annual market day

after a successful event at star International school (near the police academy), Dubai Baby & Children's market is heading back to mirdif for its annual market day, and although it's scheduled for 27th may 2011, you'll need to register asap if you want to lease a stand. It takes place at uptown primary school in mirdif.

It's a regular market event where parents and parents-to-be buy and sell pre-loved baby and children's items. there's also a huge range of boutique and specialist products. It's a fun-packed event with lots of games and entertainment for the little ones; as well as a charity stall, for anyone interested in donating for a good cause.

exhibitors will be charged aeD150 to book a stall for turning pre-loved baby and children items into cash. Booking and managing the stall coundn't be simpler, and there's hands-on guidance. Call kim Jaffreson 050 889 2781.

food

made in india

tiffinbites is a new and popular London-based Indian restaurant - and the branch in mirdif City Centre is set to introduce innovative, brand new menus. you'll be able to savour the unique fusion food concept through an exciting range of dishes and desserts.

gm yogesh visht told hypersun that the new entries on the menu will include butter chicken, mixed 'plotta' chicken wings, and new beverages which will include highly original alcohol-free cocktails.

Inspired by the tiffin-wallah delivery boys of mumbai who would bring meals to hungry office workers in metallic tiffin dishes, tiffinbites is said to continue this heritage of offering simple, zesty, fresh food. there are wonderful starters, smokey kebab and classic finger-licking curries and challis. the cooking methods, food origins and ingredients are all from India.

electrifying

we report with delight that Dubai electricity and water authority (Dewa) is on the verge of testing and commissioning a power substation with capacity of 400/132 kv in mirdif, among other areas. this substation will be equipped with four 505 mega volt ampere transformers.

according to reports from Dewa, the substations will be in operation by the beginning of april, despatching the horror of our power woes here in mirdif to history. substations of this kind are amongst the most advanced and sophisticated in existence and deliver maximum power output in the most energy-efficient ways. the uae is also the only country in the mIddle east and gCC to use substations of this high calibre.

But, just for your information: Dewa is splashing a whopping aeD998 million for this project. please remember to clear your bills in time...!

24-hour pharmacy?

hypersun has become aware that there aren't any 24-hour pharmacies here in mirdif - at least not in any of the central shopping centres. this is a social issue, because the closest 24-hour pharmacy is as far away as al mullah plaza - which of course is a substantial journey.

the real problem here is that any journey time can be difficult, because - of course- you may need urgent treatment or medicine, and a long trip may well be unconfortable or impossible.so what do you do if your child wakes up with tummy ache or you get an excruciating toothache late at night? or if you simply run out of an important medication that you need for a chronic condition? well, the pharmacy that we found open the latest was Life pharmacy, located on street # 83 in mirdif, which stays open until 1:00am.

or you could waste your time driving around the neighbourhood in hopes of finding a pharmacy that is open 24 hours. you will just be wasting your precious time - instead of receiving vital treatment. we'd like to open a community blog on this one - contact us with your views and feelings on [email protected]

mIrdif is a growing community so let's ensure 24-hour care. ing

Fancy a rent-free year?

Following the launch of a Free rent Competition, Better homes the region's largest property consultancy, and Dubai properties group (Dpg), a member of Dubai holding, have witnessed an overwhelming response to their competition that offers one lucky uae resident the chance

to win a rent-free apartment at shorooq mirdif for a full year.

the Competition, which asked uae residents what they would do if they didn't have to pay rent, generated almost 1,000 responses from a variety of marketing channels; both Better homes and Dpg are delighted with the momentum the Competition has gained over the last three weeks.

"we knew the competition would be popular as the prize eliminates a major cost from people's month to month living expenses; however, we didn't expect such a plentiful variety of creative responses," said James gauduchon, head of marketing for Better homes.

readers will probably already be familiar with the shorooq development. It's a mix of studios, one and two bedroom apartments, and basically a community' within a community.

while not one of the highest-rental areas in Dubai, shorooq is a great place to live, and free rent here (or anywhere else for that matter!) is indeed a huge benefit.

testing new markets? try mirdif

In its bid to tap into international markets, Lakeland, the London-based home of creative kitchenware, tested the middle eastern market with a new store at mirdif City Centre.

