Math

Mad Dog Math Facts Mastery (G1-6, Mrs. Kotoff) — The foundation for strong math literacy is math facts mastery. It is the gateway to fractions, which in turn, is the gateway to algebra. Students who master their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts are better equipped to tackle higher-level math problems later on. The Mad Dog Math (MDM) System will help students learn tricks and techniques to make acquiring math facts simpler and easier. The MDM System, along with Marcy Cook Tile Cards and various math games, will be utilized in the classroom at three separate stations. Tricks and individual fact families (one per week) will be taught at the Teacher Station. Exciting math games to reinforce concepts will be played at the Math GamesStation. Analytical skills will be challenged at the Tile Station. This multi-level class will also be divided into groups according to grade level. Grades 1-2 will focus on addition and subtraction facts, while grades 3-6 will concentrate on multiplication and division facts. All students will move through the 3 stations each week to master facts at their own pace. Mom helpers will assist in overseeing two individual stations throughout the year. With hard work, deliberate intention, and repetition, students will gain confidence as each new fact family is mastered. If your child finds math frightening, laborious, or discouraging, then this is the class for him or her. If your child is in need of acquiring math facts, or moving from accuracy to automaticity (fast, accurate recall with very little thought), then this class is the answer. Teaching videos are available on Mrs. Kotoff's website (MadDogMath.com) to help parents understand the program and reinforce the math tricks at home. This class makes learning math facts fun!

Registration Fee: $29526-week scheduleMaterial Fee: $5 for miscellaneous classroom supplies

Recommended text or supplies:$$16 for flash cards & $68 per academic school year (both required) for the web-based version of the Mad Dog Math program called Mad Dog Math-ANYWHERE. (Can be accessed by PC’s, Mac’s, and tablets). Purchasing information will be provided by the instructor.

Mrs. Julie Kotoff taught in Christian schools for most of her teaching career with one year in a Compton public school. She also worked as an administrator at Calvary Chapel's MCA, mentoring teachers and coordinating curriculum from kindergarten through sixth grade. Because of her fervent desire to help students succeed in math, she developed and perfected MAD DOG MATH. An exciting, motivating, and challenging program to help students commit math facts to memory. She is currently using her expertise to cultivate a solid foundation of math skills for home school students.

Beyond Math Facts (G4-8, Mrs. Halverson) — This course builds and reinforces previously mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts, and familiarizes students with higher-level math skills, in a fun, stress-free environment. The “Right Start” Mathematics program uses a system of games, from grouping numbers into fives and tens, to equivalency conversions (1/2 = .5 = 50%), for quick recognition of quantities. Interesting and engaging group games provide varied repetition that is needed to build automatic responses to math facts and concepts. Games create a stress-free atmosphere where students at multiple grade levels are allowed to learn at their own pace. Each student’s ability and math level will be considered. As a supplement to any math curriculum, students will participate in a variety of group math games that are both kinesthetic and visual, utilizing Right Start, Math Card Games and a variety of others. The Right Start Program provides up to 300 unique games that help students think critically and apply math concepts, such as number sense, +, -, x, div, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Instruction will be provided, and rules clearly explained, prior to each game or activity. Students build automaticity (fast, accurate recall with very little thought), and knowledge of math concepts that are appropriate to their skill level. Right Start has its own mathcurriculum, but it is not required for student participation in class. Beyond Math Facts games compliment any math program. Students will be given a short math facts assessment to fill out on the first day of class, and games will be chosen accordingly.

Registration Fee: $245/year26-week schedule Material Fee: $20/year for classroom supplies provided by instructor

US History-Based Writing with IEW (G4-6, Mrs. Lamson) - This course draws from US history-inspired themes, and provides students with the opportunity to incrementally learn essential skills that lead to writing compositions. Thirty-two curriculum lessons will cover captivating topics ranging from colonial life and The Revolutionary War to The Lewis and Clark Expedition and The California Gold Rush. Using a theme or literature-based writing curriculum captivates young writers and provides thoughtful content and “keywords” that make the writing process approachable and successful, even for reluctant writers who would otherwise have a “blank page” on which to write. Students will build stronger vocabulary, grammar, and outlining skills while completing assignments provided by the instructor for the week ahead. The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) approach by Andrew Pudewa is based on “key word outlines” that the student builds from literary selections. By adding quality adjectives, strong verbs, “ly” adverbs, clauses, and sentence openers, students learn how to make their writing assignments unique and interesting. The US History-Based Writing curriculum incrementally enhances skills as students progress through the units. Students receive helpful tools to construct cohesive paragraphs. Mrs. Lamson is well-versed in the IEW principles of writing, and

The determination of levels will be based on the needs of enrolled families. All students will be trained in technique, musicianship, literacy, and improvisation. For the beginning level, students will learn proper rest position, playing position, and arm and hand positions; pizzicato technique and bow technique; tone production and intonation; D major scale; solo and group performance; artistic expression; and team work. The Intermediate level will provide instruction that will build upon the curriculum of beginning strings. In addition, students will learn proper playing position in the right and left hands while performing on all four strings; learn to produce slurs and p, f, mp, andmf dynamics; play in G major and C major scales; use fourth finger when appropriate instead of an open string; play with effective tone production on all four strings; learn technical alterations (bow hold, angle, placement according to the bridge, etc.); and develop articulation, phrasing, and tempo. Incorporating music instruction and participating in a strings ensemble can be a valuable experience for students as they learn teamwork and develop personal discipline in practicing their instrument.
