"WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER ONE OPENS"
R ' S NOTE
YOU MAY NOTICE A NEW LOOK TO ICON THIS MONTH.
The coolest part of what I do is getting to work with so many
amazing people. I have made so many new friends, bumped
heads countless times with others and been sad when, for
whatever reason, people move on.
It was a huge loss for us when Rhiann Ahn, our Graphic
Director, handed in her notice after being the driving force
behind the magazine for over two years. Without her, we had
a pile of pictures and text.
But when one door closes, another one opens, and we're
delighted to welcome Krise Shepherd to our family. I've been
in awe of Krise for so long now, and finally getting to know
him and work with him - I'm constantly in big gooey fangirl
mode!!!
Change is a good thing, and I am looking forward to a new
era with ICON Lifestyle Magazine. JORDAN IS WEARING...

School’s out forever for many residents, but there are 1175 learning locations in-world for every possible interest. Many destinations are adjuncts of real world educational institutions, but the majority are for age-verified naughty school kids, giving new meaning to the term adult education.
SL extensions of RL institutions include the colorful National University of Singapore, host to student created exhibits. Upon arrival at Indiana State University you’re greeted with a freebie box of ISU T-shirts for your proud student avi to sport. The Early College Second Life Program (ECSLP) at the East Carolina University is packed with new students focused on science, tech and engineering. At the Goethe Institut, you can learn to speak German for free. It’s helpful to sprechen Deutsch since all signage at the Institut is in German but if you have trouble, that’s why google translate was invented.
While the SL extensions of RL organizations are incredible, what’s more inspiring are schools that exist only in-world. Child avis can experience elementary school at places like Blossom Hill Academy Elementary School, a co-

ed school for children aged three to twelve. Tuition is 250L a month and uniform policy is strictly enforced so make sure your tie’s on straight and your shirt properly buttoned. If you or your child have an interest in dance, enroll at the LP Ballet Academy, one of the first in-world ballet schools. Tuition is 150L a month and includes membership to the Cougars Gym.
If you’re looking to learn crucial SL skills like building, scripting and texture creation you have your pick of schools. Popular choices are the Happy Hippo Building School, Caledon Oxbridge University, and the College of Scripting, Music and Science. If you want to strut the catwalk as a top model, do your homework before you sign away your Lindens. There are a plethora of schools and agencies in this competitive market. Since 2007 the Rodeo Drive Modeling Agency and Training Centre has been grooming super-models and guarantees work after graduation. Bel’Lys Academy is a bilingual (French and English) school that offers diplomas and certificates as well as the option to take individual courses of your choice. Perhaps the most well known and reputable Academy is part of GLANCE International. Offering one-on-one classes, students graduate with a professional portfolio and membership in the GLANCE Model Management group.
Want to break into the world of escorts and dancers? At the Liaison Training School (LETS) students begin with the basics of avatar appearance, dancing and emoting then move
to onstage instruction, managing client relationships, how to promote their services. The Sakura Academy is a finishing school for women located in a lush, tropical setting. Students are groomed in appearance, poise and refinement, learning skills that can be applied to working as a courtesan.
For the wild filly in need of a firm hand, take your pick of institutions dedicated to the discipline of disobedient students. “Spanking the Naughty and Humbling the Haughty” is the motto of the Princess Reform School, promising humility, obedience and service from its graduates. At the Cavendish Academy for Girls, young ladies are encouraged to explore

their own sensual awakening. The Miscreant’s Academy is a co-ed school for difficult students in need of moral training. For those pursuing the Gorean lifestyle, the Village of Caledonia and Slave Academy is a full roleplay sim and slave school for submissives. The Dark Side Clubhouse BDSM Academy is enjoying its fourth year as one of the most popular destinations for the BDSM community. More than just a sex sim, the Academy offers an introduction to the BDSM lifestyle, discreet training for dominants, couples coaching, emoting classes and professional slave training. For those with more esoteric tastes, visit St. Abbot’s School of Deviance, catering to Dolcette Culinary Arts students and Mad Science Majors.
At Lady Jane’s Academy, a beautiful sim built to mimic a traditional English boarding school, Julie Oxidor cultivates strict obedience in her students with a fairness, gentility and a collection of fierce switches and paddles. With 171 students and 210 members, Miss Julie, as she is referred to respectfully by staff and
students, stresses that Lady Jane’s is a place where both students and staff enjoy themselves.
Like a proper boarding school, Lady Jane’s boasts a dormitory for students. “Students may set their home to here,” Miss Julie notes, indicating the large shared room furnished with luxurious beds, each with its own ornate wooden chest at the foot. Shared mealtimes are part of the student’s routine and may be enjoyed on the cobblestone patio adjacent to the dining room.
The rules of the Academy are simple and straightforward. “No sex allowed,” Miss Julie states first. “No brutality, no means no. We do not have male students and our teachers must be here to roleplay, teach and to treat the
students with respect. Subjects are chosen by teachers, some are out of character, regular discussion classes and some are classes with spankings. To gain admission to the school, a student tours the grounds and are given the rules and if they wish to join, they are accepted.”
"The rules of the Academy are
simple and straightforward."

