OPPC Golf Outing

United for Syria

It was the 8th annual golf outing for “The Prayer Center of Orland Park” (OPPC), on September 29, 2012. It was a beautiful day for golfing. With the sun shining and having a great weather made it enjoyable time for all the golfers. Everyone entered in with a smile at Silver Lake Country Club. The programs started at 11:30 a.m. with a great welcome from staffs of The Prayer Center of Orland Park by Badie Ali, Mohammed Nofal and Sulei-man Ramadan. As golfers gathered, signed in, warm up with middle-eastern treats and goody bags. All golfers settled in their gears and team up in pairs of 4, to begin their 18 hole.

After a long wonderful day of golf-ing and fun in the sun, the golfers went to the club banquet around 5p.m. for their dinner. But before dinner, there was prayer, salat al- asr, started by Badie. Everyone gathered in the banquet and prayed together. After the sala was over, the attendees were seated, served with great meal and sharing their great moment in the field. During the dinner, Mo-hammed Nofal spoke a few words about the Prayer Center of Orland Park’s Golf Outing and getting our community together in fun activi-ties, and at the same time build a community to support towards the OPPC and The Quran Academy Project. The end of the event there was an-nouncement of rewards, raffles, and live action. This event was to support and raise the money to renovate the Prayer Center of Orland Park dome. All thanks to many sponsors and the community in helping to build OPPC and make it better for all Muslim.

By American Muslims for Palestine

Unity and solidarity were the key themes prevalent throughout an outdoor educational event, host-ed by the American Muslims for Pal-estine on Sept. 29 near the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, IL. The event was developed to raise aware-ness of the Syrian people’s struggle for liberty from the tyrannical regime of President Bashar Al-Assad as well as to raise money for the hundreds

of thousands of Syrians who’ve be-come refugees from the 18 months of fighting. After speeches by community lead-ers representing the Syrian Ameri-can Council, the Syrian American Society, and the Syrian American Medical Society, as well as many others, a panel discussion put the struggle into historical, political and religious context. Sheikh Jamal Said, imam and director of the Mosque Foundation; Safaa Zarzour, secre-tary general of the Islamic Society of

North America; and Dr. Hatem Ba-zian, AMP chairman and Berkeley professor, were the panel speakers. “AMP hosted this event primarily because, in the words of Martin Lu-ther King Jr., injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” said Awad Hamdan, AMP national pro-grams director. “AMP stands for the American values of liberty, self-de-termination and justice, not just for Palestinians but for all people.”Dr. Zaher Sahloul, chairman of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago also made remarks. Other speakers included Fadi Sa-houri, AMP-Chicago chairman; not-ed Syrian author and immunologist Dr. Bara Sarraj; Dr. Moutez Sunbulli; and Mohamad Ammora of the Mus-lim American Society. Sheikh Has-san Ali of Mecca Mosque opened the event with Qur’an recitation. The Mosque Foundation’s Sheikh Kifah Mustafa conducted fundraising on behalf of certified charity the Zakat.

Women in POWER

Walk in Faith, NOT IN FEAR October 20, 2012 marked the 5th Annual Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer “Walk in Faith Not in Fear,” established by Arab Ameri-can Family Services. This year’s walk took place at Stagg High School, not its usual Lake Katherine destination, and resulted in a turnout of seventy-five people. This walk is dedicated to spreading awareness about the harmful effects of domestic violence, as well as, the emotional and physical ailments that breast cancer victims undergo during diagnosis and treat-ment. Furthermore, the foundation of this cause is to let people know

The Arab-American Democratic Club (AADC) by Randa Mahmud

hosted “Women in Power: Elected Officials and How to Get There” to pro-mote women in politics.  Guests of the October 11, 2012 event included IL State Senator Iris Martinez, IL State Representative Toni Berrios and State Representative-Nominee Silvana Tabares.  The guests addressed the AADC and attendees of their personal backgrounds, what their positions are in of-fice, challenges women in power face and how the Arab American Commu-nity could get more involved.

Among the many topics, the guests discussed how and why they ran and continue to run for their office.  Attendees also had to opportunity to ask questions and participate in a discussion with the guests.  Top-ics included barriers in their career, opinions about proposed bills, and what the Arab American commu-nity can do to stay involved.

they are not alone; there is help, and the Arab community is not immune to these issues. Fatimah Hishmeh, Casework Man-ager of the Domestic Violence De-partment said in her speech, “Do-mestic Violence impacts everyone from neighbor to child. The key is to acknowledge this impact and take the steps to help in solving the issue. Don’t turn a blind eye to the prob-lems. Instead, open your eyes to the solutions.” This year’s walk showed the activ-ism from the youth within our com-munity. The faces of young adoles-

cents took up spaces in the bleachers as the events of the Walk took place. “To see the youth coming out and dedicating their time to acquire the knowledge that is often hushed due to cultural influences, gives us the reassurance that spreading aware-ness about domestic violence and breast cancer is reaching all corners of our community,” said Hishmeh. Eman Samra, a senior at Reavis High School, said, “This is a great cause be-cause it shows people who are going through these things and that there’s help and AAFS is a place they can go to seek it.”
