Sacrament of Baptism The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated the first Sunday of the Month directly following the 10 am Mass. One baptismal preparation class is required. The preparation class seeks to help parents understand the Rite of Baptism and to prepare and support

Today’s readings remind us of our constant need for heal-ing and of the salvation that can be found in Jesus. Job’s hopelessness in today’s First Reading may stir memories of our own moments of darkness, or may remind us of so many others who suffer from illness, poverty, or threat of violence. Jesus, who acted in the world as the Lord who heals the brokenhearted, showed us how he expects his disciples to care for people in need. Job, once a wealthy and highly respected man, now finds himself undone through no fault of his own. His oxen and asses were sto-len, lightning killed his sheep, and a great wind blew down his house while his kids were partying inside, and everyone was killed. Now he has come down with the worst case of boils that anyone could imagine! And he laments his very existence. The Gospel provides a coun-terpoint to Job’s lament as we learn more about the min-istry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present. On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in pray-er. He tells his disciples that they must be off to the near-by villages to preach. Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee. Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church contin-ues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical heal-ing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness. In today’s Gospel we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and di-rection from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives. As you reflect on today’s readings think about a time in your life when you might have felt like Job. What gave you hope and helped you to step out of that dark place?

He just is not able to continue this service. Don covers Wednesday daily Mass. Please prayerfully consider this service to our Lord. A sacristan provides the legwork to help other people wor-ship. He or she makes sure all the things necessary for the celebration of the liturgy are ready before Mass be-gins. This is known as a “behind the scenes” ministry. For this reason we ask you to prayerfully search your heart and soul and see if this is a ministry you are called to. Please call Pat, 503-654-5449 with questions or to ex-press your interest. Once Josephine was freed, she dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. According to law enforcement, some signs to look for include people who work and live in the same place, or who owe a debt to their employers or whose employers have control over their immigration documents. We actually have some good news to report. While pledges are still only at 44% of our needed goal, actual contri-butions are up about 13% over last year. Some of this is due to one-time only gifts. Cash flow continues to be a problem, though, so we urge as many parishioners as possible to set up electronic bank giving, or go through WeShare (link is on our web-site), so if you are away your Offertory donation still comes through. If you give electronically, please feel free to put an empty envelope in the Offertory basket and maybe add a blessing you are especially thankful for. We are thankful for all of you who are working so hard to make sure we have our Daily Bread.
