  • Mike and Sharon Garrett’s family photo for their prayer card as they arrived to serve with MMS in 1989.

Ryan and Mary Hokuf, with their daughter Brooke, arrived at MMS in April 2017 to begin building experience and knowledge in maintaining missionary aircraft. They came from Jamestown, NY, where Ryan had been working as a tool design engineer. The Hokufs will remain in Coshocton until early 2020, awaiting the birth of their second child before they move to Burlington, NC, to begin flight training with Missionary Air Group.

Mike and Sharon Garrett Retire from Career in Mission Work

Mike and Sharon first came to MMS in 1989, when Mike began his aircraft maintenance apprenticeship. Their career of missionary service has taken them to Bolivia, Haiti, and Honduras, and most recently, back to MMS Aviation.

For the past 5 years, Mike has been training new apprentice mechanics and overseeing the paint shop at MMS. They will be moving to live closer to their children and grandchildren. We are grateful for their faithfulness in mission service!

Keith and Karen Dodson Return to Serve at MMSKeith and Karen will continue to live in Graham, NC, as they serve MMS in the areas of candidate developmentand partnership services. They have many years of experience coaching new missionaries through the process of application and raising support. We are glad to have them back on the team!

  • Hangar HighlightsA bit of what’s happened recently

Bearhawk KitplaneJenny Haver has been supervising apprentice Josh Snader and Stephen Crothers as they recover the airframe and controls with fabric and begin the process of reassembling this aircraft for service in Haiti.

Cessna 206 for Ministry in VenezuelaJim Newman has completed the new avionics installation, while Dale Coates is wrapping up an annual inspection and the paperwork required to complete the project.

Citabria Wings for Missionary TrainingChris Jutte is working with Mark Heikoop to replace the wooden spars on the wings with aluminum, so that the plane will be better suited for missionary pilot training in Missouri.

Annual Inspection and Avionics Work for Cessna 172Chuck Egbert is performing an annual inspection, and Mike Dunkley has installed an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Transponder on this airplane. The FAA is requiring all aircraft operating in U.S.-controlled airspace to have this equipment installed by January 1, 2020. The new transponder will give air traffic controllers more information about the aircraft and improve safety in the skies. The airplane is operated by a ministry that reaches Chinese nationals living in the United States. Engine ShopJosh Adelsberger is supervising apprentice Dan Neely as they have inspected and repaired an engine following a prop strike. The engine shop continues to be one of the busiest rooms in the hangar, with two engines currently in progress and more waiting in line!

Tool ControlGlen Evert has been reorganizing and cataloging the shop tools. Each tool has a specified location and barcode tag so that tools can be traced and secured. This will enhance safety, since a forgotten tool in an aircraft can cause damage or accidents.

Josh Snader applies finishing tape to the fabric covering on the Bearhawk fuselage.

Chris Jutte and Mark Heikoop reassemblethe Citabria wings.

Dan Neely prepares a recently repaired engine for a test run in our engine testing room.

Glen Evert reorganizes the MMS tool crib to improve safety

    and efficiency.

Rapid ResponseDale Coates recently returned from Cameroon, where he completed an annual inspection on a Cessna 207. Chuck Egbert assisted Harvest Aviation, in Wauchula, Florida, with an inspection on a Piper Navajo. Chris Jutte led a team of apprentices Mark Heikoop, Dan Neely, and Stephen Crothers on a trip to Missionary Flights International, to assist with a hot-section inspection and engine installation on a turbine engine-powered DC3.

  • Enhancing Trust

t some point during this Christmas season, our family will sit and watch A Charlie Brown Christmas. This show, which aired for the first time on CBS in 1965, has become an American favorite and a staple of seasonal entertainment. In the story, the Peanuts gang prepares a Christmas play, with Charlie Brown in charge of the production. Charlie Brown is disillusioned by the commercialism of the season, and his efforts to add meaning to the holiday are met with failure. When the whole gang mocks Charlie for his choice of a pathetic little Christmas tree, he asks out loud if anyone knows what Christmas is really all about.

Linus, the gang’s blanket-clutching theologian, recites Luke 2:8-14, which contains the angels’ proclamation of Christ’s birth to the shepherds. Linus ends his recitation with, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” It is a touching, simple, and pure presentation of the gospel.

I am often asked what MMS Aviation is all about. The standard answer is, “We prepare people and planes for worldwide missionary service.” I talk about our apprentice program, which provides hands-on training for small missionary aircraft maintenance, and how our work is done for missionary programs at no labor-cost, saving these organizations millions of dollars over the years. We have brochures, newsletters, a website, and all kinds of ways to express who MMS is, and what we do. But would you permit me to tell you what MMS is all about?

I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. -Luke 2:10b-11 (KJV)

    For his glory,