The Duche de CouerWRITTEN BY PET KARU PHOTOS BY SOPHIELLE
er
It's a place where the love of the arts, culture
and history merge. The Duche de Couer offers
all manner of living options, from inner-city
flats, studios, larger apartments through to
villas, chalets, manor houses and maisons in
the countryside. The region is comprised of 10
sims joined together to make a massive
community. Ideal for shopping, romance,
activities, events, quiet nooks and crannies, this
region offers a feast for the eyes, ears and
heart.
The primary language spoken in the duchy is
English, though it is an international
community. Role play may be occurring , but it
is not necessary for you to participate. Role
players will not involve you in anything beyond
courteous discussion. Many individuals dress
for the time period, even though they are not
participating. That is up to you. Nearly all
stores in the duchy sell period items, and
transportation within the duchy is by horse,
carriage/sleigh or rowboat.
Why this time and place? Many western
governments and ideals are based on concepts
that were discussed by some of the greatest
thinkers in England and France in the Age of
Enlightenment. Centers of thought including
L'Académie Francaise, L'Academie Royale des
Sciences and L'Academie Royale de Musique.
These were some of the most important public
institutions that made people begin to question
established thought. Each Academie holding
their own uniqueness to the period when
France was the center of all things new and
challenge.
51 ICON magazine
This was perhaps an unintended side effect that
people would become educated and begin to
reason about age old myths. The power of the
church and monarchy was questioned during
this time. France was arguably the center of
Enlightenment in the 18th century that had a
direct effect on the government of the United
States, and thereafter many governments of
Europe, including France itself.
The Duchy is not a "court" and does not cater to
"nobles". If you are here to get a title, check
out one of the other historical sims from this
time period. It can be done in the duchy, but it
is a very slow process and you can be assured
that those that have a duchy title really deserve
them!
There is no militia, and any role play rarely
engages in battles or hunts with guns. Any
kind of weapon related event in the duchy is
generally a skilled sport.
While the Duche' de Coeur is a fictitious name
for the area of western France, that is made of
the real life names Provence, Lanquedoc,
Aquitaine, and Poitou and further north,
Normandie and Touraine, and to the far east,
Franca Contea. It is an accurate depiction of a
world of friendship and romance as it might
have been around the Age of Enlightenment.
"We", says Comtesse Baharat Atlas, "prefer to
think of this as a real life environment with real
people who really, but 225 years ago in an
idealistic world where all classes live together in
harmony". For more information about the
sim, contact Duc Bedrich Panacek and
Duchesse SkyeRyder Varriale.
This year The Academies Royal de Musique and
Peinture presented their 1st Annual Music &
Arts Calendar of events from July 29th-31st.
On July 29th it opened with Sheela Nagy's
Labgraal Celtic Group performing at Isla
Pequena - Aquitaine Coeur, Aquitaine Coeur
Sud.
The line up included some of the Musique
Academie's regular performers like Lady
Champagne Rain, Waltkeys Faith, Miles
Eleventhhauer. This year the Academie
welcomed many new artists such as Tukso
Okey, Noma Falta and Nadine Moraini, just to
name a few. Unity Productions was there too,
presenting "A Soaking Worship" in the chapel.
The festival showcased the talent you can
expect during the 2011-2012 season for The
Academie. The Academie Royale de Peinture
will host the grand opening of the Duche de
Coeur's Art Gallery which will feature many of
Second Life's most talented artists such as
Masako and Lady Fae Varriale.
This year's season promises to include
theatrical productions. What you can expect as
the calendar unfolds will be a performance of
Madame Butterfly in their Opera House,
performed by Lady Isabella Rumsford. Unity
Productions is also booked to bring renditions
of "Come Away My Beloved" in October, "The
Creation Story" in December, "Struggles for
Freedom - The Misfits" in February 2012 and
closing performance of "Salome" in May 2012.
All of Unity Productions performances are
original and thought provoking.
Soak up the history and romance of a time
when thought, art and culture came into it's
own by visiting the Duche de Couer and
exploring its stunning sims, or check out some
of the productions that will be coming
throughout the year. It's an experience that will
leave you breathless and longing for days gone
by.
MY STYLE
Name: Chase Sinclaire
What I Do in SL: Photographer and the owner of Paparazzi Studios. I work with SL businesses to create product photos, posters and advertisement pieces. My specialty is doing themed images and pinup photos.
ICON: How would you describe your decorating style?Chase: My decorating style is modern contemporary. I like creating warm open spaces that feel inviting and comfortable. I definitely prefer decorating smaller homes. I find the larger homes don’t scale very well and often times you find yourself in rooms much bigger then they really should be. As a result those spaces tend to feel unbalanced and awkward even when fully furnished.
ICON: Does your style change at all?Chase: Not really. With so many options on the market it’s relatively easy to give a space a fresh look while remaining true to a specific style.
ICON magazine 58
ICON: Does it reflect your RL style?Chase: Most definitely! I tend to favor neutral wall colors and be bold with my accessories, pillow and throws.
ICON: What was your most extravagant purchase?Chase: My most extravagant purchase has to be my stainless kitchen made by ARIA.
ICON: What is the one store you would call your decorating weakness spot?Chase: That’s a tough one. There are so many talented designers in SL. Lets just say I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of my favorite stores issued me a gold card lol.

usual dark, dry colors they try to force feed everyone.

