Do you know what each of those proverbs means? Would you have chosen the same ones as the top ten proverbs on the list? Have you ever adapted any of these (such as the adaptation of #5 that I saw on a bumper sticker: When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!)? And, for our purposes today, the most important question: Where did these proverbs originate? (For example, #6 came from a seventeenth-century sermon preached by the English author John Donne). With that last thought in mind, I want to ask you about two more sayings: 1. The writing’s on the wall. 2. Your days are numbered. Do you know where those two sayings originated? Do you know what they meant and mean? Many will recognize their origin, but others won’t. So just in case you don’t—or in case you’re interested in finding out more—join us for today’s study of Daniel 5. According to one website, here are the first ten of the 50 most important English proverbs:

1. Two wrongs don’t make a right.2. The pen is mightier than the sword.3. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.4. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.5. When the going gets tough, the tough get

going.6. No man is an island.7. Fortune favors the bold.8. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t

throw stones.9. Hope for the best, but prepare for the

worst.10. Better late than never.

Do you know what each of those proverbs means? Would you have chosen the same ones as the top ten proverbs on the list? Have you ever adapted any of these (such as the adaptation of #5 that I saw on

a bumper sticker: When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!)? And, for our purposes today, the most important question: Where did these proverbs originate? (For example, #6 came from a seventeenth-century sermon preached by the English author John Donne).

With that last thought in mind, I want to ask you about two more sayings:

1. The writing’s on the wall.2. Your days are numbered.

Do you know where those two sayings originated? Do you know what they meant and mean? Many will recognize their origin, but others won’t. So just in case you don’t—or in case you’re interested in finding out more—join us for today’s study of Daniel 5.
