world-class yoga in Jumeirah

stanley norris has an international reputation as a yoga instructor – and indeed, as an innovator of the discipline itself. in january 2009, he set up ‘open air yoga’ in safa park, attracting an extremely loyal following at 10am every Friday morning. the park session blends hatha yoga with acro yoga – and, as he says himself, it isn’t for the faint-hearted! although he warmly welcomes beginners, stanley says that you’re going to need fairly good core strength, probably already have an existing fitness regime, and a good level of body awareness.

stanley has been a student of hatha yoga for more than 10 years, and along with three years’ study of ayengar yoga, has also been a martial arts exponent for the last 4 years. stanley requests an aed50 donation- which he passes straight to charity! gate 2 entrance, Friday, 9-45am.

pull yourself together says manchester clinic!

pull yourself together! that's the watchword of manchester Clinic jumeirah, with a new Basic and advanced training seminar, which explains the key solutions offered by integrated dynamics, diet and determination solutions (piddds). the seminar aims to create a state of united body and mind, with bones technically aligned, and a fully personalized diet. however, as good as this may sound, it's all dependent on the correct positioning of the spine. this is where piddds comes in.

if you are 'connected' in terms of right bone alignment - not necessarily your social status! - the bone marrow makes enough blood cells, constituting the right blood volume, accounting for good blood circulation which, through the spine, feeds all the major body organs. the programme will equip you to get properly connected! clUbs

e-waste community lecture

the emirates environmental group (eeg) is currently hosting a series of lectures on key recycling, conservation and ecological themes. For the second lecture, at the emarat atrium on February 22nd, the principle topic was e-waste recycling – a subject that which the united nations environmental Forum regards as one of the five most major environmental threats of the coming decade. the lecture, presented by mr. ahmad shadid, proved a great success, giving a tremendously clear introduction to the topic and highlighting some innovative and cost-effective ways forward – for both the local and international communities. the key challenges include -• the fact that e-wastes are

now the fastest-growing segment in the global waste stream

• it’s such a serious concern that only the integrated response of government, manufacturer and consumer will curb the risks

• recycling is now an industry in its own right – and must set exemplary standards for world business

• the recognition of the problem by each and every one of us.

if we each make changes at home, those small steps will create a huge impact in the community as a whole

as well as the main lecture, the evening highlighted some of the eeg’s other work and initiatives - for example, the all-new environmental drawing Competition, which is open to all government and private schools in the uae. there’s also a brilliant teachers’ workshop called ‘sustainable Cities; healthy life’, which will be finalised by the end of march and which includes a wide selection of modules and workshops – all conducted in both arabic and english.

magrudy’s rip…

we're saddened to report on the apparent demise of magrudy's - an old neighbourhood friend who's profile is rapidly diminishing! after magrudy’s recent move to shut two of its eminent branches at deira City Centre and dubai mall, the company has now put the locks on all of its spinneys outlets, mercato being one of them. the reason? ‘Continuing rent increase’ is the factor given for the regrettable shutdowns. hypersun awaits comment on closure of the spinney’s stores in particular – watch this space for further updates.

new mall on the block

will the agora be able to deliver or stand up to the likes of mercato? only time will tell.. located in the heart of jumeirah the agora will boast some of the best retail brands in fashion, jewellery, home furnishings, electronics, sports, etc. the mall will also feature a spa, a sport & fitness centre amongst several other amenities. the agora will be the first to deliver on the concept of the ‘personal shopper’ service, where agora’s skilful, dedicated and highly experienced personal shoppers will inspire, search and source to fulfill all your shopping desires. this is obviously a real plus and differentiates the agora offer from the rest - offering a truly bespoke shopping experience.

municipal vehicles gogreen

the uae is leading the way in the rapid conversion of public sector vehicles to eco-friendly lpg gas – and here in dubai, jumeirah’s municipal vehicles will be among the first to run greener and cleaner. the switch-over process was officlally heralded by a launch ceremony at the dm transportation department Building, on February 22nd, attended by the executive councils responsible for ensuring a glitch-free transformation.

lpg gas conversion is a remarkably quick and simple process. Conversions allow the vehicle to run on either petrol or lpg, selected at the touch of a switch.

native australian emma riedel is a children’s events

specialist. mompreneur emma, has been a resident of jumeirah for the last six years – her company is uae licensed and based in dubai.

