Happy Fall Northmore Panthers!

The start of the school year was a tremendous success! Our students have been working diligently to learn all of the standards and lessons being taught to them in the classroom. They are doing a great job - but we need your help! Our teachers are sending home homework on a daily basis for students in all grade levels. Please check with your children daily to make sure that they have completed their homework and turned it into the teacher. Homework reinforces what has been taught in the class.

Attendance is something that is very important here at Northmore! Our students need to be “bottoms down” in their seats by 8:10 a.m. to be considered present and on time. We have had an increase in tardies over the past month, so we ask that you please have your children here on time. Remember, we open the front gate at 7:30 a.m. for early breakfast. Also, those students who are at school, on time each and every day earn a special treat at the end of the month! For the month of September, our students who were here on time each day earned a giant pixie stick!

During our SAC meeting on October 1, we discussed our School Improvement Plan goals for this year. Our first goal is to increase oral language, vocabulary, phonics, reading comprehension skills, and writing through the use of accountable talk. Our second goal is to use blended learning (technology) to help increase student achievement. By doing all of this, it is our hope to strengthen our school grade and earn a high “B”!

3rd - 5th grades tutorials will begin October 15, 2019 and will run until December 19, 2019. Permission slips have already been sent home to select students. We will also have a second and third phase of tutorial that will take place the second half of the year.

We want to thank all of our parents and community members for always supporting our students! We look forward to seeing you all at Report Card Night on November 14, 2019!

PreK at Northmore is rocking and rolling!! The children have learned classroom routines. We learned color words as we made shape collages, talked about the tragedy that took place 18 years ago in New York on September all while listening to a story about two friends going to School. Open house was a success we had over 70% of our parents to come out and take several materials home to work at home with their students. Books to help their students with print concept skills and build oral language. Alphabet sheet to help with letter recognition and sounds. We had a special surprise Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Gordon will be providing all PreK students with a backpack to carry their belongings to school.

Welcome to Kindergarten Corner! Wow, we have made it through the first couple weeks of school. Our students are well settled in. Routine and procedures are well on their way. The students have completed FLKRS testing, 1st Diagnostics in I-Ready for reading and they are still working on Sucessmaker for math placement. Our students have also completed their Unit 1 Math assessment and we are happy to say that they did very well. Way to go Kinder!

Once again we are asking for your support for our Box Tops for Education campaign. Last year we were able to raise almost $200.00 from our Box Top Collection. This year I would like to challenge us to raise $300.00.

Box Tops can be submitted at any time. Just turn them in to your teacher. I run two contests a year…the winning class will receive a donut party. Submissions for the 1st Contest must be turned in to Ms. Plisco by Friday, October 25th.

We are well into a great start to the new school year! We are working hard to become better readers, writers, and mathematicians. This is what we are working on…

Our current Ready Reading unit is using key details to retell a story.Students will

● Retell a story focusing on describing characters, settings, and major events in a story

Our current writing unit Small Moments: Writing with Focus, Detail, And DialogueStudents will

● View themselves as writers● Think of ideas for stories● Write true stories using pictures and

words with details● Revise and edit their writing

Our current math unit is addition and subtraction strategies. Students will use strategies to solve word problems and will practice fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

There is a field trip to the Kravis Center on October 28th.

We are using iReady in the classroom during reading. They have a 45 minute goal in each subject. iReady can also be used at home by going to www.mysdpbc.org. Please encourage your child to complete his or her homework each night and read for 20 minutes. Thank you for all you do! Mrs. Matthews, Mrs. Santiago, Ms. Stewart, Ms. Kazondovi, Mrs. Bond

Dear Second Grade Families,Our Sensational Second Grade students

have been training to be “EXPERT” Readers, Writers, Scientist and Mathematicians.

As expert readers our students are reading fiction text and learning to ask/answer questions about key details, determine the central message as well as describe how characters respond to major events and challenges in a story. Our expert readers are working diligently to meet their reading standards.

As expert writers our students are learning about the writing process (prewriting drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) as they dive into writing small moments. Our students are currently working on publishing their small moments as story book writers do.

As expert scientist our students are learning about the world around them and how they fit into that world. Our expert mathematicians are learning math strategies to help them solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems.

EXPERT Panther family please assist your EXPERT student by:

● Having your student read at least 20 minutes daily

● Practice sight words daily● Check your student’s homework,

ClassDojo and/or agenda daily● Reminding them to do their best always!!!

Fourth Grade Greetings Parents, Family and Friends!

The school year is going extremely well. We have completed our unit on Place Valve as well as Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers in Math. We have begun learning how to multiply a One Digit by a Multi-digit number. We are working really hard in both math and reading. In Reading, we are learning about Character Traits as well as reviewing Main Idea and applying it to Informational text.

We are asking that you please have your child complete their homework daily as well as read for about 45 minutes a night and practice their basic multiplication facts 0-9 daily as well. Lastly, we will be using the Class Dojo system and we would like for you to log on with the password that as given to you so that you will be able to follow your child’s progress throughout the day. We look forward to working with you this year.

Thanks,The 4th Grade TeamMs. Blanchard, Mrs. Dawson,Mrs. Laurore, Ms. Scott, Mrs. Self

Third grade will be attending the play Judy Moody and Stink at the Kravis Center this month. We are very excited to have this opportunity. We are also looking forward to future trips to the Manatee Observation Center and Lego Land.

The Safety Patrols are on their posts. You may have seen them around the campus helping our students safely transition during arrival and dismissal. We have a super bunch of students who are really showing off their leadership skills. If you see a patrol doing a great job, please tell them! The sponsors will be meeting with parents and patrols soon to discuss this year’s trip to Washington, D.C. as well as, fundraising opportunities for the trip.

From Ms. Ratliff and Ms. Carter…In Math, we have been learning how to use the standard algorithm to solve two-digit numbers multipliedby two-digit or three-digit numbers. Here is an example of this: 56 x 14 = ? 541 x 26= ?

In Science, we have started our Physical Science Unit. This includes understanding that matter is anything that has mass and volume; understanding how to separate mixtures and solutions using their physical properties; and understanding the difference between physical and chemical changes. We did a lab in class where students were able to use scientific tools such as a magnet, a graduated cylinder, a filter, and a screen. Students had to use the physical properties of some items to separate mixtures of salt and sand, sand and iron, sugar and water, and salt and water using the scientific tools.

From Mrs. Dorsey and Mrs. Rhymes… In reading, we have been using key details in literature to determine similarities and differences between characters, settings, and events. We have also been working with finding the theme or central messages in our stories. When we pay attention to our characters behaviors and how they respond to challenges in the story, we discover the theme. In writing, we are working on planning for and structuring opinion essays. In addition, we are learning about ways to use commas and citing titles in our writing.

We are also planning for class trips and working towards having every parent registered in Class Dojo. Our fifth grade safety patrol students have been chosen, posted throughout our campus, and have begun to show their leadership skills. They support us, in the mornings and afternoons, helping to keep our students and campus safe.

From the look of things, this is a promising and productive year for our fifth grade students!
