ieee and orcid implementation
DESCRIPTION
From the May 2014 ORCID Outreach Meeting, https://orcid.org/content/orcid-outreach-meeting-and-codefest-may-2014 ORCID at professional associations For scholarly societies, ORCID can help tie together siloed internal systems, including manuscript submission, membership management, author and reviewer databases, and conferences, improving an organizations ability to serve its members. This session will offer a discussion of integration points, policy issues, data flow between systems, researcher participation, discovered opportunities, and demonstrations by societies and vendors. Moderator: Bernard Rous, Director of Publications, Association for Computing Machinery Presenters: Scott Moore, Director of Technology Services, Society for Neuroscience Reynold Guida, Director, Product Management, IEEE Gordon MacPherson, Director of Conference Quality, IEEE Mary Warner, Assistant Director, Publications, American Geophysical UnionTRANSCRIPT

IEEE Author Gateway Service
Because not all IEEE authors are not necessarily members, IEEE will offer authors an opportunity to register their ORCID or obtain an ORCID through its Author Gateway service
The Author Gateway service is IEEE’s communication portal to its primary authors (i.e. the lead author on the article)
Authors receive proofs, and other authoring-related news via the portal
An opportunity to expose ORCID to 50,000 authors annually (if they missed the ORCID during the peer review stage)

IEEE Member Profile Management Portal
IEEE currently re-designing its membership portal
~ 400,000 IEEE Members
Upon setting up their IEEE Member Profile, user will be offered opportunity to link to ORCID profile, if exists, or go to ORCID to create profile
Scheduled to be in service Q4 2014 or Q1 2015.

Authors are prompted to register for, or link, their ORCID

Challenge: IEEE’s decentralized conference publishing model
Dozens of paper management systems in use across IEEE’s 1,400+ annual conferences
Skeletal metadata collected at the conference paper level – need DTD and internal processing changes
Educational issue: engineering students submitting papers to conferences are not as familiar with ORCID as experienced academics who submit papers to journals

Commencing pilot program with preferred providers, beginning withEx Ordo

Content integrity concerns
Adjudicating issues relating to author behavior…
• Papers well outside of the stated subject matter scope of the conference
• Papers well outside of IEEE’s core engineering/technology subject areas
• Papers that are poorly or unintelligibly written
• Fraudulent content, e.g., machine-generated papers
• Plagiarism
What does this have to do with ORCIDs?
10
An ORCID can serve as a tool for studying an author’s publication history
• Enhancing the IEEE PAL (Prohibited Authors List)
• Contacting authors directly
• Data analysis: looking for behavioral patterns based on geography or field of interest
• Overall goal is education, not punishment: two-way communication between publisher and author is the key
