CONGRATULATIONS

Well done to Georgia, Lilly, Della and Kody

for being a part of the successful team that

won the Victorian State Division 2 Under 12

Championships on the weekend. There is a

great write up in the Bendigo Advertiser

with further pictures and information.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

MUSIC IS FUN

Last Friday was another great Music is Fun

concert. All of our students enjoyed the

songs, dancing, actions, humour, costumes

and props involved. Was great to see everyone up and

involved and just having fun.

A big pat on the back to our 24 students who were involved

in songs as singers, musicians and general performers. They

were magnificent! We might have unearthed a couple of

stars of the future!

Thanks to Mrs. Caldwell for her time in preparing the

students, organising practises where required and

organising music and lyrics for all grades to practice in the

week before the concert.

Thanks also to Jill and Rob Charlton for the use of the Mini

Bus to have our performers there a little earlier to prepare

with the concert band.

NATIONAL SCHOOL’S TREE DAY

Last Thursday our students were involved in the

National Tree Day activities. It was great to hear that

some school families took part in the family planting

day on Sunday. The item on WIN News that covered the

student planting can be found at

https://www.facebook.com/WINNewsBendigo

FRUIT TREES

Fruit trees ordered were delivered and picked up today.

Many thanks to those who have ordered trees for

supporting this fundraiser. The school has raised $575

from the Fruit Tree Drive.

Thanks to PVF for helping with the sorting and

organising today.

PARENT OPINION SURVEY 2017

Each year schools across Victoria conduct a Parent

Opinion Survey to gather feedback about their school.

The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered

by the Department of Education and Training that is

conducted across the parent community at each school.

It is designed to assist our school in gaining an

understanding of parents’ perception of school climate,

student engagement and relationships with our parent

community. Our school will use the survey results to

help inform and direct future school planning and

Page 3: Important dates: August 21 MARC Van 22 Book Week Dress Up ...€¦ · Callum – For showing persistence when working with more challenging multiplication equations. SCHOOL VALUES

improvement strategies.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete.

The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the

period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August.

All school families will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are

anonymous.

A link to the survey was distributed to families yesterday via a letter and also by email.

The survey results will be reported back to our School Council at the October meeting and to parents via the

Annual Report. Last year we used the survey results to assist in the development of our 2017 Annual

Implementation Plan.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS

Below, are the two stories, written by Skyla and Bella, that were chosen to be included in The Vox Bendigo

Book 2017 - Young Writers Anthology as part of the Bendigo Writers Festival.

The Spy Branch

By Skyla Cairney

I quickly climbed up the tree hoping that my brother would not have seen me. “James is on to me! I repeat:

James is on to me!” I cried into the walkie-talkie. I stopped and sat still on the highest branch on the tree

that would support me. The branch on the tree we call the spy tree.

My friend Emily and I were on a mission to see why my older brother James was always asking Mum if his

friend Harry could come over, and why he was always invited over to James’s house.

“I saw him run out of the room” said Emily. “He almost saw me too. I’ll meet you back at the branch.”

“So do you have any clues?” I asked when we were both at the branch.

“They are writing on a piece of paper” explained Emily.

“They could be writing a book” I suggested. “But the short story competition at his school was weeks ago.”

“I’ll go and get more clues. You stay here and take notes”

“Got it!”

“They have a computer!” Emily cried after a minute or two, “And I think they’re on Wikipedia.”

“Extraordinary find!” I exclaimed. “Do you know what they are looking at on it? Dogs? Buildings? Craft?”

“I’m afraid not.”

“See anything else?”

“Pens, pencils, rubbers, a folder…”

“Wait, a folder?” I interjected.

“Yes, a red one. It also has a massive blue sticker on it.”

“That’s his homework folder!” I shouted so loudly into the walkie-talkie that James overheard me from

Emily’s walkie talkie.

“James just saw me.” Emily whispered.

“Come back to the tree now” I said

Emily ran back up to the tree and climbed back to me as fast as she could. “Let’s have a talk and see if we

can solve the problem” I said to Emily when she got back.