Our Style ICON this month is Anne Dakun, an amazing stylist

talented Jule Lemondrop and we’re bringing more RL looks

Deep in Frank Baum’s magical world of Oz,
Princess Ozma celebrated her birthday. For her
party, Glinda the Good Witch wanted to give
her something special, so she created the
magical Pufflings, a fun, mischievous, and
whimsical bird who until recently lived in the Oz
royal aviary. Now ready to explore the world,
Pufflings are available at Ozimals for you to
own, breed and experience all thanks to
Malkavyn Eldritch and Candy Cerveau, owners
and creators of Ozimals breedable pets.
Known inworld for the breedable bunnies,
Ozimals is one of the most well-recognized
brand names in Second Life and the business
has brought joy, entertainment and excitement
to residents for a few years now. The brain-child
of Candy’s love for animals and Malk’s passion
for creation, the breedable bunnies debuted
mimicking real life breeds, colors and genetic
traits.
“I've always loved caring for animals in real life
and I'd played some games where you care for
pets, but I always felt there could be something
more to games like that,” Candy said. “So I said
to my partner Malkavyn (Malk for short),
‘Wouldn't it be cool if we made a sculpted pet
that had real genetics and textures and made
that into a really interesting game?’ After a
conversation with friends, we decided on
bunnies as our first animal and we went from
there!”
Malk and Candy have found so much joy from
seeing their creations change the lives of SL
residents and it’s a driving force for them to
make more creatures and continue to keep
Ozimals in for the long haul!
“The stories about how Ozimals bunnies have
changed people’s lives for the better make
everything worthwhile for us,” Malk explained.
“We went into this venture loving games and
wanting to provide an entertaining experience
for our customers. The fact that it has become so
much more for some people both humbles us
and fills us with excitement for the future. We
have always believed that games and fun are
an important facet of our existence and can
truly make a difference in a person's quality of
life beyond just momentary entertainment. They
have the potential to be so much more.”
ICON magazine 112
The Ozimals bunnies have boosted
Malk and Candy’s business
community to more than 10,000
members and supporters in their
subscribe-o group.
“I think people have a special love
for the bunnies that remains
through all the different breedables
that have come and gone over the
past two years and so they remain
very loyal to us. We're incredibly
grateful for that support as well as
the excitement that is building
about our new release!” Candy
said.
Malk agreed saying, “We began
Ozimals under our main avatars.
We have continued to stay in the
community, answering questions,
helping people and even dealing
with the occasional controversy
personally. This is because we truly
believe in our company and what
we do. We continue to develop
new products for the breedable
community, for Second Life and for
the gaming community as a whole,
because we love doing it.”
Ozimals plans to increase its line
with some products that are going
in entirely new directions, with a
level of interaction and
participation like nothing the
community has yet seen! The
Pufflings were the first release in
this direction, but on the drawing
board is the rumored "Strangeling”
which Candy describes as “a pure
imaginary creature, drawing on
many different parts from many
animals to make something
fantastical.”
Challenged by maintaining
originality and keeping updated,
this creative duo has released so
many different colors, types and
special editions of the bunnies,
including releases for charity and
holidays.
“We have dozens of breeds and
colors of bunnies available,”
ICON magazine 114
Candy said. “Some of the rarest are the
Special Event Elites that are only available
for a limited time around the holiday
seasons like Halloween or Christmas, as
well as the Charity Elites like the Alien
Bunny for Haiti Relief.”
If you haven’t had a chance to walk the
golden streets of the Magical World of
Oz, a sim created with Frank Baum’s
world in mind and designed by Malk,
Candy and sim designer, Saiyge Lotus,
you have got to click your heels and head
to the whimsical world of Ozimals to
explore the creations and imaginations of
Malk and Candy. But be careful, you
might end up adopting a bunny or
bringing home a cute little Puffling in your
pocket!

