It may be the least noticed component of any sports field, but to the journalists, score-keepers and time-keepers who use it, the press box is critical.
When SUNY Oneonta wanted to better demonstrate its commitment to its teams, the school decided a more sophisticated, permanent solution was in order.

The goal
The school wanted to ensure the new press box was durable and secure, and at every corner represented the school and its passion for athletics.
The repurposed shipping container—rugged enough for transoceanic voyages—offered the flexibility and toughness necessary to do the job.

Custom design
The container-based press box—painted Red Dragons red—stands out against the green of the field and is vibrant on even the grayest of autumn days.
A rear door grants entry to the inside of the press box. The extended panels provide shelter for those approaching the box; when lowered, they secure it against mischief and thievery.

Accessible
The press box had to be large enough to comfortably accommodate time-keepers, score-keepers and their assistants, as well as journalists covering the game. The shipping container is large enough to fit them all.

High-impact safety glass helps protect the container while large, well-placed windows provide occupants with a 180-degree view of the action.
The container also is piped with Internet access and electricity to help personnel who depend on computers and the Internet to do their jobs.

The unit came with built-in ventilation and an HVAC unit, strong enough to control the inside temperature during the hottest or coldest of game days.

Ventilation
Access points allow various types of lifts to move the press box to other locations, should the school desire it. One benefit of using the container-based solution, however, is that the press box can withstand the harsh New York winters where previous solutions could not, and therefore stay in place all year long.