“Good idea!” Emily said as she reached out to get a chocolate bar for the both of us from a box that we

kept lollies and chocolates in on a branch above us.

“I think they are doing homework” I said.

“I know they are doing homework” Emily said.

“So what are they doing it on?”

Suddenly the tree shook and we looked down. James was climbing up the tree. “Oh no, he must have

followed you!”

“What should we do?” I asked. “Tell my Mum?”

“I don’t know, Bella,” she said as James arrived at the top of the tree.

“What are you two doing?” James asked.

“Nothing.” I said shaking.

“Hey James,” Emily asked my big brother, “what were you doing in your room?”

“Just homework. History homework to be exact” he explained. “There’s just too much homework in high

school. That’s why I’ve been asking Harry to come over all the time to help me.”

“OK: said Emily.

“Sorry, but I’ve got to get back. Too much homework!” said James.

I sat there with my mouth hanging opened. We had already solved the case.

The Silver Willows

By Bella

An odd, bright silver dust floated down onto the tiny egg. A large grey wyvern was watching over the egg.

His amber eyes glowing in the night, the branches of the willow stopped shaking as a slender, black griffon

leapt onto the ground. ‘’There, your egg is going to be a special one, that’s for sure’’ said the griffon.

‘’That’s why I came here, panther.’’ replied the wyvern. ‘’Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever, Dusk.’’ said panther.

The wyvern sighed, wondering why they would entrust the silver willows to an adolescent griffon.

The next few days, Dusk, and his mate, Silvia, a snow white wyvern, watched the egg in turn, carefully. One

sunrise, a full 9 moons later, the egg cracked a little, and a little more, then, a tiny square beak poked out of

the egg. The two wyverns were watching, but not helping, as the tiny wyvern would grow up a weakling if

they helped, Silvia wished she could help her little one, but knew better. After a few minutes the tiny, light

grey wyvern finally got out of his egg, it was then he noticed the two wyverns staring down at him. He

looked up at them and chirped happily, and the snow white wyvern lowered her head and nuzzled the little

wyvern, the grey, almost black wyvern nuzzled the tiny wyvern too. ‘’ I think we should name him Takae.’’

said Silvia.

Five years later, Dusk was trying to teach Takae how to fly. ‘’ Spread your wings, then flap them, it’s

simple!’’ shouted Dusk over the wind blowing in his and Takae’s ears, ‘’ but it’s too windy!’’ shouted

Takae. ‘’ Of course! That’s what makes you a great flier!’’ Dusk shouted back. ‘’ Okay, if you say so!’’

responded Takae, the wyvern flapped his wings lightly. ‘’ Flap your wings harder! Full upstroke, full

downstroke!’’ shouted Dusk, Takae was struggling, but slowly lifting off from the ground, in two hours,

Takae managed to get off the ground, his silver wings flapping with all his effort, once he did, Dusk flapped

his wings, and rose to the top of the colossal rock formation with ease, Takae managed to get halfway,

before tumbling out of the air in exhaustion. ‘’ Good try! You got halfway this time ‘’ congratulated Dusk.

Later that day, Silvia returned to the den with an entire rhodon in her talons. The wyverns ate their fill,

Silvia kept chatting about how proud she was of Takae. Later that night, Takae woke up in the middle of the

night, scared out of his mind, he had a dream, but the details where fading fast, all Takae could remember

was an albino drake, an island sinking, and an enormous, albino wyrm with paddle-like legs with talons the

size of a rukh’s, a lindwurm, maybe, thought Takae.

The next day, Takae awoke to the sound of pelicans and seagulls fishing and calling, as their den overlooked

the bay, he got out of his nest, seeing that his parents weren’t awake, he silently went into the a storage hole

in the wall of the den. He found some charcoal, and some birch bark, he grabbed the charcoal and bark,

then, he decided to sketch what he saw in his dream, after a while, he managed to make out the drake, he

was albino, with enormous, black spikes sticking out of his shoulders, rams horns on his head, and a spiked

tail, deadly in all its glory.

He wondered what the dream was all about, looking into the sunrise.
