Borneo aka north pole

have you heard about Jumeirah resident maria Conceicao, the intrepid adventurer who is selflessly raising money for the maria Christina Foundation? well, in April she’ll be heading to the north pole – on skis! All to raise money for the ms scholarship program run by her foundation. The program will place six gifted children from Bangladesh - aged from 12 to 15 – in top-quality schools in Dubai and support them for the duration of their secondary education. now, she’s undergoing tough training in preparation for the arduous trek to the north pole. so if you see a lady dragging two massive rubber tyres along Beach road, it's maria working out! maria will depart from a russian ice station perversely called ‘Borneo’! During the two-week adventure, she’ll be at risk from polar bears, frostbite and hyporhermia. But she's used to a tough challenge. Good luck maria!

muddy waters

we've noticed what appears to be untreated sewage flowing into the sea adjacent to Jumeirah Fishing Village. The sewage pipe – which looks to be linked to the households and businesses around mercato – is clearly visible at low tide, and only projects some 10 metres into the sea. Doesn’t this mean that swimmers are in effect swimming in polluted effluent? Given the location of the pipe – immediately next to to the right-hand bay line of the fishing village, as you walk with mercato on your left – it would seem that the fishing fleet is actually operating in water that may be contaminated with sewage. we welcome your comments on this; it’s an uncharacteristic feature of what is otherwise a fairly pristine shore – and it impacts beaches that are open to families and young children. There should be at least a 200 metres-long exit out to sea, with the pipe in good condition. need we say more?

take a seat

There’s a new promotion featuring benches. yes, benches – a great place to relax, chat, and perhaps make influential new friends. The promotion celebrates the stories told, lives lived and moments shared on benches. This year Jumeirah brand s*uce urges you to Find a bench. Fall in love.

s*uce has initiated this project with an aim to increase the number of benches in the community, in and around the city.

each bench is a piece of art, beautifully crafted and shaped by artists, designers and architects from around the middle east. every piece is also very useful too! The benches will be displayed at Art Dubai, after which they will be placed in several communities during march and April.

so keep an eye out for those customised “pop-up” benches - and go on, make them a part of your story.

welcome to this week’s edition of hypersun Jumeirah. I think you’ll particularly enjoy our ‘shout Out Loud’ section this week, because we chose a selection of neighbourhood ‘characters’ – familiar faces whom you may have seen around – and asked them about their jobs, lifestyles and how they feel about the community. I especially like the way that almost none of them have ended up doing the jobs they were originally trained to do – but seem to have found new and interesting ways forward nonetheless. meanwhile, you'll find lots more local news and events listed here in this issue of hypersun. If there’s a topic that you want to discuss, please contact me on [email protected] and I’ll make sure to answer you personally.

with the recent horrifying news of lives lost in Jumeirah's seas, the question is ‘how do we learn to surf safely and correctly’? hypersun sent Community Journalist Lakshmi Kewalramani to find out. “The fatalities happened only a day before my first ever surf lesson, which was to take place on sunset beach. my initial reaction was to back-out of my commitment. But I was really looking forward to my lesson. so I decided that I would go to the beach and if it did not feel right, I would not participate.

"The next day, I expressed my concerns to Carl, the owner of surf school uAe, and he assured me that my life was in safe hands.

"mohammed, my surf instructor walked me through the basics of surfing. he also explained why people had drowned the previous day and what precautions I ought to take if I was caught in a rip.

"After a quick warm-up, I was leashed to the board. The time had now come. I made several appalling attempts to stand up on the board and failed miserably each time. I did almost manage to stand up half way. Oh! who am I kidding? But the great thing about it all was that I wasn’t scared anymore. so now, I'm planning my second lesson this weekend. see ya at sunset!!”

dubai's tai chi master

Tai Chi Chuan – usually just called Tai Chi – is an ancient Chinese philosophy which predates martial arts such as kung fu, and which aims to create a sense of harmony both within the body and in our relationship with the immediate surroundings and environment. This process is all about balancing what practitioners call the ‘chi’ –and no-one knows this better than local practitioner Angela Abou Alwan. she leads an innovative tai chi session on Jumeirah Beach every sunday and wednesday, with two classes, beginners and advanced. The first group - classes start at 6-30pm - involves a 24-step ‘yang style’ programme, with the more advanced session (from 7-30pm) kicking things up a notch to a 48-step session. Attune your chi!ng

wellness Day (sat 5th) at Dubai Ladies Club attracted more than 1500 ladies from across Dubai - all taking part in a

variety of fitness and health-related activities. The Open Day was organised to celebrate International women’s Day, drawing attention to women’s health and its importance for a productive and happy life. The day comprised events like indoor and outdoor fitness classes and an extraordinary wellness walk, which offered free consultations with doctors and pharmacists as the first step towards early detection and disease prevention (and for wellness walkers, there were also a variety of tasty gourmet snacks on offer!).

As part of the Open Day, Dubai health Authority provided over six different medical check-ups which also included all-important advice or early breast cancer screening and detection. They also introduced their new initiative, ‘Community health Awareness’ - a programme that aims to educate residents about being prepared for community emergencies, explaining how to respond to medical emergencies affecting yourself, your family or neighbours.