For emma, attention to quality, integrity and detail is everything. “i started my own company, me&riley Contemporary events, two years ago. the company is named after my first-born son – riley. we specialize

at organizing children’s events such as birthdays, holiday parties, nursery activities and play dates. as a mother of 3 young children, it can get very hectic especially when you are putting in 80 hours of work per week. But i wouldn’t

have it any other way”, says emma. “i choose to work because i want to and i refuse to be a stay at home mom”.

equipped with a degree in interior design and prior experience at a fashion house, emma believes in customizing and designing every event with a creative and unique twist. emma continues, “ideally i would need a brief from the client 2 months in advance. From party invitations to customizing piñatas, we do them all. Quality is key. For example, we never compromise on quality. people generally avoid doing piñatas at birthdays because the quality of candy used is appalling. But we customize our piñatas and fill them up with good quality sweets. we don’t do nuts, chocolates or unbranded candy. our products are sourced from countries like the united states, the united kingdom and australia”.

in the words of one of emma’s jumeirah clients, “emma’s parties are fun, trendy and conscious”.

Emma talks about “Going Organic”

“i’m not a fan of plastic. we try to avoid plastic products wherever possible and instead use products made from fabric, wood and paper”, says emma. she adds, “even our balloons are made from biodegradable latex”.

Putting the child first “i don’t like to do cartoon

character themes”, says emma. emma firmly believes “it is all about celebrating a child’s birthday and not some cartoon/fictional character’s birthday”.

in other words, it’s crucial to understand the child and what truly inspires him or her.

“we offer our clients a range of exciting, colourful and fun-filled activities to choose from. some of our activities include t-shirt designing, canvas painting, hand puppet making, jewellery making and so on. we design games/activities to keep the children engaged at all

times and allow them to get in touch with their creative side. recently on request of one of my clients for a barn-animal themed birthday party, we had 20 barn animals brought in. the kids just couldn’t get enough and were left squealing with joy.”

emma describes her parties as “stylish, sophisticated and special, yet simple, all at the same time.”

emma is currently working

on her plans for expansion of the company, in australia. the work and effort emma puts in is hard and tedious but well worth the adorable smiles of her young clientele.

Emma’s parties always – • put the child and his/her

interests first – not an artificial commercial theme

• use high-quality, bespoke

furnishings and fabrics• Create a beautifully-

integrated occasion where coordination, colour themes and narrative unite.

• listen to what parents want and take a detailed written brief and budget projection.

andrea Broccalook now before you miss him!! young and very talented fashion designer andrea Brocca is light years ahead of his time.

the year 10 student from jumeirah College has achieved a lot for his age (14 years), not just locally but internationally too. andrea came in 3rd place while competing against other designers much older than himself for the coveted and prestigeous title of Fashion

illustrator 2010. andrea has also had the glorious opportunity of interning with high fashion uk brand ‘ temperly london’ during the summer of 2010 and is presently looking forward to a sequel experience with the fashion house this summer, returning to london.

First time around, andrea designed a dress that was named after him and called ‘the andrea dress’. the dress hit stores in december last year and has sold 90 pieces already.

all we can say is wow! this budding talent is definitely someone to watch out for.

