Washington State Womens’s Commission (WSWC) New website is up at www.WSWC.wa.gov Nine commissioners from a variety of backgrounds all over the

state Are there differences when women are in leadership roles? –

women tend to be “future focused” on issues such as education, climate change, and Planned Parenthood with a more collaborative approach; we have had two women governors and currently have two women senators

Challenges – mandate, but no funding; the Washington State Historical Society has some funding for the 2020 Centennial Celebration of women voting; WSWC is supporting

Economic Opportunity and Gender Equity committee meeting schedules are set on the website, starting in January, with ICSEW on the agenda

Introduction of Late Arrival Attendees – Erika SummersDiversity & Inclusion - Leading with Racial Equity She works with school districts to support equity goals and

specifically teachers of color (90% white women teachers and 50% students of color) – addresses the “cultural mismatch”

Starts with honoring indigenous lands – Squaxin and Nisqually 80% of Native American people history is pre 1900, and a lot of

districts are revising the Native American history being taught Agreements: Stay engaged; experience discomfort; speak your

Meeting Minutestruth; expect and accept non-closure; intent and impact (assume best intent and own your impact when you mess up)

Consider what the long-term legacy is going to be The high school graduation rate for Native American students is

58% Lead with racial equity with a race-conscious lens Race is an intersection of multiple pieces to include gender

identify, sexual orientation, religion, class, ability, immigrant status, age, and gender identity

PodCast – “The Daily” by the New York Times “Racism’s Punishing Reach”

Racial Equity Myths: Program strategy add-on; it’s only about race; Content Area; Romantic (the “cool” thing to do)

Racial Equity Is: Removing predictability of success and failure related to race; interrupting inequitable practices; discovering and cultivating talents and interests that every human possesses; raise awareness to recognize patterns

Leadership needs to create a climate where disruption of the status quo is welcomed

See the world beyond our personal lenses As recently as 2000, residents of US colonies could not vote

Healthy Eating through the Holidays – Introduced by Dana Bowen Be our own best caregiver Develop a mindset for staying true to yourself and goals Holiday blues are a real phenomenon with feelings of loneliness

and a sense of a lack of fulfillment Have reasonable expectations, spend less, have less ambitious

plans Get enough sleep, exercise, and nutritious food Focus on past holiday successes and stressors and focus on the

positives (what to keep and what to eliminate) The clearer you are about how you want to feel can help guide

choices to optimize the holiday experience Self-care for the holidays: meditate (incite timer is a free app to

help with meditation), self-massage, get outside, exercise, be grateful, get adequate rest

Healthy eating: make lunch the main meal of the day when the digestive capacity is at its peak, and have a lighter and earlier dinner; put a mint in a mouth when done; sit next to other healthier eaters; eat slowly; choose indulgences; warm water or herbal/ginger tea help with digestion; pulse between festive meals and simple meals; eat more greens; allow 12+ hours between dinner and breakfast

The Successes and Coming Challenges of Health Care Reform From the Office of the Insurance Commissioner Regulates 2400 companies in the state of Washington Relies on consumers to be able to do their job – relies on

consumer complaints The majority of issues are around health insurance The individual market is most critical, as there is no employer

support #1 issue in mid-term elections was pre-existing conditions in

health insurance 14% to 6% drop in uninsured as a result of the Affordable Care

Act Get away from politics and get to what is going to help people Reduction of costs is due to expansion of the Medicaid program A successful program is a combination of good risk and bad risk Short term medical doesn’t cover maternity or pre-existing

conditions Women have been leading the charge on health coverage

reform What can be done to stabilize the costs of healthcare, such as

pharmaceuticals and hospital costs? This should be addressed, first

The Affordable Care Act was designed to promote competition