Iranian hospital to the rescue! with the rapid pace of development in and around Dubai, it goes without saying that the needs of the community for convenient, trustworthy and top-quality healthcare have also increased.

To keep up with these growing needs, Iranian hospital is extending its facilities to a brand new three-storey building on Al wasl road.

Built on a plot of 62,000 sq metres, the new building is situated just next to the old hospital block. It's well equipped with round the clock pathology, pharmacy, imaging and radiology - and has 200 beds.

ShOUT OUT LOUd jUMEIrAh!every week, we’ll be asking four Jumeirah people - perhaps you see them around the community - for their views on the neighbourhood, their lifestyles , or key current issues. see what you think of their replies.

timinet tarekign27, sudanese, waitress, single

how long have you been working in dubai?I’ve been working at my current job for 4 years now. I joined the company when it first started. my colleagues are like family now and I am very close to each and every one of them. It’s been great to see the team build and for us all to grow together.

Looking at your present employment, did you always intend to do this job?I essentially came to Dubai 5 years ago with the hope of getting my big break in the airline business. I’ve always wanted to become an airhostess and travel the world. And after my friends told me stories about their lives in Jumeirah, I decided to give Dubai a chance. But I never really gave my dream, of becoming an airhostess, a shot. In fact when I first came to Dubai, I worked at the Ibn Battuta food court for a restaurant that serves Indian and Arabic cuisines.

what do you and don’t you like about your job? This is my family away from home. my timings are great and

my job allows me enough time to pamper myself at the salon or even visit the mall. when I worked at the Ibn Battuta food court, I had a straight 12 hour shift, in addition it used to take me 4 hours to travel back and forth to work. so all in all, this meant I was out of the house for 16 hours straight. I stay in Deira, so it felt like I was traveling between the 2 poles of Dubai everyday. I’m glad to say there is absolutely nothing that I don’t like about my job.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?I love working in Jumeirah. I like to see the different kind of people here. It is nice to see how open-minded they are compared to places like Deira, Bur-Dubai, etc. There is a definite difference – and a real style of Jumeirah person.

do you feel part of this community? It’s been 4 years now, and I do feel like I’m part of the community. Although I would like to travel to visit other places like Al-Ain, Ajman, ras Al Khaimah and so on. If not in the air perhaps on land then – since it seems I’m not destined to be part of the airline business! (smiles). The reality is that I'm happy as part of this present community, and any travel I can do is simply a bonus.

does your job support family members either here or at home?yes it does. I am the oldest child in my family. I have three younger brothers. One is in Greece and the other 2 are back in sudan.

sumesh k c 38, Indian, single, Driver

how long have you been working in dubai?I came to Dubai when I was only 5 years old. I’ve been living in the country for more than 30 years now. And I’ve lived in Jumeirah for the past 10 years.

Looking at your present employment, did you always intend to do this job?well, I don't mind it. Currently, I work for my brother-in-law’s contracting company. But I am also considering freelancing as a property broker. I get calls from people all the time about finding a villa to rent in and around Jumeirah. previously, I have also worked as a taxi driver for national Taxi for 9 years.

what do you or don’t you like about your job?my job gives me a lot of freedom. I get to meet people from all walks of life. And I cherish these opportunities because each person I meet has taught me something new. I like my job but I think I would do better as a real estate broker. when I was young my parents wanted me to become a

technician but I always insisted that I wanted to be a driver. working off-shore was also an option which I never explored but I wish I had at that time. Because my brother works off-shore and he enjoys a good compensation along with a great holiday package.

do you like living in this neighbourhood?I do like living in Jumeirah. I enjoy the freedom that this community offers. I like to go out to the beach, exercise and essentially have a great time. Jumeirah is excellent for these things - there's really no other part of Dubai that I would sooner live in. Jumeirah is very much a real community and you will find many different types of person here.

do you feel part of this community?I’ve lived in this community for quite sometime now and I practically know most of the residents in and around the area. And they know me well, too. so I would proudly say that I do feel like a part of this community. Also, being a driver, I feel that I'm performing a job and a service that people here in the community will really value - and this makes me feel that I fit in that much more.

does your job support family members either here or at home?no. In fact it is my family who supports me when I need help. Completely the other way around. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. All of them are well-settled in Dubai and I'm lucky in this respect.

aBduL hamid56, Indian, works at the open beach kiosk. married

how long have you been working in dubai?I have been working at the beach kiosk for 12 years now. when I first came to Dubai I worked as a cook for an Arab family here for 4 years. After which, I worked as a cook for the Department of police for 13 years. And I’m here now.