CONFESSIONS OF A FANGIRL
WRITTEN BY MARVEL MORANIPHOTOS BY RICO PLISSKIN
Although the universe has thwarted my destiny
to marry Duran Duran’s bass player John
Taylor, it smiled upon me when it brought him
to Second Life.
I was eleven when I realized he
was The One and decided to
save myself for him, a simple
feat considering I was a scrawny,
bespectacled, bucktoothed child.
I eventually outgrew my ugly
duckling looks and discovered
boys my own age but in my
secret heart I would only ever
belong to JT, though he, alas,
belonged to the world. I’m
still the most devoted Duranie
on Earth (yes I know that's the
prerequisite to be a Duranie,
no one loves them more
than you), cherishing such
memories as the time I
threw myself shrieking onto
the hood of their limousine
as they left a local
television station and had
to be plucked off by
security guards, or the weeks spent begging my
friend’s older brother to chaperone us to our
nosebleed seats for the Seven and the Ragged
Tiger tour because we weren’t allowed to go
without adult supervision. Upon arrival at the
venue he informed us that if we screamed even
119 ICON magazine
once, he would drag us back to the car
immediately. We were the only girls in the
entire stadium not screaming, sitting quietly in
our seats with binoculars while he read a
magazine with cotton balls stuffed in his ears.
Then there is the fond memory of
discovering that a friend had been
systematically stealing pieces of my
vast collection of DD paraphernalia
for a year; a button here, a
wristband there. I had spent every
penny of hard-earned babysitting
money on Duran Duran and
caught her slipping a mail-
ordered magazine from
England into her backpack. I
still have the lock of hair I
ripped out of her head. I
consider it a souvenir of my
devotion.
When I learned that Duran
Duran was building a sim
in-world, I peed my pants
just a little. I would be
able to properly stalk, I
mean meet them, even if
only in pixellated form. I
spent a week putting together an outfit I
thought suitable just in case I happened to see
one of them in-world. It needed to be carelessly
glamorous, like something Nick Rhodes would
wear, yet slightly dangerous, like Simon LeBon’s
leather pants. Fanatically I checked their
website and the
Destination Guide for event
dates, then discovered to my
horror that my weak little
computer couldn't handle the
intense lag of the Duranie
packed venues.
I took to wandering the Duran
Duran universe alone and
forlorn, drifting over Azizi in the
microphone shaped blimp, riding
the sky tram over the snowy
hillside, lurking in the band's
dressing rooms in Khanada. I
flipped disconsolately through the
crates of vinyl in Pop Trash, spun in
the Mammoth Ferris Wheel,
obsessively visited Katy's Kave, sat in
the Love Chapel in Tion planning my
dream wedding to John Taylor. All my
stalking was in vain, never once did I
so much as glimpse a member of the
band. Visiting the sim sprung from
their boundless creativity was as close
as I would ever get. Until Fate
delivered me into the benevolent hands
of the lovely Jordan Whitt.
She generously offered to let me tag along on
Sahara Merten's interview for the July Too Sexy
Magazine with Nick Rhodes. The date and time
121 ICON magazine
had not yet been confirmed and I lived in a
frenzy of anticipation. I was twelve years old
again, counting down the minutes until the
band stepped into the spotlight, waiting for the
next single to be played on the radio. After
years of fervent worship I would finally meet
with one of the objects of my adoration.
Picture my face when I returned home from a
forced-fun family weekend to discover the
email from Ms. Whitt that read: “Interview
with Nick Rhodes is set for
9 a.m. tomorrow. Hope
you can make it!” The
message was from Friday
evening. I was reading it on
Sunday morning. I had
missed the chance of a
lifetime by twenty-four hours.
I continue to haunt the
fountains of Sahendralite, loiter
around the Lipstick Tower. I love
Duran Duran no less than I did
when I was a twelve years old, but
I am slowly coming to terms with
the fact that I might never marry
John Taylor when I grow up.
The Rise or Fall of the Second Life Economy
Written by Anne Daumig
Value of currency on the decline. Cost of products increasing daily. Business after business closing. Stores barely breaking even. High unemployment. Low consumer spending.
These are all headlines we see in your local newspapers. However, each one of these statements can also be said about Second Life. Have the global economic strains and struggles taken hold of our virtual lives as well? Is our Second Life doomed to follow in the footsteps of our real life?
Recently, I contacted many Second Life business owners – apparel designers, builders, land owners, etc. – to see how the Second Life economy has affected them. The responses I received ranged from minor declines in the bottom line to outright business closings. Sales, once considered extraordinary at most stores are now becoming frequent events. Satellite stores are closing, affecting many of the mall-styled SIMs. Residential and
commercial SIMs have constant vacancies or disappear altogether.
As consumers, we see an item we like, debate its value in comparison to the quality and, I must confess, debate the want vs. need factor. However, do we stop and think about what it takes for the seller to bring their products to the buyer? Do we take into consider the time and talent required to create just a single item? What about the cost of maintaining their stores or marketing their products? We take designers and builders for granted. Yes, we all enjoy receiving a group gift and hunts can be fun, but we also have to remember that these are also businesses that need our purchases to stay alive.
“The attitude of consumedisheartening - most peothe past couple years actufree or close to free, and pay for things.”
123 ICON magazine
In talking with business owners and consumers, there was a statement made that defines the recent mindset. “The attitude of consumers in general is really disheartening - most people who have joined in the past couple years actually expect things to be free or close to free, and are offended to have to pay for things.” I watch the talk in group chats and am amazed how angry and
disparaging people are of stores who actually hid their hunt items or do not place a ten foot arrow above it
saying ‘here it is’. I have gone to some of my favorite stores and found 20–30 green dots on the map all located in one tiny spot, all huddled around a Lucky Chair.
How many of you have participated in one of the hundreds of hunts in the past years and actually remained in the store, after finding the hunt item, to do a little shopping? Take a look around at products available in those stores. Some of my favorite things were discovered by taking a
few extra minutes to admire the talented designs of those many creative builders.
Has the Second Life economy been harmed by sagging interest or lack of technological advancements? We cannot deny these issues exist. People are reporting a lack of interest in virtual worlds, lack of real life free time and a disappointment in advances in software programming as reasons for leaving Second Life. Linden Labs work as hard as inworld business owners to keep things fresh and progressive. But all in all, it is very difficult to come out with new innovations and unique designs. Content theft is a constant issue to the most talented creators, for they do all the hard work and soon find knock-offs selling a week later at a quarter of their price.
Just like your local grocery, clothing store or automotive dealership, Second Life businesses need your support. If not for the hard work and dedication of those designers and builders, our Second Life would be lifeless.

