BREAST CANCER RESEARCH BREAST AWARENESS

WITH THE HELP OF FUNDS

RAISED BY OUR SUPPORTERS,

BREAKTHROUGH SCIENTISTS

HAVE:

LAUNCHED THE MOSTcomprehensive investigation

ever undertaken into thecauses of breast cancer, inpartnership with The Institute of

Cancer Research. Involving 100,000 women and spanning40 years, the Breakthrough Generations Study, will give usthe information needed to help us find out how to preventthe disease in the future.www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk

LAUNCHED THETRIPLE NEGATIVE

TRIAL with CancerResearch UK - the first UK basedclinical trail for women with‘triple negative’ breast cancerthat has spread to another part

of the body. Triple negative tumours do not respond tohormone therapy or Herceptin so they are currentlydifficult to treat. This type of tumour is also more commonin younger women and those of African ethnicity.

LAUNCHED THE WORLD’SLARGEST CLINICAL TRIAL

investigating whetheracupuncture may help women withbreast cancer cope with cancer-relatedfatigue, a major side-effect of breastcancer treatment. The ACU.FATIGUEstudy is the first in Breakthrough’sprogramme of high quality, scientific

research into complementary therapies - an area wherethere is a real lack of information about effectiveness and safety.

SET UP THE LARGEST EVER STUDY into thecauses of male breast cancer with The Institute of

Cancer Research. Around 300 men are diagnosedwith breast cancer every year in the UK, but little is knownabout why this happens. This five year study aims to findpotentially preventable causes of breast cancer in men.

SET UP THREE NEW BREAKTHROUGH BREASTCANCER RESEARCH UNITS in Edinburgh, London

and Manchester. Each unit will complement workat the Breakthrough Research Centre. They will havestrong links with a major cancer hospital and researchinstitute or university, and will help Breakthroughachieve its goal of turning laboratory findings intobenefits for cancer patients as quickly as possible.

Breakthrough isunique in that its

supporters can visitthe charity’s researchcentre. I find everyvisit inspiring - wemeet many people withdirect experience ofbreast cancer and it’s apoignant reminder thatour work makes adifference.”Clare IsackeDeputy DirectorBreakthrough ResearchCentre

Improving diagnosis and treatment Breakthrough Breast Cancer established the UK’s first dedicated breast cancer research centre inLondon, in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research, in 1999. Here world-class scientistscarry out pioneering research into breast cancer, bringing together different research specialismsunder one roof. This innovative, focused approach should result in scientific discoveries that bringdirect benefits to cancer patients more quickly.

That’s why Breakthrough Breast Cancer recommends allwomen show their breasts some TLC. This means:

Touch your breasts. Feel for anything unusualLook for changes. Be aware of their shape and textureCheck anything unusual with your doctor. Chat with yourfriends if you are worried.

Visit www.touchlookcheck.org.uk for more information.

Being breast aware doesn't mean following a fancy routine forexamining your breasts, it just means being familiar with how theylook and feel so that you notice changes and can report anythingunusual to your doctor. If cancer is diagnosed, prompt treatmentoffers the best chance of a successful outcome.

IT’S NOT ONLY LUMPS YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FORAlthough most women associate breast lumps with breast cancer, there are other, less well known signs to look out for, including:

Size or shape - e.g. one breast might become larger or lower than the other.

Changes in skin texture - such as puckering or dimpling of the skin.

Appearance or direction of nipple - e.g. one nipple might become inverted(turned-in).

Discharge - one or both nipples might discharge a blood-stained liquid.

Rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area.

Lump in the breast or armpit.

Lumpy area or unusual thickening of breast tissue that doesn't go away afteryour period.

Pain in part of the breast or armpit that is unrelated to periods.

Remember, nine out of ten breast lumps are not cancerous.

WHAT CAUSES BREAST CANCER?Breast cancer is thought to be caused by acombination of our genes, lifestyle and environment, however very little is known about the exact causes.

Breakthrough’s award- winning booklet: Breast CancerRisk Factors: The Facts, helps people understandmore about what may alter their chances of developingthe disease. Visit www.breakthrough.org.uk/riskfactors

Breakthrough is also funding the most comprehensiveinvestigation ever undertaken into the causes of breastcancer - The Breakthrough Generations Study, inpartnership with the Institute of Cancer ResearchVisit www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITHBREAST CANCER?Breakthrough’s The Best Treatment Guidelinesprovides women with early breast cancer theinformation they need to be active partners in theircare. It explains what treatments are available, howeffective they can be and which may be best for them.

The Guidelines combine research andrecommendations from the National Institute forHealth and Clinical Excellence (NICE) with theexperience of women with breast cancer. These will beavailable to download from www.breakthrough.org.ukthis October.

Show your breasts some TLC: Touch, Look, Check Last year, a Breakthrough survey found that although the vast majorityof women consider themselves breast aware and check for breast lumps, many remain unaware of the full range of signs and symptoms to lookout for (Breakthrough Breast Cancer ICM Research survey, 2007).

One microscopeplus computerimaging softwarewill cost around£25,000.

LEFT IN THE DARK - ENSURING PEOPLE ONLY HAVE TOWAIT TWO WEEKS TO SEE A SPECIALISTWaiting for a breast cancer diagnosis is extremely distressingregardless of the outcome. In 2007, Breakthrough’s Left in theDark campaign secured a Government commitment that byDecember 2009 everyone referred with breast problems willsee a specialist within two weeks. The campaign continues topush the Government to keep its promise.

BREAKTHROUGH CAMPAIGNS &ADVOCACY NETWORKBreakthrough CAN is a network of over1,000 people and organisations who workwith the charity to make an extraordinarydifference to the lives of those affected bybreast cancer by campaigning forimprovements to their local breast cancer

services. This October, Breakthrough CAN members will taketheir local breast cancer issues and concerns to MPs atWestminster as part of Breakthrough's flagship lobbying event, the Westminster Fly-In.

Campaigning for better breast cancer treatments and services for allBreakthrough Breast Cancer campaigns to ensure that Government and NHS policies help peopleaffected by breast cancer to get the best possible services and treatments wherever they live. Thiscovers everything from how long it takes to be seen by a breast specialist and waiting times for testsand treatment, through to issues about information provision and access to expert support, adviceand counselling.

Breakthrough’s methods are diverse, ranging from parliamentarywork and grass roots campaigning by members of theBreakthrough Campaigns and Advocacy Network (BreakthroughCAN), to forming partnerships with health professionals andother cancer charities.

Our ongoing campaigns include:

SCREENING SAVES LIVESBreast screening is vital to the early detectionof breast cancer and Breakthrough’sScreening Saves Lives campaign aims toensure that all eligible UK women have accessto the best possible screening services. Thiscampaign won the backing of Prime MinisterGordon Brown in September 2007, when he

announced that the NHS Breast Screening Programme will beextended to women aged 47-73 by the end of 2012 (it is currentlyoffered to women aged between 50-70).
