The Mount Grace priory

3D History for eveyoneMOUNT GRACE PRIORY, Nord YorkshireEngland

On 4 adjacent regions in New World, we are building Mount Grace and its immediate environment. This is thanks to the generosity of the French Non Profit Organization ‘Virtus’, which promotes arts and educational projects.

The priory was established in 1398 as part of a wide and thriving European network of Carthusian monasteries famed for their austere style of spritual life, their commitment to the preservation of literature at a time when few people could read, and their hospitality to travellers: an interesting mixture! It was disestablished in 1539 by agents of King Henry VIII of england, as part of his greed, his jealousy, and his quarrel with Rome.

Please note. This venture in educational simulation has no formal links with any of the bodies that care for the RL site, although informal links are being developed. (November 2009).

Developments at Mount Grace

Work on the main cloister continues and will be complete once the south wall and its walkway are done. Visitors will notice that the western cloister is of still of wood, and that our simulation shows the moment in the very early years of the 15th century when its replacement with stone and carved windows began.

Mediaeval builders and gardeners

A sim of the size and complexity takes time, and draws on the talents of several people. Our chief builders are Christi Maeterlinck (overall strategy, layout accuracy, and buildings); Gale Sterling (consultant on building precision and the problems of structures built across sim borders); and Romsey Homewood (consultant and builder of complex scultptie structures). Our chief gardener is Dordy Gail (provider of plant textures and builds; monk’s specialisations).

Christi Maeterlinck

« Most of my time is spent here on Mount Grace, though I still keep an island, Faerun, in Second Life. I’m familiar with the RL Mount Grace having lived nearby for many years. It’s peaceful now, a national monument carefully tended by English Heritage. Once it was an interesting mixture of spiritual energy, contemplative peace, and a bustling support community, and it’s my hope to re-create a flavour of all of this. »

Gale Sterling

« I used to build in SL for pay. I came to New World to do a sim build for a friend, liked it here, and stayed. I am happy to help with projects here, time permitting. I am also more than happy to teach folks about building, one on one. The style I use I call ‘By the numbers face sprung duplicating’. It allows me to build more quickly and cleanly than the normal drag/pull method.»

Dordy Gail

« I’m Dordy Gail, and I have been searching for and making textures for the Mount Grace Priory vegetable gardens. Each garden has its own special character, reflecting the skills and interests of the monk who lives there. I especially enjoyed making the bee keeper’s garden, the flying bees, and the soothing sound they make. (Be careful, they might swarm!)Now I am making the herbalist monk’s garden. The rest of the gardens are under way, with varied vegetables and flowers, as varied as the times allowed. »

Romsey Homewood

« Hello New World Grid residents ! My name is Romsey Homewood and i build sculpted prims using Blender. I have been a resident of Second Life for over 3 years now (seems longer) and i am still having a great time there. I was invited to NWG by Christi Maeterlinck and have been creating sculpted prims for Mount Grace Priory which is already one of the great features of NWG. Learning Blender has been a long, hard road but i think i have got

it now since discovering how to utilise Oblong Sculpties enabling me to create intricate and detailed objects using just one prim which rez well and have the best level of detail possible for the current viewers. As well as contributing builds for Christi i am making items for the very talented Gale Sterling from the Lorinea sim which is looking fantastic. I look forward to having the opportunity to make more things for the fabulous New World Grid ! If you have a not too technical question about Blender or anything else please ask and i will try and help. »
