Australia has also been involved other conflicts, World War 2, Korean War, Malayan Emergency, Vietnam War, Gulf Wars, East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq and many peace keeping missions. Over 100 000 men and women have been killed since Australia became a country in 1901.

Today as we think about the fallen, remember the stories you may have heard, remember families that have lost loved ones, think about the men and women who are currently serving in the Australian Defence Force and be thankful that when asked to serve, these men and women answered the call.” Emily Tallon

This week we bid a sad farewell to Mr Delaney, who has been relieving as our Deputy since the beginning of Term 2. We wish Mr Delaney well as he returns to his substantive position at Corowa HS and thank him for his contribution to the learning and wellbeing of HCS’s students and staff.

Yesterday HCS marked Remembrance Day with a small ceremony at school. Mel Devine read a speech explaining the importance of marking this special day in history and Blake Dakin read a poem written by Olive McKenzie highlighting the role Hillston locals played in the war (see inside for the full version of the poem).

While we marked this event at school, a group of students represented HCS at our town ceremony. Emily Tallon, as Primary School Captain, made a speech she had written about a student’s perspective of what this day means in 2019.

“Today we commemorate the ending of the fighting of World War 1, 101 years ago. 416 809 men enlisted into the armed forces during WW1. The cost to Australia was huge.

Over 60 000 were killed and a further 156 000 were wounded or taken prisoner.

As a young person in 2019 Remembrance Day means to me that we take some time to remember those people, whom I have never met, and try to think about things they may have gone through. Like, losing friends, working hard at protecting each other, being scared and worrying about family back home.

I can’t imagine what it was like for those soldiers, nurses, sailors and airmen who left Australia to go and fight to defend the freedoms that we

Kinder Transition

Pre-Kinder students participated in their final morning ses-sion of our Kinder Transition program this morning with activities based around the book ‘Elmer’. Next week we start our Friday sessions with students attending for a full day each Friday for the next 4 weeks.

SRC Melbourne Cup Day! It was fantastic to see so many students make an effort to dress up for Melbourne cup day last Tuesday. The students and staff looked amazing in their race attire and the horses that came in were very creative. During lunch time we held some horse races with the winners determined by the roll of the dice and not speed, which made for a great competition. Congratulations to the SRC student on their organisation and to all the students who received prizes for best decorated horse and outfits. Board Game Fun

Stage 4 students had the opportunity to play and provide feedback on each other’s board games in PDHPE. The board games were created to increase awareness and understanding about mental health.

Let’s Celebrate

Year 9/10 Food Technology students were given a design brief to

plan a menu and make a celebration cake for their choice of

theme. Students baked, assembled and decorated their fabulous

celebration cakes for varied age groups and purposes .

Count Us In Celebration Day

Our Choir celebrated Music Count Us In singing the program song 'We Are' along with more than half a million students singing the same song, on the same day, at the same time, an initiative of Music Australia. Secondary PASS Class Sports Coaching

In their current Unit the Secondary PASS class have been learn-ing about sports coaching session planning, coaching styles and transitions. We have been applying our skills learnt in theory into practise taking the opportunity to work with the Year 1 class to develop their aiming and shooting skills through a range of activities planned by the PASS class. This has been a very successful unit with the primary students making great progress with their skill development as the sec-ondary students improve their confidence in coaching and plan-ning coaching sessions. SCHOOL NEWS Rotations, Balances, Splits & Wheels!! The Secondary Advanced Gymnastics Group have enjoyed challenging themselves during sport on Fridays this term. The students have learned a wide range of new skills on the floor, beam, mini tramp, bars and trampoline. On the floor students experimented with balances in partners and groups, some rhythmic gymnastics using balls and hoops as well as Round offs, Cartwheels (one handed & no hands), Handstand balances (stag, split, pike). Students enjoyed using the Octo block which allowed them to develop backward walkovers and rotations providing support. On the Mini- tramp students extended their skills performing a range of aerial balances using the vault and the tramp. On the beam kids challenged themselves to transfer their floor skills to the beam performing Cartwheels, splits, chasses, hand stands and a range of balances. The students have enjoyed the challenge and the opportunity to participate in the advanced class this is an extension of their regular PDHPE lessons in which students have also been learning the fundamentals of gymnastics in their movement and composition unit. Hospital Visit

Year 5 & 6, SRC Members and School Captains

attended the town Remembrance Day Service which

was held in the Memorial Park on Monday 11th

Evans and George Sherwood, Dick Smith, the Hughes too, Have left their homes and sailed away across the ocean blue, C. Burker the loyal Frenchman, in answer to France’s call, Went forth to the Western battlefield where Frenchmen fight and fall, George Turton and Jack Nicholls, Bob Peters, Percy Wicks, Have gone to meet the German Hun and settle his knavish tricks, The Graham boys, Dick Latham, Bob Morant and Clifton Hill, The McCarthys, Horace Peevers, Mel Mckenzie from the mill, Les Vagg and Walter Beaupeurt (who as heroes passed away), Though they reached no field of battle, won no laurels in the fray, The Gordons and the Wilsons, Albert Hurst and Dennis Dunne, Have joined the dauntless army that will overthrow the Hun, Les McCabe and Joe McKenzie, Frank Hutchison, Jack Wright,

“Fitness, fun and friends”

Hillston Amateur Swimming Club

for all ages & abilities

When: Swimming Club Race nights are held every Thursday night at 5.15pm, Thursdays are for everyone, young, old, beginner or experienced swimmers—there are no limitations. Squads are held on Tuesdays for Swimmers who can complete a minimum of 25m freestyle unassisted from 4.15pm. (Commencing on 12th November 2020. Registration & Assessment of Swimmers: Thursday evening the 7th of November at the Hillston Swimming Pool @ 5.00pm, this will be followed by an assessment of all swimmers between 5.30pm-6.30pm and a free BBQ. Swimming Club membership fees: $85.00 per Family (includes swimmers insurance during swimming club activities- Club time trials and squads) Registration does not cover pool entry, families/individuals must purchase a season ticket from the Carrathool shire council.
