On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the RIDMA Ball 2017. I am humble and deeply grateful to everyone who came to enjoy special night while supporting the RIDMA mission of helping less privileged children.

During last 7 years, you have supported us for 7 fund raising events. From the funds raised, we have developed 5 rural schools and started scholarship program for talented but financially disadvantaged students. With the generous support from the sponsors who came forward, we have given 30 scholarships within short period of time. Without your support, we wouldn’t have spent over 5 million Sri Lankan rupees to uplift the education in highly rural schools in Sri Lanka.

Being legalised charity, we believe in fund raising is not an appeal for funds. It is something we offer you to enjoy and making a surplus out of it for our charitable purpose. We have selected different type of Sri Lankan Arts like Stage Drama, Dance, Falk music and classical music in our past events. This time, we picked a something very special and hardly have you experienced in Perth.

Baila music was initiated by Wally Bastiansz. He is considered as the father of Baila. He was a traffic warden from Colombo who was half Sinhala and half Dutch Burgher. He began adapting the 6/8 ‘kaffirhina’ rhythms to accommodate Sinhala lyrics in 1940. By the 1970s musicians, including MS Fernando and Maxwell Mendis, had helped Baila grow into a well-known and respected style of Sri Lankan popular music. Among the well-known artists who carried forward our own Baila music style, Nihal Nelson and Saman De Silve are very special. Tonight, we are so lucky have both of them in Perth to perform in live for you.

I am so grateful for my unbelievably committed team who work hard to bring the wonderful event success. Our business community played a huge role in this event by sponsoring the event in various ways. I hope you all enjoy authentic flavour of Sri-Lanka Baila music.
