Video Analysis: An Essential Aspect of Modern HockeyIf ever there was a discipline that has

taken on a decisive role in modern

hockey over the past decade, it is

that of video analysis. This essential

and painstaking work not only allows

coaching staff to improve a team’s

tactical performance on the field, but

also to discover the loopholes and

openings in the opponent’s system. First

emerging in the early 2000s through the

analysis of VHS tapes, developments

and technological progress to cameras,

software and computers have enabled

refinements to working methods and

data interpretation.

Today, coding is performed live during

the games and it is possible to view

penalty corners or phases of the game

mere seconds after they have taken

place. The entire staff spends dozens

of hours per week working on video

clips to analyze collective and individual

performance. In turn, the players also

use this tool to dissect their performance

and study the style of play and specifics

of each of their opponents.

What else? Hockey was one of

the pioneers of video analysis in team

sports, along with American football and

rugby. While today’s football clubs also

have their own analyst, this was still far

from being the case five years ago!

Story of the dayWhen Australia meets Pakistan

European countries are not the only ones making their appearance on the fields in Brasschaat. The borders of the countries of the Hockey World League exceed the European continent and pass through the South China Sea all the way to the Tasman Sea. 15 countries, including exotics such as Malaysia, Pakistan, New Zealand and Korea, enter the fraye.

This allows us to distinguish a variety of languages such as Polish, Mandarin, Urdu and Korean on and off the field. In the stands a man dressed as a French rooster is crowing of joy after a victory of Les Bleus. In the press room we meet the friendly Indian journalist V. Krishnaswamy and producer Abhijit Das, the Italian journalist Carla Cotelli and Neville Dawson, a photographer from New Zealand. There even is an American volunteer around the venue!

On Tuesday, the diversity of languages led to a hilarious scene in the mixed zone, where players and journalists meet after the game. There was a remarkable interview of Fleur Van de Kieft with the Japanese player Okaiwa Shihori. The Japanese didn’t speak English and the conversation didn’t go as smooth as planned. We nearly had to fly over a Japanese translator from Tokyo. The interview is available on the Youtube channel of Road2Rio.

Fortunately everything always goes well in the end. We can be pleased to have such a global diversity in hockey!

Although hockey has already been popular in Europe for more than a hundred years, it

was only during the 1970s that the sport gradually started being introduced into China.

And it took another twenty years or so for the country to start to have suitable areas made

available to finally allow the sport to start developing properly. Up until that point, hockey

players had only had a single artificial turf ground made available throughout the whole

territory. In 1975, four coaches were sent to Pakistan for a first observational tour. The

following summer, the sport finally developed in the region of Beijing and the province

of Heilongjiang. And if the women’s team worked hard to reach the world’s top ten, the

men, by contrast, have trouble making their way. In the past, most of the Chinese players

originated from Mongolia, where the locals play Boikoo tarkbei, also called Daur hockey (a

sport played with an apricot kernel and wooden sticks). The country is without doubt the

great unknown of this tour in Anvers,

although during the previous tour, in

South Africa, it showed that it had

been making constant progress. It

is, in any case, a considerable new

market for the International Hockey

Federation, which has made it a

priority for development along with

Bangladesh.

• Two time Olympian Madonna Blyth will set a new record when she becomes Australian hockey’s most capped female player of all time. She will play her 304th cap against New Zealand and so beat the record of Nikki Hudson (303). Blyth has been an influential leader in the Australian women’s program since becoming captain in 2009, and since then she has assisted the Hockeyroos from seventh in the world rankings to second over a two-year period.

• Player for Great Britain, David Ames, turns 26 today. Happy Birthday David !

• Tonight at 8pm the Australian women meet New Zealand in a big Tasmanian clash. The game between neighbours is a confrontation on top level. Australia is number two of the world and New Zealand number four. The Australians already said they would need to play better than yesterday in order to beat their rival.

• Today Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin wil play his 200th cap for Malaysia. Also the Korean Kim Jong Eun will defend for the 200th time the colors of her country.

L’analyse vidéo incontournable dans le hockey moderneS’il existe bien une discipline qui a pris

une place déterminante dans le hockey

moderne au cours de ces dix dernières

années, c’est celle de l’analyse vidéo. Un

travail essentiel et minutieux qui permet

au staff d’améliorer les performances

tactiques de son équipe sur le terrain

mais également de découvrir les failles

et les ouvertures dans le système de son

adversaire. Apparu au début des années

2000, avec l’analyse à partir de cassettes

VHS, l’évolution et les progrès techniques

des caméras, des logiciels et des

ordinateurs ont permis d’affiner les

méthodes de travail et l’interprétation des

données.

