• Large personal bias!• Easy job - everyone talked about astronomy• Chilean astronomy already competitve globally but proper

growth/use of e-science essential to improve• 10% Chilean time on international telescopes is a TREMENDOUS

and UNIQUE driver• More BIG telescopes will soon come (e.g. LSST, ALMA) and

others being planned… • Current data rates already very high and will soon (a few years)

be astronomical… • WE MUST ACT NOW, AND WELL, TO KEEP GLOBALLY

COMPETITIVE, PROPERLY USE OUR UNIQUE ADVANTAGE AND PREPARE FOR THE DATA AVALANCHE (~15 TB/NIGHT)!

• Chile should join IVOA - ChiVO!

• KAWAX project already addressing this in detail but we should JOIN NOW!

• Will be first South American member!

• Requires leader, leadership…

• Also funding for software/middleware development, hardware maintainence
