Before coming out to the Discovery Zone why not introduce yourself to some of the cool words we will be using.

variable – any item, factor, or condition that can be controlled or changed.
If I walk I use less energy than if I run. So the speed that I move is a variable for the amount of energy I use.
So variables can change. Many times you have
control of it, but sometimes you do not!

We can change the amount of energy
we use if we walk or run. So the

The sky is variable since sometimes it is cloudy, or sunny, or rainy, or snowy….

There are many ways to record data or information!
fair test – You conduct a fair test by making sure that you change one thing or factor at a time while keeping all other things or conditions the same.
Maria wants to test how high different balls will bounce so a fair test for Maria will only change the type of balls tested.

Only the type of ball should change everything else
should be the same.
What would be some things that wouldn’t
change in Maria’s experiment for a fair test?
1. How hard you let it go.2. The floor it bounces on.3. How aired up it is!4. The height you drop it from.5. Can you think of anything
else? I can’t!

She treated the control mouse the way she usually did so she could compare the others who got medicine to it.
The control mouse gave us something to compare the test mouse to. We now know how the medicine changed the test mouse!

The farmer wants to know how giving some crops less fertilizer will change them.