Aujourd’hui, le codage s’effectue, en

direct, pendant les rencontres et il est

possible de visionner des p.c. ou des

phases de jeu, seulement quelques

secondes après qu’elles se soient

déroulées. L’ensemble du staff passe

ainsi des dizaines d’heures par semaine

à travailler sur des clips vidéos pour

analyser les performances collectives

et individuelles. Et de leur côté, les

joueurs utilisent également cet outil pour

décortiquer leurs prestations et étudier

le style de jeu et les spécificités de

chacun de leurs adversaires.

What else? Le hockey a été l’un

des précurseurs de l’analyse vidéo dans

les sports collectifs avec le football

américain et le rugby. Si, aujourd’hui, les

clubs de football disposent également de

leur propre analyste, c’était encore loin

d’être le cas il y a cinq ans !

Il n’y a pas que les pays européens qui sont présents à Brasschaat. Les frontières des pays participant à cette Hockey World League dépassent de loin le continent européen et s’étendent de la Mer de Chine jusqu’à la Mer de Tasman (Pacifique Sud). Quinze pays différents sont en lice, parmi lesquels des pays “plus exotiques” comme la Malaisie, le Pakistan, la Nouvelle-Zélande et la Corée.

Voilà qui nous vaut donc un agrégat de langues sur le terrain et en dehors, comme le polonais, l’urdu, le mandarin ou encore le coréen. Dans les tribunes, on peut apercevoir un supporter déguisé en coq français, fou de joie après la victoire des Bleus. Dans la salle de presse, le journaliste indien V. Krishnaswamy et son collègue Abhiji Das, côtoient le photographe néo-zélandais Neville Dawson, la journaliste italienne Carla Cotelli et bien d’autres. Il y a même une bénévole venue tout droit des Etats-Unis !

Cette diversité des langues mène parfois aussi à des situations amusantes dans la mixed zone, le lieu où les journalistes et les joueurs se retrouvent après les rencontres. Mardi soir, notre reporter Fleur Van de Kieft a interviewé la joueuse japonaise Okaiwa Shihori, qui ne maîtrisait pas vraiment l’anglais… On a failli faire venir un traducteur de Tokyo pour faciliter la conversation ! COUNTRY HONOURED : CHINELe nouvel empire du hockey ?

Si le hockey est déjà plus que centenaire sur le Vieux Continent, ce n’est que dans le courant

des années 70 que la discipline a été, petit à petit, introduite en Chine. Mais il a encore

fallu attendre près d’une vingtaine d’années avant que le pays ne commence à disposer

de terrains adéquats pour commencer, enfin, le véritable développement du sport. Avant

cela, les hockeyeurs ne disposaient que… d’un seul terrain artificiel dans l’ensemble du

territoire. En 1975, quatre coachs étaient envoyés au Pakistan pour effectuer une première

tournée d’observation. L’été suivant, le sport se développait enfin dans la région de Pékin

et dans la province d’Heilongjiang. Et si l’équipe dames est parvenue, à force de travail, à

se hisser dans le top 10 mondial, les messieurs en revanche peinent à se faire une place

au soleil. Auparavant, la plupart des joueurs chinois étaient originaires de Mongolie où les

habitants pratiquaient le Boikoo tarkbei appelé aussi Daur hockey (une discipline pratiquée

avec un noyau d’abricot et des bâtons en bois). La nation est incontestablement la grande

inconnue de ce tournoi à Anvers

même si, lors du tour précédent,

en Afrique du Sud, elle a démontré

qu’elle était en progrès constant. Il

s’agit en tous les cas d’un nouveau

marché considérable pour la FIH qui

en a fait une de ses priorités pour son

développement avec le Bengladesh.

• La double championne olympique

Madonna Blyth deviendra aujourd’hui

la joueuse la plus capée de l’histoire

du hockey féminin australien, lors

de la rencontre contre la Nouvelle-

Zélande. Elle jouera son 304e match

pour les Hockeyroos et battra ainsi

le record de Nikki Hudson (303).

Blyth est une joueuse influente en

Australie. Capitaine depuis 2009, elle

a hissé l’équipe de la 7e à la 2e place !

Videoanalyses, essentieel in het moderne hockeyAls er één aspect de voorbije tien jaar

een doorslaggevende rol is gaan spelen

in het moderne hockey, dan is dat wel de

videoanalyse. Dankzij een nauwkeurige

analyse kan de trainersstaf de tactische

prestaties van het team op het veld

verbeteren, maar ook de zwakke punten

en de openingen in de opstelling van de

tegenstander ontdekken. Begin jaren

2000 gebeurde de analyse nog met

videocassettes. Maar door de technische

vooruitgang en evolutie van camera’s,

software en computers kunnen coaches

voortaan nauwkeuriger werken en de

gegevens haarfijn interpreteren.

De beelden worden tegenwoordig

meteen tijdens de wedstrijd gecodeerd

en strafcorners of spelfases zijn al

na enkele seconden te bekijken. De

trainersstaf zit tientallen uren per week

voor het scherm om beeldfragmenten te

bekijken en de prestaties van het team en

van afzonderlijke spelers te analyseren.

