Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa

HUS is a Joint Authority founded by the municipalities in Uusimaa and which began operations in 2000.

We are tasked with providing specialised health care services for the residents of our member municipalities. Our operational starting point is the effective and timely treatment of patients throughout Uusimaa.

Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH), which operates in the Helsinki metropolitan area as part of HUS, is also responsible for treatment of all Finnish citizens with difficult and rare diseases, and those in need of treatment requiring the most sophisticated equipment, such as organ transplants and many cancer treatments.

Research and education form a key part of our operations

As a university hospital district our task is to provide practical education in medicine and dental medicine as well as the conditions for associated scientific research. The Helsinki University Central Hospital, HUCH, is the country’s largest teaching and research environ-ment for medicine and dental medicine.

In 2009 clinical basic education in Medicine and Dental Medicine was given to approxi-mately 600 students. Several hundred medical specialists study and work in our hospitals, which also provide practical training for approximately 3,700 future health care professionals each year.

HUS’s greatest strengths lie in its expertise, its attentive owners and its customers(May 2009)

The Hospitals within HUCH are in charge of all organ transplant operations nationwide
