinchew Daily yesterday.

He said that if the Chinese Malaysians who have been indoctrinated with extreme

racism by the DAP can ditch their racist mindset, he believes that Malaysia wouldone day have a prime minister of Chinese ethnicity.

He was quoted to say (You) cannot lead the people if (you) believe too much in racial

power. If one day the Chinese could get rid of this mindset, Malaysia could also have a

Chinese as prime minister.

Power crazy & greedy

This statement is not only an uncalled for attempt to insult Malaysian Chinese as racists,

it is a clear cut attempt to insinuate that Malaysian Chinese are a power-crazy and greedycommunity whose ultimate goal is to take over the Prime Ministership of this country. It

is part of UMNOs continued attempt to divide the nation by having the Malay

community remain completely frightful of the fairy-tale eventuality of losing politicalpower.

Taking leaf from the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Datuk Seri

Shahidan even accused the Chinese of not participating in activities organised by the

government, but chose to be involved in the illegal street rallies held by the opposition.

It clearly shows that to these UMNO leaders, any support given Pakatan Rakyat as analternative to Barisan Nasional will be deemed racist in nature, even if the support is

given to fight the blatant racism of parties like UMNO.

When Malays vote overwhelmingly for UMNO in the past, it is never racism. WhenChinese voted for MCA in the past, that cant be racism. However, when Malays

increased their support for Pakatan Rakyat candidates in the same election, Dr Mahathiraccused DAP of spreading propaganda that influenced educated Malays. And when the

Chinese voted strongly for Pakatan Rakyat, that according to UMNO, is proof of Chineseracism. That is complete and utter gibberish coming from UMNO leaders.

Divide and rule

UMNO leaders like Tun Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Shahidan perpetuate the above liesbecause they believe that the only way to maintain UMNOs control of in the country and

to share the wealth of the nation only with the politically connected elite, is by

demonising the non-Malay community with artificial claims of racism, even if theclaims are themselves racist.

UMNO leaders fear a Malaysia where Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Dayaks and

other minority communities become united to fight cronyism and corruption among the

ruling BN elite. Hence the desperate need to use all racist means keep Malaysia dividedby race and religion.

The DAP never campaigned on a Chinese political power platform. We never

campaigned against Malay political interests. If we did, Malaysians can be assured that

such campaign speeches will be televised and condemned widely in all broadcast andprint media as proof of DAP racism. Instead, throughout our election campaigns, our

leaders harped only on the singular point of creating a country that is free from corruption

and cronyism, where the nations wealth can be shared among all Malaysians, and notjust those who are politically connected.

For the Chinese community, they have no interest whatsoever in seeing a Chinese

installed as a Prime Minister of Malaysia. They dont care if the Prime Minister of the

country is a Malay, Indian, Kadazan or Iban, as long as he is a Prime Minister for allMalaysians and not just for a select group of cronies or race.

The Chinese community did not give their votes to PAS because PAS is a Chinese party.They certainly did not pick Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as their preferred choice of Prime

Minister because he is a Chinese. They picked him because they see him as Malaysianfirst, who will fight abuse of power and prioritise the interest of the poor and

disadvantaged, regardless of race, religion or creed.

UMNO Ministers and leaders will need to learn that the only way to stop the inevitability

of losing their grip on power in Malaysia is to adopt the Malaysian first principle as

platform will end all hopes of BN ever recovering from their election losses in 2008 and

2013.

demanded a Chinese PM.

Pemerhati: It is amazing that the senior member of Umno, which itself is a racist

organisation and which at every opportunity loudly and proudly proclaims its racist

slogan, Untuk Bangsa, Ugama dan Negara, has the audacity and cheek to call the

discriminated Chinese minority racist.

Despite being subjected to severe discrimination by Umno, the Chinese minority has

done well in the private sector and according to former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the

father of racism, this minority contributes about 80 percent of the taxes.

The salaries of people like Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassimand the other public service officials get paid from these taxes. He should therefore stop

biting the hand that feeds him and instead use his brains a little and ask this question:

If the Chinese are able to do very well in the private sector and help the Malays and the

country by paying disproportionately high taxes, would they also not do well in other

Having eight full-fledged ministers in the PMs Department, Shahidans role in it is just

that - talking crap and collecting his perks and monthly salary.

RKR: I have two questions for Shahidan:

1) Which social media is asking the Chinese to grab power?

One cannot be a Chinese and be prime minister because what the former Perlis MB has

forgotten is that when race no longer matters, religion will come into the picture - theChinese candidate has to be a Muslim, and perhaps only then would the Malay electorate

consider it.

It is not about being racial, it is more about assimilation of the Chinese and the Indians

into Islam and becoming Malays eventually. If this can be achieved, only then can any

Malaysian can be PM.

Abasir: So Shahidan is actually saying that MCA has been racist, untrustworthy and

double dealing with Umno all these years.

Umno, according to him, has never been race-oriented and never focussed on 'bangsa dan

agama'. We must call for a royal commission of inquiry to find out what it is he has been