En ook de spelers maken hier gebruik

van om hun prestaties te ontleden en

de spelstijl en specifieke kenmerken van

hun tegenstanders te bestuderen.

What else? Bij de teamsporten speelt

hockey samen met American football en

rugby een voortrekkersrol op het vlak van

videoanalyses. Voetbalclubs beschikken

intussen ook over analisten, maar vijf jaar

geleden was daar nog geen sprake van!

Het zijn niet enkel Europese landen die hun opwachting maken op de Brasschaatse velden. De grenzen van de landen in deze Hockey World League overschrijden moeiteloos het Europese continent en lopen via de Zuid Chinese Zee helemaal door tot aan de Tasmaanse Zee. 15 verschillende landen komen hier in actie, waaronder exoten als Maleisië, Pakistan, Nieuw-Zeeland en Korea.

Hierdoor kunnen we een mikmak aan talen zoals Pools, Mandarijn, Urdu en Koreaans onderscheiden op en naast het veld. In de tribunes zien we een man verkleed als Franse haan kraaien van plezier na een overwinning van Les Bleus. In de perszaal botsen we dan weer op de vriendelijke Indische journalist V. Krishnaswamy en producer Abhijit Das, de Italiaanse journaliste Carla Cotelli en de Nieuw-Zeelandse fotograaf Neville Dawson. Er loopt zelfs een Amerikaanse vrijwilligster rond op de venue!

De diversiteit aan talen leidt ook tot een hilarisch tafereel in de mixed zone, waar spelers en journalisten elkaar ontmoeten na de wedstrijden. Dinsdagavond vond een opvallend interview van onze Fleur Van de Kieft met de Japanse speelster Okaiwa Shihori plaats. De Japanse bleek het Engels niet machtig waardoor het gesprek niet zo vlot verliep en we bijna een Japanse vertaler moesten laten overvliegen uit Tokyo. Gelukkig loopt alles steeds goed af en kunnen we hier alleen maar blij zijn met de mondiale diversiteit in het hockey!

COUNTRY HONOURED : CHINAHet nieuwe hockeytijdperk ?

Hoewel hockey in Europa al meer dan honderd jaar bestaat, werd de sport pas in de jaren

1970 mondjesmaat geïntroduceerd in China. Toch duurde het nog bijna twintig jaar voor

het land beschikte over geschikte hockeyterreinen. Pas vanaf dat moment kon de sport

zich verder ontwikkelen. Daarvoor was er in het hele land maar één kunstgrasveld waar

hockeyspelers terecht konden. In 1975 werden vier coaches naar Pakistan gestuurd voor

een eerste observatieronde. De volgende zomer won de sport al aan populariteit in de streek

rond Peking en in de provincie Heilongjiang. Hoewel de damesploeg zich ondertussen een

weg naar de top tien van de wereld geknokt heeft, krijgt de herenploeg het heel wat harder

te verduren. Vroeger kwamen de meeste Chinese hockeyspelers uit Mongolië, waar de

inwoners Boikoo tarkbei of Daur hockey spelen (in deze discipline maken ze gebruik van

een abrikozenpit en houten stokken). China is ongetwijfeld de grootste verrassing van dit

toernooi in Antwerpen, ook al heeft

het land tijdens het vorige evenement

in Zuid-Afrika bewezen dat de spelers

steeds meer vooruitgang boeken.

Deze markt biedt in elk geval heel

wat nieuwe mogelijkheden voor

de FIH, die voorrang geeft aan de

ontwikkeling van het Chinese en

Bengaalse hockey.

• Tweevoudig Olympisch kampioen Madonna Blyth zal een record vestigen als Australische hock-eyspeelster met de meeste caps tijdens haar wedstrijd tegen Nieuw-Zeeland. Ze zal haar 304de wedstrijd voor de Hockeyroos spelen en zo het record van Nikki Hudson (303) doen sneuvelen. Blyth is een invloedrijke leidster in het Australisch hockey en heeft als kapitein, sinds 2009, de ploeg van de 7de naar de 2de plaats geloodst.

• De speler van Groot-Brittannië, David Ames, wordt vandaag 26 jaar. Proficiat David !

• Vanavond om 20 uur treffen de Australische dames Nieuw-Zeeland in een grote Tasmaanse clash. De wedstrijd tussen de buurlanden is een confrontatie op topniveau. Australië is nummer twee van de wereld en Nieuw Zeeland nummer vier. De Australiërs lieten al verstaan dat ze beter moeten spelen dan gisteren om hun Nieuw-Zeelandse rivaal te kunnen verslaan.

• Vandaag zal de Maleisiër Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin zijn 200ste wedstrijd voor de nationale ploeg spelen. Ook de Koreaanse Kim Jong Eun zal voor de 200ste keer de kleuren van haar land verdedigen.
