Message from Father Pergjini:

Last Monday, October first, was the feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux. In my confessional room is a picture of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Many years ago that picture was given to me as a gift and since then I placed it in my confessional room at whatever parish I was assigned. As I sit on my chair I look at her face. I feel her eyes have a penetrating look within myself. I take refuge for hope, strength and advice just looking at the face of Saint Therese. She has been and still is the saint who has inspired and moved many souls, and my soul too. Many times when I am tired from the fatigue of the day or feeling the sinful pain of others and my sinfulness too, I look at her face to console my soul. I always feel and experience her presence, her smile and her amazing faith. She penetrates into my sinfulness, my fatigue, my stress, my frustration, but also my hopes and joys of priesthood and the tears of those who humbly kneel confessing their sins. We both experience the grace of forgiveness through the sacrament of confession. She too knelt confessing her sins. What a great and humble saint she was, still continue to be in Heaven interceding for us. The mother superior asked her to write her life. Out of obedience she started to write what we treasure today. No one before her death knew what she wrote. After her death the sisters of her convent were the first to read what became the famous the story of her soul. They never were able to understand her holiness when she was among them. Her extraordinary humility made it impossible to discover her sufferings and sacrifices. One can see the beauty and power of Christ in the eyes of Saint Therese of Infant Jesus. Her vocation was “love” as she used to say, love for Christ and those around her. Yes, in-deed a saint is always hidden in the eyes of many, but never in the eyes of Christ. She was 24 years old when she died. There are thousands who have read and reread the story of her soul, and I am one of them, moved by her unique life since she was a child. It is a real treasure for spiritual food for our broken souls. The story of a soul that has been an instrument of conversion and healings in every corner of the world. It has been translated in fifty languages. This book is a powerful instrument to teach the most fundamental Christian virtue of humility and how to love and see Christ in the presence of others. There are many humble and holy events that witnessed her holiness even in small things. She never complained but humbly accepted every experience as a moment of grace. Knowing her life is an amazing experience of humility and love for Christ and others and looking at her face in my confessional room, I feel that she knows my weaknesses and my sins, the sins of others, their tears and their pain. As the penitent kneels and begging God’s mercy, I look at her, begging her to help me in order to help them in their life. It is a very powerful experience thinking of her life of love and humility and looking the depth of her eyes who looks at me. I am spiritually strengthened during those moments of grace and peace. The penitents are not aware what I think during those moments and how I communicate looking at her picture. A powerful prayer that she wrote embraces all of us who are on our knees in confessional room begging Christ for mercy. She wrote these words from her humble and loving heart: "O my God! I ask for myself and for those dear to me the grace to perfectly fulfill your holy will, to accept for love of you the joys and sorrows of this passing life so that we may one day be united in heaven for all eternity. Amen." And this is my experience in my confessional. It is the power of Christ in my priestly ministry that through the intercessions of the Saint Therese and others saints that we are embraced by Christ’s love and mercy preparing us for Eternity. And this is the life of the priest, my life and your life shared and lived in the power of Christ in my confessional room. In those moments of silence, I think of the present crisis that we are going through, our weaknesses and failures begging Christ's mercy looking deeply into in the eyes of Saint Therese. Saint Therese pray for us! Amen!

ST. CALLISTUS (+222?)

In the account of the martyrs published in 354, St. Callistus is mentioned together

with Popes Pontianus, Fabian, Cornelius and Sixtus II. His feast was set on this date as early as the 3rd century. Callistus was a slave who was the founder of a bank in Rome where the baths of Caracalla now stand. Accused of a crime, he was condemned but later freed; still later, after a new accusation by his Jewish creditors, Callistus was again condemned and this time was sent to work in the salt mines in Sardinia (186). Liberated through the intercession of Pope Victor, he went to Anzio, Italy, where he was supported by the local church. He was ordained a priest by Pope Zephyrinus (198-217) and was placed in charge of the cemetery which eventually became the catacomb of the popes. He was elected pope in 217 but an opposing minority resisted and thus caused the first schism in the Church. During the five years of his pontificate, Callistus was outstanding for his defense of traditional Catholic teaching and for his pastoral activity. He also made changes in the penitential practices and in marriage law. Although there was no persecution of the Church at that time, Callistus is listed as a martyr although there is no authentic account of his death. There is a legend that he was thrown into a well with a millstone around his neck; another legend states that he was lynched during a riot. His tomb was discovered in 1960.

God of mercy, hear the prayers of your people that we may be helped by St. Callistus,

whose martyrdom we celebrate with joy.
