Gospel Acclamation

Consecration Prayer to the Immaculate Heart I, (your name) , a repentant sinner, renew and ratify today in your hands, O Immaculate Mother, the vows of my Baptism. I renounce Satan and resolve to follow Jesus Christ even more closely than before. Mary, I give you my heart. Please set it on fire with love for Jesus. Make it always attentive to his burning thirst for love and for souls. Keep my heart in your most pure Heart that I may love Jesus and the members of his Body with your own perfect love. Mary, I entrust myself totally to you: my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions. Please make of me, of all that I am and have, whatever most pleases you. Let me be a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest possible glory to God. If I fall, please lead me back to Jesus. Wash me in the blood and water that flow from his pierced side, and help me never to lose my trust in this fountain of love and mercy. With you, O Immaculate Mother — you who always do the will of God — I unite myself to the perfect consecration of Jesus as he offers himself in the Spirit to the Father for the life of the world. Amen.

Death XXII Toward the end of the mass remembrances are often given; these are called “eulogies” and one or two people are selected to give personal remembrance of the dead. These should be short and well prepared in advance, and only one or at most two short ones are permitted in this parish. I discourage the “open mike” at the mass, because it is really appropriate to the vigil, but also because most people feel uncomfortable going up to the Ambo to speak. Following the eulogy there is the “song of farewell” which is sung as the celebrant burns incense around the casket. This is an ancient ceremony and helps us to picture the person’s soul moving toward God. By liturgical law there is no incense or song of farewell at a funeral where cremains are present. The mass ends abruptly after a prayer of commendation in which we present the dead to God, and preparation is made to transport the body to the cemetery. The third movement of the Catholic funeral is the burial. The mass actually does not end at the Church, and the final blessing is only given at the grave. Many customs have appeared around the grave, but the service itself is very short and to the point. The “highlight” is the praying of the Our Father preceded by the prayer that speaks of committing his or her body to the earth “for we are dust and to dust we shall return.” After the final blessing the coffin may be lowered into the grave, and people often throw flowers or other mementos into the grave as a way of expressing their farewell and their grief. I have often noted at the grave, especially at a very sad funeral of a child or a young person, as the coffin is lowered the pain subsides in the assembly. There is finality and a sense that all things have been accomplished. IHM Pray for us. Fr. Jerry

Padre Jerry

Stewardship Corner Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead he is trying to help us see that everything we think we

own is really a gift from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.

IHM Stewardship Garden Ministry Report Part I of II

This Ministry has again been blessed with many hours of vol-unteer time & talent resulting in the largest vegetable pro-duction in our 3rd year. Since May 31st thru August 30th 2013 we have donated approximately 3, 354 lbs. of fresh vegetables to st. Vencent de Paul’s Friday food Panty. Our crops include tomatoes, Squash, Zucchini, Peppers, Swiss Chard, Radishes, Lettuce, Beans, Watermelon, Honeydew, Cucumber, & Basil.

Our Garden survived the demise of all but three community gardens sanctioned by the Contra Costa Master Gardeners and U.C. Davis, a testament to our methods, volunteers & suc-cess.
