IBM i Software

• There are three types of software for IBM i (from the perspective of this presentation)

– IBM i – base operating system

– Licensed Program Products (LPPs), for example

• DB2 WebQuery

The Basics

• IBM i licensing is based on hardware model / machine size

– One IBM i license required per core (plus users on machines where applicable: P05, P10)

• “License” is also referred to as an "entitlement“

• IBM i requires software license keys

• Three machine size groups as per other Power Hardware platforms – Small, Medium and Large

• For IBM i, there are also processor groups (aka “software tiers”) which map to machine sizes:

– Small processor groups P05/P10/P20

– Medium processor group P30

– Large processor group P50NOTE: P05 and P10 are priced per processor plus users

• All of these tiers are also mapped to IBM i transfer groups (which are only used for the IBM i Entitlement Transfer Offering)

Basic Licensing Rules

• IBM i operating system is only licensed for the machine serial number on whichit was originally sold

– These terms are modified with specific offerings: e.g. Capacity Backup, IBM iEntitlement Transfer offering, Power Enterprise Pools, etc.

• PowerVM is only licensed for the machine serial number on which it was originally sold and therefore cannot be transferred to a different machine

– PowerVM has an activation code which is specific to the machine serial number

• From V5R3 and later, most IBM i Licensed Program Products can be transferred between systems belonging to the same Enterprise

– For V5R2 and earlier, the software stack could be sold with the machine to another customer

• For all other Power Software, products licensed through Passport Advantage, and ISV Software, refer to the software license terms

• The Entitled System Support (ESS) website is an important resource for software information– Software Entitlements – electronic Proof of Entitlement (ePoE)

User-based Licensing

• Two components to pricing for P10 and P05 machines– Per processor core – Per user

• Users can be purchased in blocks of 5 (P05 tier machines) or 10 (P10 tier machines)• Unlimited User Entitlement option• The charge is for concurrent users• A user is a person – not a userid, a profile, a program, or anything else!

– A person who accesses IBM i and exchanges credentials directly with IBM i or indirectly with an application running on IBM i

15 Days vs 70 Days vs 40 Days vs 60 Days??

• 15 Days - Migration:– When you transfer IBM i software entitlements from one machine to

another, you are allowed concurrent use of the entitlements on both machines for 15 days

• Concurrent use beyond 15 days requires IBM i Temporary Licensing (5733-ITL)

• Side-by-side RPQ

Refer to FAQ at the end of the presentation regarding “When does the 15 days start?”

• 70 Days – Evaluation / Try and Buy:– Evaluation of keyed products allows trial use for up to 70 days with no key

required – The 70 days is only for evaluation purposes, not for productive use of a

program. Migration is considered productive use

• 40 Days - Emergencies: – In emergencies, temporary keys for 40 days can be issued– Used in cases where a permanent solution is pending or in process (a

software order or transfer)

• 60 Days – IBM i OS Transfer: – Used in the IBM i Entitlement Transfer offering:

• If you remove all processors and/or all users from the donor, 60-day temporary keys for one processor and/or one user created in order to complete verification process


40-Day Temporary Key Process for Emergencies

• IBM i OS: – Tied to the machine serial number, must stay with the machine when

ownership is transferred• However, the IBM i Entitlement Transfer offering allows eligible

entitlements to permanently transfer to another machine within the same enterprise

• CBU offering only allows temporary transfer

• PowerVM:– Tied to machine serial number, stays on machine when system

sold/transferred

• IBM i non-OS LPPs and IBM i optional features can transfer to another system within the same Enterprise– V5R2 and earlier, the whole software stack could be transferred with the

machine to any new owner• If V5R2 or earlier use Internal Request Form (contact Key Center at

– V5R3 and later, use the ESS system (or email [email protected]) or configure a license transfer order in e-config

IBM i Processor and User Entitlement Transfer Offering• Enables IBM i processor and user entitlement to be permanently transferred between

selected systems:– Implemented worldwide via IBM e-config– SWMA required on donor system– Donor system must have been installed for a minimum of one year– Transfer fee is $5K USD plus additional uplift charges if transferring to higher tier– IBM i processor and user entitlements move to target system– Base entitlements: the following POWER5 models had these base entitlements

• Donor and receiving machines do not need to be at same version/release• You can configure IBM i license transfer to a target machine at

the same or a later level of IBM i than the donor (but not at an earlier release than the donor)

• Available in both e-config Software-only and NEWSYS paths

• 60 Day Temporary Keys: • For IBM i Entitlement Transfer offering:

If you remove all processors and/or all users from the donor, 60-day temporary keys for one processor and/or one user created in order to complete verification process


Temporary Software Licenses: 5733-ITL

• Replace machine with new machine with different serial, transferring entitlements from existing, need to use entitlements concurrently for more than 15 days

• 5733-ITL can also be used for special projects or temporary workloads, not just for migrations

• Ordered via 5733-ITL (e-config)– Need serial number of recipient box

• Order any number of months up to a maximum of 12• Covers IBM i OS as well as many IBM i LPPs

– DB2 Web Query is not included with 5733-ITL offering• User-based LPPs are handled as follows:

A Service Provider, Managed Service Provider, or Cloud Service Provider is a company that is hired

by clients outside such company’s enterprise to perform certain information technology services (such

as hosting workloads) on an ongoing basis, for an agreed upon fee as specified in a service level

agreement or other contract.

For purpose of IBM MSP Utility Pricing Offer, it is a requirement that the SP utilize eligible IBM

1. 15 Days - Migration:When you transfer IBM i software entitlements from one machine to another, you are allowed concurrent use of the entitlements on both machines for 15 days. Question: When does the 15 days start?