Looking at your present employment, did you always intend to do this job?I came to Dubai 28 years ago, because it allowed me the opportunity to earn three times as much money that I would have probably earned if I had worked in Chennai. I come from a very small village near Chennai, where farming is essentially the means to earn your meals. But growing up and even as a child I detested going to the fields with my father. I used to admire people who wore better clothes than I did and wanted the same for myself one day.

what do you or don’t you like about your job? There isn’t anything to hate or like about my job, I work because

I have to. I am responsible for the members of my family. my sole intention was and will always be to provide the best for my family. I did think of retiring once but my friends’ words talked me out of it.I like my job just fine. It allows me to take good care of my family and myself.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?I think that Jumeirah Open Beach is a nice place to work at. It can get quite hot during the summers though.

do you feel part of this community?not really. my kiosk caters to hundreds of people everyday and hence it is the kiosk that is essentially a prominent and vital part of the community in Jumeirah. so it’s the kiosk that belongs, not me! I do feel that I am part of this community, but like most places, it can take a while to feel at home.

does your job support family members either here or at home?It has to. I am the sole source of income for my wife and 4 kids. I have 2 boys and 2 girls. my eldest daughter is married and my 2 younger children are still schooling. I intend to bring my older son to Dubai. God willing, soon enough. my family moved back to India when I shifted jobs in Dubai because I could no longer afford to keep them here anymore. This is of course a difficult situation, but there really is nothing I can do, other than continue to work hard and at least I have a good job.

harsha khuBchandani25, Indian, Director of Flaming Trio (events company), single

how long have you been working in dubai?I have lived in Jumeirah for the past 6 years. But I have lived in Dubai all my life. I was actually born here. Before Jumeirah I lived in Bur Dubai for 10 years, but I have to say that Jumeirah is far more enjoyable as a place to live, with so many more desirableamenities.

Looking at your present employment, did you always intend to do this job?yes, I’ve always wanted to work in the events industry. And after spending a whole lot of time planning my brother’s and sister’s wedding, I felt that I had gathered enough confidence to give event planning a good shot. especially since my brother got married in phuket and this took real planning, my sister and I have teamed up together on this new venture, Flaming Trio.

what do you like or don’t you like about your job?The thing that I like most about my job is seeing the finished, end product. we put a lot of hard

work into designing an event and catering to a client’s needs and wants. so seeing how it finally all unravels is an exciting affair and something that makes all the late night stay-ups well worth it.I love my job but sometimes clients are very fickle. They change their minds all the time. It could be the colour of a sheet or the flowers. They can sometimes be very demanding too.

do you like living in this neighbourhood?I love Jumeirah. I feel it is centralized in a way that allows me easy access to the hotels, malls, theatres, beaches, and supermarkets in Dubai. I could not ask for more. Compare all this to living in a more closed residential community such as The meadows or The springs, where I wouldn't have so many options and there's a substantial journey to get where I want to go. The only thing I would say on the negative side is that the metro doesn't service the Beach road - I would love to use the metro (it's so neat and convenient), but it simply doesn't help me get around Jumeirah. you can't have everything, I guess!

do you feel part of this community?I do feel like I am a part of the Jumeirah community. It is my home.

does your job support family members either here or at home?no, I don’t have to support any of my family members. my parents and my siblings are well settled in Dubai.

An urban myth alleges that Dubai has more five-star and

super-luxury hotels than anywhere else on earth. This may or may not be true, but the likes of Burj Al Arab,

Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is one of that rare handful of

brands that seem to attract every type of Dubai resident. whatever branch you visit, you’ll find a mix of

Atlantis The palm, Kempinski and Al Qasr have all raised the bar in terms of sheer wealth of facilities and the sumptuous scale of offer. But while they may be full of wonders,

emiratis, British, Indian, pakistani, Filipino – every ethnicity you can think of, and all in equal measure. This is especially true for the branch on the corner of the Jumeirah

the reality is that you don’t always need to go to these lengths to have a great time. There are smaller and more modest hotels that are simply thoroughly enjoyable places to visit. A great example is the regent Beach hotel, located right on the Open Beach, immediately behind The Village mall. The hotel recently re-opened, having moved a few blocks down the road from its previous address, and while a 3-star, it offers a wide range of amenities. There’s wi-fi in every room, a business centre, men’s and ladies salons, a beautiful new swimming pool, outdoor terrace and small cosy bar with satellite TV. most of the facilities are open to visitors and guests alike, including the hotel restaurant, the Ali Baba. Quite well-known, it’s marketed almost as a separate entity and its windows look straight out onto the beach.

Centre, Beach road, where it seems the café’s concept really does offer something for everyone. I often come here for weekend breakfast – the salmon scramble can be delicious. But on his particular visit there’s a problem. The staff cooking my breakfast don’t tell the waiting staff when it’s ready and simply

what’s great about all this is that it’s unpretentious, reasonably-priced and the staff are great – friendly and well-trained. plus, the location lets you walk off a heavy lunch with a stroll on one of the nicest bits of the Open Beach. walking around the hotel it's a bit like walking around your own home. The regent Beach hotel is part of the ramee Group – and they can be justifiably proud of this simple, honest-to-goodness nice hotel. Call: (04) 344 5777

leave it on one side. It’s ‘discovered’ on the counter 10 minutes later – and served to me stone cold. not good. I’d like to recommend this place. I’ve been here countless times. It's in a great location, three minutes from the beach. But please, guys – tell the staff they have to communicate with each other…