In the second quarter of last year, the company partnered with uae's Jawad and opened up a 5,000 sq. feet store at mirdif City Centre, the first of it kind in the uae - and the company's first outside the united kingdom.

now, word reaching our desk is that the company is set to to open more stores in the uae, owing to the soaring demand and strong response generated by the mirdif store.

how long have you been working in dubai?I joined my current job almost one year ago in april 2010. when I first came to the middle east 5 years ago, I worked for a cake and patisserie shop in Doha for 2 years. then I moved back to the philippines to take care of my dad, who hasn’t been well. and now I’m back in Dubai. It’s good to be back in this part of the world, and I’m optimistic about a future here.

did you plan to be working here?ya sure, I like it here. this is very much the kind of work I had in mind – I don’t feel that I’ve been taken off-course at all.

what do you like about your job?I like the fact that I get to meet new people every day. It’s interesting and you learn a lot. I would like to start my own small business someday, where I would get to design beautiful shoes, bags and accessories. Drawing and sketching are 2 things that I absolutely love doing in my spare

time. I have a feeling that, given the chance, I could really make a success of my own business.there’s nothing really that I dislike about my job. although it would be great if I would get placed at one of the branches in sharjah, close to my house. I live with my cousin in sharjah.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?yes, mirdif is a nice neighbourhood to work in. I like the originality and tranquility that uptown offers. I feel that the people here in Dubai are flashier compared to the simple and grounded people of sharjah.

do you feel part of this community?not as yet, because it’s been only a year here. But I am quite friendly to the staff working at the other shops out here. no place/community in the world would occupy the same place in my heart as the philippines does. Ideally I would like to go back home. Don’t get me wrong I like Dubai too, but the philippines will always be my first love. Back home me and my friends used to organise garage sales. I sold stuff that I must have barely worn or used, at bargain prices. I have even given away a lot of my things to people affected by the typhoon in philippines. It’s important to give back.

does your job support family members either here or at home? I am the youngest amongst my 3 siblings and I support my entire family, who are back home in the philippines.

rosaLind wamariu26, kenyan, sales associate, restonic

how long have you been working in dubai?a little over four years. I’ve just joined my company recently. It’s been only two months. Before my current job as a sales executive, I worked at the rotana on sheikh zayed road as a hostess. I worked there for four years and then decided that I needed a change.

did you plan to be working here?yes I like it very much. Back home in kenya I did 2 diploma courses - one in marketing and the other in hospitality. sales is very similar to marketing. I get to meet and communicate with new people all the time. It’s fun!

what do you like about your job?I love the fact that I have fixed work timings. this really helps you plan and build your lifestyle. and I live just 5 minutes away, so that’s an added bonus. there isn’t a single thing that I dislike about this job. I really feel that I could work hard and progress here. It's a case of time will tell.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?mirdif has been my home for quite some time now. I live with my sister and her family. I want to move out but she won’t let me (laughs). mirdif is quite mellow compared to buzzing sheikh zayed road. It would be fun to explore and see a different style of neighbourhood, but I enjoy being here nonetheless.

do you feel part of this community?I have stayed in Dubai for almost 5 years now, and have lived in mirdif during the most of my stay. I do have friends here but my closest friends are back home in kenya. I will go back eventually. I’m saving up to start my own hardware business in kenya. my dad has a good deal of information about hardware and I think it would be a good venture to invest in. I fully realise this may be some time away in the future, but it's something to work towards. It takes a long time to feel part of a community, but I am feeling more at home here now.

does your job support family members either here or at home? no, touch wood, all my family members are well blessed with good jobs either back home or here in Dubai. my brother too lives in Dubai with his family. I came to Dubai to help my sister take care of her new born. I never came with the intention of staying back and working here. things have worked out differently from how I expected, but in a good way. I’m a person who just can’t sit idle, so I started working.

shieLa marie dauz34, Filipina, sales executive

how long have you been working in dubai?I’ve worked in this company for 8 years now.

did you plan to be working here?yes I did. when I was young, I lived a fast-paced life in the city. after 2 years of college, I had had enough of it and I just wanted to take a break. so I pleaded with my mom to allow me to come back home. we had a small farm in pozorrubio. I stayed in pozzorrubio and took care of our small snack shop & salon. I never went back to the city to complete my commerce degree. after 6 months I moved to Dubai. what I’m doing now suits me very well.

what do you like about your job?I like the fact that my management is quite understanding. It’s a good place to work.there isn’t anything that I dislike about my job. although I do wish that business would pick up once again, like it was a few years back. I don’t like how recession has taken its toll, but it's the same

for everyone. hopefully things will improve soon.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?yes, it is a very calm and decent neighbourhood. It would be good to try other areas, but really, this is good.

do you feel part of this community?I like mirdif but I miss my home. I haven’t visited the philippines in a long long time. It breaks me up to even think about it. But hopefully this year, I pray that I can manage a trip to my country. I try every year but expenses take a toll on my savings. I miss my mom a lot. she jokes that once I go back I won’t recognize the streets or even be able to find my way around the neighbourhood.