Answer: If you are transferring IBM i entitlements to a new target machine, the 15-day period begins when an IPL of IBM i is performed for the first time in any partition on the new machine. If you are transferring IBM i entitlements to an existing target machine, the 15-day period begins as soon as you begin migrating IBM i workload from the donor machine to the target machine; any testing on the target machine prior to actual workload movement counts as migration activities included in the 15-day period. If you need additional time to complete the migration, temporary software licensing is required.

CBU for i Overview

• IBM i is only licensed to the machine on which it was originally purchased and requires hardware serial-specific license keys

• The Capacity Backup (CBU) offering modifies IBM i licensing terms and allows you to temporarily transfer IBM i entitlements from your primary machine to a CBU machine, saving the cost of purchasing full IBM i entitlement for the CBU machine (there are minimum IBM i licensing requirements required on the CBU machine). This can provide a significant benefit to customers.

• The CBU offering is different from the IBM i Processor and User Transfer offering, where the Transfer offering also modifies IBM i licensing terms but permanentlytransfers IBM i entitlements to another machine


CBU for i Overview

• A CBU is a Power server ordered with a CBU specify feature code

Registration of the primary system and CBU pairing and acceptance of the CBU terms and conditions are required prior to CBU order fulfillment

• The primary system must be of equal or higher software tier (processor group level)

• A CBU machine requires a minimum of one IBM i processor entitlement; P05 and P10 tier models also require a minimum block of user entitlements (5 or 10 users, respectively)

All productive workload running on the CBU is required to be licensed, e.g., replication services are considered productive workload

• The primary and CBU machines must be in the same enterprise

• The CBU feature may only be ordered on the purchase of a new server or type/model upgrade – plant orders only

The licensing terms of the CBU are only available to the original owner of the CBU machine and are not transferrable to another party when the machine is sold

• The designation of primary system and CBU cannot be switched

Designated backup machine (DBM)

• The DBM is distinct and separate from the CBU offering

• Can be a new or used machine, is paired with at least one primary machine

• The primary system’s CPW rating must be greater than or equal to the CPW rating of the DBM

• All processor cores used for backup recovery services, including those used to create and or manage the backup recovery environment, must be licensed

– I.e., IBM i operating system entitlements are not temporarily transferable as in the case of the CBU offering. IBM i entitlements are required on the DBM for all IBM i workload which can run on the DBM


Designated Backup Machine (DBM)

• Two-year temporary keys for the non-OS LPPs for the DBM are available by completing the form TEMPORARY KEY REQUEST FOR BACKUP MACHINES

– Upon approval, temporary keys are generated for the DBM for all of the primary system’s entitled LPPs

– Any LPPs for which temporary keys are acquired…

• May not be used concurrently on primary and DBM

• A client may use one DBM to backup multiple primary machines by creating a partition on the DBM which meets CPW requirements

– When submitting the Temporary Key Request form, the client is required to provide verification that the CPW rating of the DBM partition does not exceed the CPW rating of the client primary (i.e. from the HMC, show the processors allocated on the client's partition)

• Is SWMA required on the DBM?

– If you need software support on the DBM, acquire SWMA on the DBM serial

– If you upgrade the entitlements on the primary system, you will need SWMA on the DBM in order to get upgraded temporary keys for the LPPs


Designated Backup Machine (DBM) for Service Providers

DBM for Service Providers?

• Subject to the same requirements as previous page

• A Service Provider can own the DBM while the primary systems are owned by the end client, i.e., unlike CBU, the primary machines and DBM are not required to be in the same enterprise

– When submitting the Temporary Key Request form, the SP is required to provide verification that the CPW rating of the DBM partition used to back up the client primary does not exceed the CPW rating of the client primary machine (i.e. from the HMC, show the processors allocated on the client's partition)

• Question: I am a Service Provider with 50 clients and one DBM. How many IBM i operating system entitlements do I need on the DBM?Answer: Acquire IBM i entitlements for all concurrent workload which will run on the DBM

CPW DBMBased on the CPW rating of the DBM, the IBM i workload could use more or less processor cores than on the primary system. In this example, four processor entitlements on the primary only requires 3 processor entitlement on the DBM.


Summary Comparison of CBU and DBM:

• CBU: allows temporary transfer of IBM i operating system entitlements from primary to CBU

DBM: no temporary transfer of IBM i. All processors running IBM i operating system must be licensed for workload running on DBM

• CBU: must be in the same enterprise as the primary

DBM: a service provider can own the DBM and provide backup services to machines owned by clients

• CBU: processor group size of primary must be greater than or equal to processor group size of CBU

DBM: CPW rating of primary must be greater than or equal to CPW rating of DBM

• CBU: designation may only be acquired at the time of purchase and must be either a new machine or a machine-type-model upgrade; only available to original owner of machine

DBM: can be a new or used machine

• For both CBU and DBM: can request temporary keys for LPPs (subject to requirements)


How to Get Temporary Keys for a CBU or DBM

Temporary keys for the IBM i operating system are not provided for the CBU or DBM machine. The CBU agreement allows customers to ignore Out of Compliance messages

You can get two-year temporary keys for non-OS IBM i LPPs (and OS optional features like Media & Storage Extensions) for a backup system (CBU or DBM) by completing the form REQUEST FOR DESIGNATION OF A BACKUP IBM MACHINE

• For any software for which you’ve acquired temporary keys, software cannot run concurrently on primary and backup system

• Any productive workload on the backup system must be licensed

• In order to qualify as a backup system…– For CBU: primary must be greater than or equal to CBU in processor group size– For DBM: primary must be greater than or equal to DBM as measured by CPW Latest