Every day it seems that we are hearing about
stores closing, groups downsizing and people
leaving SL. Everyone keeps saying how they
are combating a falling Economy in SL and are
having to deal with the consequences.
However, for one group of SL business owners
and designers, positive thinking, fresh ideas
and the bonds of friendship and teamwork are
bringing them through these tough times and
causing them to overcome.
Aranel Ah, original owner and creator of
*BOOM*, working with Claire Dallin, Ophelia
Demina, Rico Plisskin and Bethany Heart have
created a place where everyone’s business is
connected to each other and as a team they
tackle the hardships that both SL and RL have
to offer.
“I had already been working with Claire and
Ophelia for quite some time. Claire was the
first to come on board,” Aranel said. “We had
worked together for ages so it just seemed
logical to merge. Ophelia came along next. I
had seen her stuff on marketplace and
thought, ‘Hey..I bet we would work well
together,’ and I have to say it was a great
127 ICON magazine
choice. After a while, we started talking about
all the "closures" happening in SL, the events,
etc. along with Bethany and Rico. We had
discussed how maintaining a business gets
rough, especially when real life issues come
along. We decided that working together
might be a good option for us, since we all
bring something different to the table. It came
easy since none of us seemed obsessed with
having our own "brand" and re-branding the
entire store even came into discussion.”
Planning and talking about this venture started
in the early part of this year, but recently the
team has seen their dreams come to life.
“It took quite some time for things to come to
fruition so I suppose we "really" started working
on it around July,” Aranel explained. “We had
discussed the way the economy was affecting
stores in Second Life as of late. It wasn't pretty.
In an attempt to be proactive, we discussed
starting an event but that idea quickly was
thrown out. We are creators, not planners;
however, if there is a planner out there that
wants to work with us, we are totally open to
that.”
The focus and the drive of this team is really
helping them get through any tough times
that come their way and they are always
working on new and exciting ventures.
“We spend as much time on this as we can,”
Aranel said. “Even if we all aren't working on
something at once, there is always two or
three of us teaming up. We have few new
ideas and promotions that are in the works
but I'd rather keep them a surprise, for now.”
With the positive outlook, focus and drive, we
know we can expect great things from this
team partnership. Aranel says that this dream
team of designers couldn’t have made it this
far without the support the SL community
has shown. And she expresses this sentiment:
“To every *BOOM* customer, every blogger
who ever blogged a *BOOM* product, to the
rest of the team, to the malls who invited us
to be a part of their venue, to the event
coordinators who allowed us to participate
and to everyone in general who in any way
supported us in any way. From the bottom of
my heart, thank you.”

When I first joined Second Life in 2006, Relay
For Life was still in its infancy in this virtual
world. As the years have gone by, Relay For
Life has grown by leaps and bounds through
the hard work and dedication of hundreds of
people.
For those of you not familiar with this
international fundraiser, Relay For Life is an
event designed to celebrate survivorship and
raise money for research and programs for the
American Cancer Society. The American
Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating
cancer as a major health problem. Second Life
expanded this real life event into a 6 month
program. The American Cancer Society’s
motto – The Official Sponsor Of Birthdays.
Each February in Second Life, Relay For Life
launches its annual fund raising drive. We
have all seen the kiosks, purchased the
fashions designed each year, attended concerts
and auctions. And like me, you donated your
Lindens and patted yourself on the back for
your generosity and humanitarian effort, all the
time naive to the true value of this drive. Ten
months ago that all changed for me.
Ten months ago a skin irritation turned into
sleepless nights and loss of appetite. That
suddenly turned into jaundice and a trip to the
doctor where we were rerouted to the
Emergency Room. It was there I learned my 87
year-old mother had Pancreatic Cancer. Life as
we knew it changed.
At my mother’s side I saw her deal with
doctors, tests, daily radiation treatments and
weekly chemo sessions. For three months it
seemed her life was not her own, but belonged
to the medical community. Throughout it all
she was stoic and confident the treatments
would be successful and the cancer would be
surgically removed. When we learned the
cancer not only grew in size but had spread to
other organs, my mother accepted this as her
time.
From the beginning of her journey to the end,
there was an amazing support system available
to cater to my mother’s every need. During the
moments I had to myself I discovered a support
system for my needs in an unlikely place –
Second Life. I discovered a Caregivers group
within Second Life that consisted of people in
the many stages their own personal battles.
One had multiple loved ones touched by
Cancer. Another woman had lost her husband
only two weeks prior and came to the group
not only for support for herself, but to offer her
experiences to those of us just beginning the
journey. Even I, still so new to all that was
controlling my world, could offer help and
guidance to one just beginning the journey.
My eyes were opened for the first time to the
immenseness of Relay For Life in our pixel
world. It is more than a simple five second
transaction that magically transmits to an
unseen charity. More than a pretty dress or
animated chair you buy in a heavily lagged
SIM. It is the hand reaching out when you are
too tired to continue. It is the survivor who
stands tall before you whose life was saved by
modern medicine. It is the person beside you
who believes one person can make a
difference.
What Relay For Life represents is thousands of
hours of hard work organizing and
implementing this mammoth undertaking.
Men and women who survived Cancer, whose
battle still rages on, who cared for a Cancer
patient or lost a loved one to a disease that not
only eats away at your body but can robs you
of your dignity. Even when their own burdens
are heavy, Relay For Life enables them to bring
others comfort.
In 2005, Relay For Life raised $5,000 US
dollars. When last I looked 2011 totals,
donations were over $373,000 US dollars.
Today, Relay For Life means more to me than a
few Lindens or one-of-a-kind fashion designs.
My mother lost her battle on June 3rd, but
mine has just begun. Not only will I fight to
honor my mother’s memory, but to help your
spouses, partners, parents, siblings and friends
live a better life and enjoy many more
birthdays.
Should you cross paths with one of the many
dedicated individuals who make Relay For Life
a first life priority in Second Life, take a
moment to thank them. Take the time to walk
in their shoes and realize their fight will never
end until Cancer is eliminated.

