Christmas Beatitudes – David Rhys Williams

For this blessed season let us worship at the altar of joy, for to miss the joy of Christmas is to miss its holiest secret. Let us enter into the spiritual delights which are the natural heritage of childlike hearts.Let us withdraw from the cold and barren world of prosaic fact, if only for a season: That we may warm ourselves by the fireside of fancy, and take counsel in the wisdom of poetry and legend.Blessed are they who have vision enough to behold a guiding star in the dark mysterywhich girdles the earth; Blessed are they who have imagination enough to detect the music of celestial voices in the midnight hours of life;Blessed are they who have faith enough to contemplate a world of peace and justice in the midst of present wrong and strife; Blessed are they who have greatness enough to become as little children;Blessed are they who have zest enough to take delight in simple things; Blessed are they who have wisdom enough to know that the kingdom of heaven is very close at hand, and that all may enter in who have eyes to see and ears to hear and hearts to understand.

Maria Wiegenlied – Max Reger

Carol – Once in Royal David’s City

2

Once in royal David’s cityStood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her babyIn a manger for his bed;

So may we when life turns hardFind in love our stay and guard.

Shepherds came to see this wonder,And to kneel in holy awe

At the lowly stable mangerWhere the infant lay on straw. So may we this happy morn

Honor every child that’s born

From afar three magi journeyedTo that stable rude and bare,To pay homage to the infant

Offering gifts both rich and rare.So may we our gifts bestow,Whether we be high or low.

In that happy Christmas spirit,Hear the angels from on highSing their ancient salutations:

Joy’s a gift you cannot buy.So may we with heart that sings,

Share the truth this season brings.

Anthem The Angel Gabriel – Carol

The Story of Christmas Revs Jacks and Buehrens with our children and families Recitatives / Glory to God from Messiah – George F. Handel Kate Offer, soprano

The First Nowell the angel did say was toCertain poor shepherds, in fields as they lay, inFields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a

Cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Nowell, No-well, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star, shiningIn the east beyond them far, and

To the earth it gave great light, andSo it continued both day and night.

Nowell, No-well, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel.

And by the light of that same star, threeMagi came from country far; to

Seek a king was their intent, and toFollow the star wherever it went.

Nowell, No-well, Nowell, Nowell, born is the king of Israel.

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright.Round yon virgin mother and child,

holy infant so tender and mild.Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight,Glories stream from heaven afar,

heavenly hosts sing, “Alleluia!”Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night, child of God, love’s pure light.Radiant beams from thy holy face,

with the dawn of redeeming grace.Sleep in heavenly peace

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King;Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!”

Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heaven-born Prince of peace! Hail the son of righteousness!Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing on his wings;

Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die,Born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Recessional Carols

Joy to the world! The Lord is come. Let earth receive her king;Let every heart prepare him room and heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! The savior reigns. Let all their tongues employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations provethe glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love,

And wonders of his love, and wonders, and wonders of his love.

Sunday: December 28TRANSFORMATIONS

The Rev. John Buehrens and Young Adults

Sunday: January 4DEDICATION and RECONCILIATIONThe Rev. John Buehrens, preaching

Beginning Sunday, January 18 from 6PM to 7PM, Chapel

Church After Dark is a contemporary, experimental evening service beginning mid-January. We’ll be hosting a variety of acoustic musicians, some from within our church and some bringing their

talents from beyond our walls. The setting will be a simple, candle-lit service in the round where people are invited to participate in the whole service or simply rest in a contemplative, intimate atmosphere. The Church After Dark service is coordinated by Intern Minister Cindy Pincus ([email protected]).
