Dear Parish Family,

Praise be Jesus Christ! Lent is just a few days away, are you ready? I confess, I am not. But God

knows I am trying and I am filled with the excitement that comes to my heart each year during this

beautiful season. I am so grateful that the Church offers us this time to cut back, fast, pray and

give alms.

As I mentioned last week, I am offering myself and all of you a challenge: go big! This is a great time to stretch yourself and

feel some pain. I know, I know, we have had enough pain through 2020, but hear me out. I am not suggesting that we

should make ourselves miserable, but that we seek freedom from the pain of slavery. Freedom to truly live. I suggest that

we look with renewed eyes upon this season.

Allow me to explain. I remember the days of grade school when I would dread this season of fasting, no meat on Fridays,

giving alms, more prayer, and on top of it all, stations of the cross. I would go every Friday with my parents to the stations

and often I would serve for the priest holding a candle or the crucifix. I can remember my arms burning about the 6th or 7th

station as the weight of the candle seems to increase. I would try to offer it up and stand tall thinking to myself, “the more

pain the more gain.” As I entered the first years of seminary, I was all about doing really hard things, maybe for God, but

mostly to outdo my brother seminarians. I was seeing the externals but not looking through to what the meaning was

underneath.

With the Exodus 90 challenges or the suggestions of the Fiat 90 program we could be tempted to fall into the same thing.

We could be thinking, “I am going to crush these penances and make an acceptable offering to our Lord. He will be so

pleased with me.” But in doing this we make a huge oversight. We could miss the point of Lent completely. And what is

the point? To end up in the desert with our Lord so that we can come out with Him renewed and refreshed. To be united

with Him so that we can then truly live. We must allow ourselves to be stripped of our attachments so that we can be

clothed in virtue.

Lent is about allowing the Incarnation to happen in our lives. Our Lord clothed Himself in our sinful flesh so to adorn it with

justification. We can choose to keep our old clothes, and in fact we often do. But this is to choose to remain a slave. The

greatness of Lent is to look beyond the externals and to allow the penance, prayer and almsgiving to bring us to the reality

that God is calling us to a relationship with Him. I have said it before and I will say it again, the answer to everything is the

Incarnation. And the season of Lent is the preparation for the climax of the Incarnation; the passion, death and resurrec-

tion of Christ. If we enter into this great reality by allowing our weakness to show forth, His strength, saying yes to the invi-

tation to be set free, and doing all of this with humility and joy, then the Lord will work in us the best Lent ever!

These last couple weeks of Ordinary time have helped us to enter into the present moment. Each week we have heard

about the amazing teachings, miracles and casting out of demons which the Lord worked in each scene. These weeks help

to bring us to see how He is still doing that now in our own lives. The Church prepares us to focus on the grace in each mo-

ment and now, as we start our walk into Lent, let us not forget this gift of grace in each moment. God has a gift for you, it

is Himself. Let God prepare you to Live through Him, with Him and in Him. Live to be free! Live to be a saint! Live Lent!

The end will surely be, Living the Risen Christ at Easter.

I encourage you to come to the Stations of the Cross on the Friday’s of Lent. They begin at 4:30pm. Following will be take

out Fish Dinners by the Knights of Columbus.

While you may not be able to attend Mass and re-ceive the Eucharist, this simple and loving act of Spiritual Communion may be prayed during televised and on-line masses.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at the moment receive You sacra-mentally, please come spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You now as if You were already there and I unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

SUNDAY MASS DISPENSATION

EXTENDED

Bishop Walter Hurley, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese

of Gaylord, has announced the extension of the dispensation

for all Catholics within the Diocese of Gaylord from the obliga-

tion of attending Sunday Mass until further notice.

The granting of this dispensation is not to discourage those

who are able to attend Sunday Mass from doing so, but rather

to enable anyone who needs to stay at home to protect the

common good (their own or that of others) may do so confi-

dently and in good conscience.

The protocols for Mass that have been established during this

pandemic for the well-being and safety of all remain in place

for parishes within the Diocese of Gaylord, namely: the re-

quired use of masks; limited singing; limited attendance to

maintain social distancing and cleansing of the churches ac-

cording to CDC guidelines;

“All are asked to carefully observe these protocols because we

care for each other and love each other as the Lord has called

us to,” said Bishop Hurley. The celebration of the Eucharist/

Sunday Mass should be at the very core of our faith life, and

we are all called to keep holy the Lord’s day. We must each

seek to find time for prayer and spiritual Communion with the

Lord, even if we cannot be present for the celebration of Eu-

charist. Please continue to pray with me for consolation and

relief from the pandemic. May we look forward to the day with

fervent hope when we may be able to return to Mass together.