"ENJOY YOURSELF FOR A NIGHT OUT"
ENT ED I TOR ' S NOTE
Wow summer has flown by and we are getting ready to head
back to school and roll into Fall. Where has 2011 gone? It
only seems like a month ago that I was recommending taking
an SLacation and here we are now heading back to work. The
wonderful thing about Second Life is that we can take time off
and enjoy our surroundings at any time.
This month we have three more exciting DJs sharing their hot
music, so take in one of their sets and enjoy yourself for a
night out. If you want to really hear music from all over the
world then check out the Scoutlounge where DJs from all over
the world come to spin for Second Life audiences. For those
who love live performances, catch a show with this month's
interview Tone Uriza the "Big Daddy of Blues".
We are happy this month to feature Campus d'Art which is a
hedonistic paradise for any art lover with over 27 galleries
and art exhibits to be found.

There's something to be said for picking up a
guitar, stepping on stage in a virtual world and
singing your heart out. This is what the
audience gets every time they attend a live
performance by Tone Uriza. Tone's smooth
blues sound and soothing voice keep fans
coming back and have pushed him to become
one of the most well-known live artists on the
grid.
A computer technician and musician in real
life, Second Life seemed only a natural fit for
Tone when his long time friend introduced him
to this world in February 2007. “A friend that
used to play drums in my band emailed me
and said that he had a club on the internet
where I could go and watch him play,” Tone
explained. “That intrigued me so much I joined
right away. Being a computer tech since the
late seventies SL made sense to me right away
and I hit the virtual ground running. I got
bookings right away and haven't stopped
since.”
Averaging about eight shows per week, Tone
spends much of his time in Second Life on the
stage, though he has felt a shift in Second Life's
world for live performers. “I play in many
139 ICON magazine
different venues in SL,” Tone says.
“Unfortunately, SL has been going through
some growing pains and I am not playing in SL
as much anymore as I was a couple of years
ago. You see I am self-employed as a musician
and computer tech. I have to get paid in order
to continue doing it. There aren't many paying
opportunities in SL these days.”
Tone is one of SL's true musicians, only him and
his guitar, no backing tracks or recordings of
any kind. His work inspired by other musicians
in both real life and across the grid. “Hearing
something that makes me sit up and take
notice is where I get my inspiration,” he says.
“If it makes me pay attention I will listen for
inspiration. Also a great vocalist that makes me
feel something deep.”
Of the many memories and encounters he has
had while working his way to different venues
and to different areas, Tone has several that
truly stand out. “My favorite performance
memory was New Years Eve 2007,” Tone
recalls. “We had a a really great time when I
and Jimmyt49 Dukes did shows at my place for
my group, both called Blues Heaven. That was
one of the best night I have had in SL. The
141 ICON magazine
place was packed and all my good friends
were there.”
Though he has no intentions of leaving the
music world or cutting back on his performance
schedule, Tone has begun take up other
ventures of notice, including working with video
in Second Life.
“I have been working a lot with the video
aspects of SL,” he notes. “Mainly with live flash
video streaming into SL for my performances
allowing me to mix the realities. I am also
doing that with MetaMixTV.com for a live show
of my band in the real world from a venue here
in my hometown into my own replica I built of
the SL venue of the same name; The
Boondocks Lounge. That has been a regular
show for us for 3 years now in SL and RL; every
first Saturday of every month from 8:30 pm to
10:00 pm SL time.”
Tone's classic sound is here to stay, as he has
truly made a name for himself in the sea of
performers in SL. To new artists and people
trying to break into the music business, Tone
has one word of advice, “Expect nothing and
you'll get everything you need.”

Some live to create art, some live to
collect art. Cecilia Delacroix does
both. Her Campus d'Art located in the
heart of the Islandia Canal District is
truly any art lover’s paradise. The
Campus d' Art contains a 4-floor
museum called the Musee d'Art
Classique which began it all, twenty
other galleries, 27 exhibits total, over
800 paintings, photographs and
sculptures featuring both SL/RL artists.
The campus houses a sculpture plaza,
a coffee house, concert hall, park, and
canals. That is just the start of this
hedonistic paradise for art lovers.
The original museum the Musee d'Art
Classique began Cecilia's art journey 5
years ago in Second Life. It features
art by many real life artists and bills
itself as a Museum of Contemporary
Classic Works. There are six to seven
exhibitions housed in this lovely
building, including a collection of
pieces by Piet Modrian. Other
exhibitions include Scottish Tartans,
The Quilts of Gee's Bend and Abstract
Art: Early-Mid 20th Century. I spent
several hours just looking around at all
the contemporary art, and being such
a lover of fabrics and textiles, my
favorites were the tartan and the quilt
ICON magazine 144
exhibitions. They both captivated me.
It is not just the art on the walls that is
interesting on the campus. Even the
architecture of the buildings is a work
of art. The Lake House Gallery was
created by Valradica Vale and is an
exact replica of the house from the
2003 movie "Lake House". Completely
made of glass and weathered metal it
looks out over the water and has a
stunning view. It houses an exhibition
of natural oil paintings by the RL artist
Ritchey Sealy. His moniker in Second
Life is Ritchey Jacobus. He creates
colorful impressionistic paintings of his
surroundings mostly painted on
location. His RL career has spanned
over 30 years and he has displayed in
several galleries including the
Queensland Gallery. Sharing this work
in SL is just an extension of what he
does everyday in RL.
If you're not a museum or formal
gallery setting type of person and enjoy
a more casual atmosphere there are
several exhibitions for that you may
enjoy. There is the Outdoor Exhibit
along the canal and the Guest Artist
Walk, which is not usually shown on
the map. The guest artist walk currently
features an exhibition entitled "Second
Deco" which highlights builds and
architecture in Second Life with Art
Deco motifs built by Melusina Parkin.
While the Outdoor Exhibit along the
gallery is a casual art exhibit that you
can stroll through canal side or sit and
enjoy on nearby seating. The
illustrations of Charley Harper are
currently on display. These works have
a fun pop art feel to them. Charley
was best known for his simplified and
stylized silk screen prints of birds and
wildlife. If you love whimsical playful
art these is one artist you should take
the time to check out.
Many of the works on the Campus
d'Art are for sale and can be taken
home to decorate your walls. Other
pieces are there only for educational
purposes. You can visit the Ancient
ICON magazine 146
Grounds Coffeehouse where coffee art
posters, pastries, espresso and chess
await you. You can spend some time
relaxing taking it all in and listen to the
smooth jazz with a friend. Maybe visit
the Cecilia Park and Ampitheatre
landscaped by Hylee Bekkers.
However if you're a serious art lover
there is so much here to see and do
you will spend the entire day exploring
the many galleries inclusing the Rothko
Gallery, Gallerie Bella Vida, and the
Kinetic Sculpture Pavilion & Sculpture
Plaza to name just a small portion of
what there is to see. I hope you take the
time to spend a few hours at Campus
d'Art taking it all in.