Bear in mind that andrea is younger than yves saint laurent when he apprenticed with pierre Cardin and younger still than hubert givenchy when he apprenticed with Charles worth. not to mention dior, who didn't start until he was age 16. how long until the paris catwalk?

gems world academy takes it all!!the gwa girls' soccer team have done it this time. having won only one match last season, the girl’s from gwa have definitely stepped up their game and turned things around for themselves this season by finishing with 10 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses and 1 big Championship. not bad for a team that won only 1 game last year! Congratulations girls!!

it’s green month at Jcjumeirah College has dedicated the month to educating children about the whole raft of important environmental issues. the occasion deals with everything from animal conservation to recycling to a sponsored ‘green walk’ for the world wide earth hour. For jC’s pupils, the month involves a series of ‘signpost’ days –

with competitions between houses and pupils to see how successfully the ‘go green’ message really got across! For example, there’s an inter-house recycling challenge, and – very innovative, this one – a ‘lights off’ day, when the idea is ensure minimal use of iwBs and photocopiers.

a green inter-house fashion show – involving all houses – on 1st march looks set to grab the headlines, and will feature a wide variety of recycled and eco-friendly fashion items. throughout the month, the school is on 'green alert' proactively encouraging kids and parents to conserve energy, whether at home or in the car.

squealing with Joy the British orchard nursery on street 6B, recently organized a fun-filled field trip to the dubai dolphinarium. anticipation and excitement were the emotions of the hour. the dolphins and seals put up a fantastic show, which was a valuable and enjoyable experience for the children. the aquatic animals charmed their way into the

hearts of the children by performing somersaults and jumping through hoops. the kids just couldn’t get enough and were left squealing with joy. the trip was a treat for the kids and the nursery is still echoing with stories from the Creek park.

has your school recently arranged a similar trip? or maybe an excursion to the mountains? or a fantastic and picturesque desert safari, perhaps? if so, we’d like to hear – and if you have some good photography of the occasion, it will be our pleasure to reproduce that, too. do let us know asap: contact [email protected]

the shakespeare & Co concept is a simple one: open long,

long hours (from 7am – 1am) and serve familiar european dishes in a pleasant setting. there’s probably no other restaurant in dubai that attracts such a diverse clientele: it’s as popular with emiratis as it is with Brits and australians, as well-frequented by mena visitors as it is by affluent singaporeans and americans. the restaurant also follows the henry hilton adage that only three things matter – location, location and location.

it’s at one end of the charming and pristine mini-mall called the village, and a stone’s throw from the beach, dubai marine and the palm strip. if you want to know where the guys who parade their customized motorbikes stop and eat, or where the owners of some of the most delectable sports cars in the world have their lunch, look no further: it’s here.

And now the food…speaking personally, this

reviewer is a regular here for the english breakfast, which

is conveniently served all day. For aed 45, you get a superb, three-egg omelette, a scattering of mushrooms, a sausage, basket of toast and an orange juice. But the menu has about twenty more sophisticated options, from penne, tagliateele and spaghetti with a variety of sauces, through to steaks, club sandwiches and soups. what’s more, none of it is especially pricey, and a family can have a genuinely quite glamorous meal out for under aed500. there's a special kids menu, too, and again, the prices are good.

let’s concentrate on the all-day breakfast, though. today, the omelette is as good as ever, but the toast is virtually cold and the sausage is lamentably under-cooked. when i complain, i’m met by a look of incredulous surprise and it takes nearly 20 minutes to get a hotter meal back. sure, i’m here at 3pm on a Friday – and there are probably 60 other customers. But the reality is that many of the waiting staff are simply unfamiliar with the style of food i’m ordering, and have little idea how to brown toast, for example. this isn’t the first time i’ve experienced service like this here, but i always try to shrug it off – because the fact is that i like it here, and i’m just as likely to get served by the manager (who knows my order off by heart and is brilliant), as i am by an inexperienced team member who started yesterday.

the one thing i can always rely on here is lots of ambience. whether i come here by myself, for a romantic evening, or with valued business clients, there’s a great conviviality - and frankly, the bill always makes me feel i’ve got something of a bargain. But come on, can we train the waiter about toast, please?