does your job support family members either here or at home? yes, it does. I have 2 sisters and a brother. one sister is well settled in the uk with her husband and 3 children. my brother goes to college back home in philippines. my mum grows vegetables on our farm but solely to feed the family and not for purpose of selling them commercially. the job that I do here can really help us a lot. I have to say that I really believe in karma -'what goes around comes around', and at the moment I'm working hard to make sure that I fulfil my obligations -and I believe that things can turn out well if I do. I'm particularly concerned about my sister back home, but at least I'm able to give her something that can make some differemce.

diLip s,40, nepalese, security guard

how long have you been working in dubai? It’s been only 2 months since I moved to Dubai and started working as a security guard. I have been to the middle east before. I worked in Qatar for 4 years, in a similar position as a security guard. I then moved back to nepal and worked as a technician in a lighting company there.

did you plan to be working here?yes. In nepal, we have agents who do everything for us. From finding us a job to actually putting us on the flight. however, they do it all for a very large fee! I paid a good sum of money back home to my agents. It was a little more than 1 lakh rupees (aeD 8000). It is very important to be careful with these agents. on the one hand, we’re aware that everything they say is a lie but they are your only source to getting a job abroad. there is no way to verify anything that they say because they are the ones who communicate with the company. It is only after we reach Dubai that we actually

get to speak to the company representatives. so it is basically the hope that makes us leap forth.

what do you like about your job?I’ve just started working so I’m still getting a feel for the place and the work.there’s nothing that I dislike about my job. although, I would like to see the sights in Dubai as I haven’t really had the chance to go out and see the city, yet.

do you like working in this neighbourhood?this is a nice peaceful neighbourhood, In my profession, that’s an important aspect. I like it here, it’s a good place to work.

do you feel part of this community?I feel like it is growing on me a little every day. I miss my family though, of course. But if I’m going to work away from home, this is a very good place to be based. I want to know it better here, for sure.

does your job support family members either here or at home? yes, that’s the reason I came. I have to support my wife and our 2 boys. I want to educate my children. they go to convent schools in nepal. Back in nepal, my wife takes care of our farm; we grow a wide variety of crops like wheat, maize, jowar, etc. Coming here gives me the opportunity to build our income and therefore build our family. this has always been my real priority and I'm making a start.

e ver since the Italian renaissaance 500 years ago,

town squares have been seen as fundamental to building a sense of community. napolean called st.

I first met antonio Carluccio in 1985, when he was manager

of terence Conran’s acclaimed London eatery, the neal street restaurant. subsequently the great

mark’s square, venice “the dining room of europe”, and other key squares around the world have all acquired an important status in helping their communities

man pioneered a radically new style of café, combining top class delicatessen with an eat-in high quality pasta bistro. he called this concept ‘Carluccio’s Café’ and after

knit together. here in uptown mirdif, the emphasis is the same: to create a public space that can be used for shopping, funfairs, festivals and markets. all of which is particularly appropriate, because the architectural theme of uptown is to create the ambience of a european shopping centre - and the large piazza adds to the feeling of walking around a long-established Continental town.

the piazza has already become the most important venue in the neighbourhood, and it’s used for a wide variety of events. For example, the first time I ever came to mirdif, the piazza was hosting a Christmas fair; then I returned to find one of the excellent series of Friday markets underway. given their opening time until 10pm, the markets provide a whole family day out.

supervising the opening of a chain of stores, he left the company, only to return recently as a consultant. the company’s franchise network includes six countries in the middle east, and there are three Carluccio’s Cafes in Dubai – including this one in mirdif City Centre. service was regrettably quite slow – with the waitress revealing that this was her first day and she really didn’t know what to do. Clearly - because she took my plate the second I was finished, leaving my friend feeling embarrassed that she was still eating (why do so many waiting staff in Dubai break this basic rule of etiquette?). worse, my pasta – which took ages to arrive – was served semi-cold, and while Italians love their pasta to be ‘al dente’ (slightly chewy), this was simply insufficiently cooked.

all this is a shame. the

But sadly, there are some issues here. Firstly, too many of the stores surrounding the piazza have closed down. they’ve become unsightly and no-one has attempted to tidy up the interiors, which show signs of speedy retail departures. then, the piazza itself is dirty in places, with discarded refuge blowing around. a shame – because this piazza could be the jewel in the community’s crown.

restaurant looks great, it’s beautifully clean and I love the location. my starter, Foccacia al Formaggio was excellent, and there's an invigorating choice of waters and fresh juices. But with this particular brand, you expect the main course and the service to be nothing short of brilliant - and the bill should seem incidental. yet sadly, this is a case of ‘must do better’.

the Piazzahypersun checks out the piazza, uptown mirdif, which has become the most popular public venue in the mirdif community

Behind the Brandhypersun visits carluccio's cafe in mirdif citycentre - the local representative of a prestigious brand. But does it shape up?