one place - Scoutlounge. This tropical beach
paradise is friendly, warm, exotic, and has
some of the hippest music from around the
world playing 7 days a week 24 hours a day!
Billed as the oldest house music club in
Second Life, Scout Lounge 3.0 has been
open and playing music since 2007. The
owner, Lexx Runo, is serious about his music
claiming both a passion in both Second Life
and Real Life. "I am not a 'laptop' DJ, not
saying it is wrong to be one, but I am using
real hardware. I use a Pioneer DJM800

I'm not sure what half of that is but I can tell
you that the music at Scoutlounge will make
any fan of house music gleeful. It will even
make a person who is not a fan move their
hips.
This trendy hot spot lives under three large A-
symmetrical canopies covering a lower
wooden decked dance floor. Above it on the
second riser is a lounge area to relax and sip
a drink or two until the music invades your
body again and you just need to dance. If
you are a person who prefers a more
intimate space to spend alone time with that
special someone, all you need do is head
down to the beach. There you will find
relaxing lounge chairs, beach towels and
lapping waves. Palm trees sway all about the
tropical paradise while stone tiki and buddha
statues give a calming zen like ambiance.
The exotic local was built by German
designer Anu Daviau.
Scoutlounge prides itself on its international
community. They have DJs from over 50
countries playing at any time of the day.
Their guests come from over 95 countries
and they all have one thing in common -
they all LOVE house music. Scoutlounge's
mission statement is to bring the DJ out of
the booth and closer to the people who listen
and enjoy the music. Only a few DJs ever
attained global recognition. The internet
ICON magazine 152
brought them global fame, but it took them
away from the crowds and the direct
feedback they received. Platforms like
Second Life have allowed DJs to interact with
the crowd virtually, get direct feedback and
gain international attention. "Real DJs
perform live at their homestudios and get to
see their audience at the virtual Scoutlounge
club in Second Life, chat and talk to them
and get direct feedback. At the same time,
people using our online radio stream can
enjoy a live performing DJ online."
If that was not enough, you don't even have
to sign into Second Life to enjoy the music
and the party. Lexx has worked with his team
to create a way to broadcast the party in SL
to everyone out there via Facebook and their
website. Or you can join in every Thursday
night to watch the movers and shakers as
they relax on the beach and take in all the
latest that is happening in house from
around the world. Put on something hot,
grab your sexy significant other, and do not
forget your sandals as you make your way to
Scoutlounge located on the Swiss Media Sim.
We will see you there booging it up with all
the other lovely ladies and fine fellows.

DJ Jokker Streeter
Jokker discovered Second Life on a music
website, through an article about the live music
and that it peaked his curiosity. After reading
up on it he joined and came inworld. He went
to live music shows and was hooked. Soon he
joined a live band and played with them for
almost 9 months.
After leaving them he started DJing at clubs
and found his passion. He enjoys playing music
that makes people want to get up and dance,
music that brings back old memories and
music that just makes them fall in love with the
person they are dancing with. He loves music
that puts his listeners in a better place and
makes them smile.
He plays Rock/Blues/Metal/Classic
Rock/Ballads/Country and most anything else
that people request. He generally don't use a
playlist, just feel the crowd and play what he
think they want to hear. He picks and spins on
the fly.

When Bren is not DJing, he spends his time
exploring and indulging in his many other
interests in Second Life and enjoys working with
others: from creating custom websites for
brands within SL and being an estate concierge
at The Grove Country Club Estates to tending

While Bren's interests and passions may change
daily, his constant is his love of music and he's

Today as I sat in my cozy, yet cluttered loft, I started to think about how I started all this? What made start a blog? Who inspired me?
Ah, I remember!! The person responsible for all of this is one of my closest, dearest friends. Her name is Lolli Onyett and she is absolutely super!
Ms. Lolli “Barbie Girl” Onyett has this incredible sense of style. I know what you’re thinking. “Elise, there are so many stylish people in this world—why this chick?” I mean yeah, there are so many fantastic bloggers out there, so why this girl?
Lolli has her own unique sense of style, is an amazing photographer and she remains a big inspiration to me to this day. She teaches me what she can and I really do try, but sometimes you have to just leave it to the professionals.
Her adventure into Second Life began back in 2007. She was a gamer of sorts and she had participated in other 2D games, nothing as sophisticated as SL. It was the fashion she enjoyed more than anything else, jokingly admitting it's like having her own dress up Barbie doll in a virtual world. She started
following blogs, such as “Second Life on the D List” and "Juicy-bomb” to keep up with the latest trends and updates, but when she came across “Brinksie” that’s when it all changed. Lolli knew that blogging and photography was

her new love in this virtual fashion Mecca and it was Brinksie who inspired her to get creative and discover what makes her different from everyone else.
Brinksie’s blog not only gave her ideas on what to and what not to wear, but more importantly, how to make sure your pictures made people
go “wow”. Photography and the overall look of the pictures were more important to her than the fashion itself. Yes, understanding that one always goes with the other, but essentially what draws you to look at the actual picture? Learning from various bloggers, models, designers and fashionistas, Lolli has learned to be her own Fashion Icon.
Lolli Onyett continues to be one of my very own Fashion and Photography ICONS because she is as real as it gets - a sweet person with incredible talent. She continues to inspire me every day and I have learned a lot from her.
It’s nice to finally have a chance to really get to know someone—what brought them here, what inspires them, what makes them tick, where do they want to be, where do they want to go. If we took the time to stop and talk to people, our worlds would be so much happier. I would like to offer up one suggestion to everyone who might be reading this: stop and share a smile. Make a friend and take the time to get to know them, the real person behind the avatar and you too might learn something that might change your whole entire outlook on SL as you know it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my column, Elise:Confidential. I look forward to being able to share more with you, learn with you and discover more of myself in the process. <3

HHEERREEI am not tremendously technically inclined. I use Apple products exclusively because they look pretty, I plug them in, they go. I have frequent fits of rage when Second Life crashes and I have to install yet another upgrade and figure out again how to tweak settings so my avatar doesn’t look like the Crypt Keeper. There are a zillion great builder's features in the SL menu but for those of us who don’t build, why isn’t there an uncomplicated, fashion friendly version of the viewer? If only Linden Labs would adopt the Apple approach and give us something that is idiot-proof and as crash free as possible.
With this in mind I set out to try as many of the other third-party viewers as possible in hopes of finding one that was easier on my system than the SL viewer. I’m a simple girl, I don’t need to know how to debug anything. Just tell me how to make shoes appear on my feet without toes poking out and I’m a happy resident.
The first viewer I tried was Phoenix, number
one on the list of Linden Labs approved third-party viewers ranked in order of stability. Compared to the SL viewer, this runs like a cheetah. It took me a while to familiarize myself with the layout. Instead of a drop down menu on the right side of the window, your inventory, search and maps are organized in a task bar along the bottom of the screen. Each of the other viewers also use this layout so once you’ve used one, the rest are interchangeable. Phoenix comes pre-loaded with environment settings for every occasion and many build features, none of which interest me in the slightest. Unfortunately, what I see onscreen looks dreadful, everything is pixellated and to view anything smoothly I need to zoom right in until I’m up the nostrils of my avatar.
Next I tried the Firestorm-Beta. Well, I tried to try the Firestorm-Beta. I was able to run it for about ten minutes before it crashed; subsequent attempts resulted in the ugliest images I’ve ever witnessed, my hair refused to rezz properly resulting in weird triangles
WWrriitttteenn bbyy MMaarrvveell MMoorraannii
sprouting out of the top of my horrifically eyeless head. Even when it began to work I quit out; the sight of my carefully dressed and coiffed avatar looking like an Etch-A-Sketch escapee was too upsetting.
Did I miss a memo about Kirstens viewer not being supported or does it just hate my computer? It immediately crashed when opened and continued to display the spinning rainbow ball of boredom each time I attempted to launch. Likewise Singularity; no matter how many times I installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, force quit and restarted my computer, I was unable to get it past the log-in page.
Because I’m married to my iPad I tried Pocket Metaverse, a text-based client. It’s only use is to chat with friends and look at my inventory without being able to move or organize objects. For the sake of research, I tried the Restrained Love Viewer. As I have yet to engage in any activity which would require me to use the RLV, it’s only advantage is that it’s quicker than the other viewers because it’s not as robust. I also tried to use the Inertia/Snowglobe viewer. This was as difficult to navigate as the SL viewer, operates sluggishly on my machine, and is prone to big, fat crashes.
Undaunted, I soldiered on, determined to find a way to get in-world without having a tantrum. The Dolphin viewer was designed with water and vehicle enthusiasts in mind but since I don’t go near the water except to lounge in a bikini, I
failed to test those features. On my machine Dolphin runs faster than any other viewer I tried save Imprudence. Dolphin and Imprudence are the most user-friendly viewers for a tech-challenged idiot like myself. I’ve just finished purging my machine of all other viewers, including the SL Viewer. Although my in-world environment doesn’t look as lovely through these viewers as through the SL Viewer, at least they run without crashing. I would rather look at something a little pixellated than have time to go make myself a sandwich between teleporting to destinations.
