A WEEK

Can you Rise to the Uniform Challenge? As you know, your uniform is an important part of being an IGS student, and the way you wear it represents the pride you have in being a student here, as well as in yourself. The vast majority of you follow our uniform policy fully, but some are still being challenged and receiving uniform comments.
From this week all members of staff have been asked to pay even more attention than usual to uniform. Our initial focus on looking smarter will be shirts and blouses. Please remember these basics when you are in uniform.
Girls Shirt: plain, white and tucked in with
top button fastened. No short or fitted blouses.
Boys Shirt: plain, white and tucked in with
top button fastened.
If you are seen with your shirt/blouse not tucked in, you should expect to be challenged by any member of staff and have a uniform comment recorded in your planner.
Wearing uniform correctly, and meeting all expectations placed on you by the school, so that you don't need to be challenged, helps all of us - students and staff - to focus on the most important reasons for being in school. Please help us do this by wearing your uniform correctly and with pride.
Thank you.

Is it too early to mention Christmas? Christmas is coming and rehearsals are underway for the Christmas concert. Come along and get involved; we have choirs, rock bands, orchestras and chamber groups! To ensure a high performance standard at the concert, we will not be allowing new members to join us after half term.... you have two weeks left to make that commitment.

Year 11 Work Experience On Monday 20th October 249 Year 11 students will enter the world of work for what could be the first time; they are having a week’s work experience. As a school we believe that this week is invaluable to students enabling you to experience what the work place is like compared to school. It helps you to make important decisions on your future and helps you to focus on studies ready for exams at the end of the year. The majority of Year 11 students have found their own work experience placement and are travelling all over the country; from Edinburgh to London and Manchester to Newcastle, as well as in the local community. They will have to summon the courage to meet new people, go to new places, find their way around new towns and cities (in some cases) and adapt to unfamiliar surroundings. This can be quite daunting for some but gives confidence to fall back on when you have to do it for real. We find the experience has an positive effect on you and participants come back into school with a more positive and mature outlook. From this year we are moving the work experience week to the week commencing 13th July, to coincide with the school’s Challenge and Celebration week, our Year 10 students will be taking their place on work experience week and overcoming challenges of their own. Good luck and enjoy your week!
Mrs Cowley
Are You Behaving Acceptably? You are all aware of our ICT Acceptable Use Policy…you all signed it when you were given your iPad. Your parents are all aware of our ICT Acceptable Use Policy…they also signed it when you were given your iPad. The agreement lays out what we expect from you in terms of iPad and ICT use at Ilkley Grammar School. Please re-familiarise yourself with these details – if your iPad is inspected (and we routinely do inspect them) and any of the banned apps or software appear on your iPad there will be consequences as part of our Personal Best system.

As a Student I Will: Look after my iPad computer very carefully all of the time. It will be kept in its case and stored
securely when not in my possession. Use the Apple ID account assigned to me at the initial rollout. Take responsibility for setting up a secure passwords and not sharing them with other
students. Create a lock screen for my iPad which shows my name and form. Bring it to school every day fully charged, unless I have been told not to. Take care when the iPad is transported that it is as secure as possible (e.g. not visible in a
vehicle; not left unattended on a bus; not advertise ownership of my iPad) Make sure the iPad is not subject to careless or malicious damage (e.g. as a result of horseplay) Ensure my iPad is only used for educational purposes whilst in school. Regularly back up my iPad. Allow staff to access their iPads to check for inappropriate materials. I understand that staff
will be allowed to remove inappropriate resources. I will always act on the advice of the school in the safe use of this device.
As a Student I Will Not: Use my iPad for any form of cyber bullying or use for sending, accessing, uploading or
distributing any insulting, threatening, pornographic, violent or obscene material Use my iPad for sending mass emails (spamming) Remove the iPad from its case Use my school email account for any form or commercial or financial gain Decorate or customise the iPad or its case, etc., and not allow it to be subject to graffiti and
return it to the school. This will help ensure that we are all working together to achieve success.
Take photographs or videos without the permission of the subject. I will not upload or share these images with anyone without the permission of the subject.
I will not install age-inappropriate games and content. Jailbreak my iPad. Jailbreaking is a technique where by installing third party software on the
iPad a user can remove the limitations of App installation imposed by Apple and install unsupported software. Jailbreaking voids any warranty claims and is taken very seriously by the school. This includes, but is not exclusive to any forms of Jailbreaking tools such as Cydia, evasi0n, Absinthe, greenpois0n. Any detection of this kind of software will result in sanctions and possible temporary confiscation
Use my iPad to access VPN (virtual private networks). These apps whilst available on the App store allow the user to bypass any school internet security protocols and access blocked websites or social networking sites. Apps such as Secure Line or VPN express will need to be deleted
Physically decorate, customise or use graffiti on the case Take photographs or videos without the express permission of the subject, nor upload and
share these images Delete any software I have been asked to install Make sure the iPad is not used for any illegal and/or anti-social purpose, including access to
inappropriate Internet sites. Use my iPad for any form of cyber bullying. Use my iPad for any illegal and/or anti-social purpose, including access to inappropriate
websites.

We are aware that in recent weeks a spoof school twitter account has been operating and in recent days some very unpleasant comments have been tweeted. The matter of closing this account down is now in the hands of our solicitor, and as in a recent case, we expect Twitter to fully comply with legal guidance and both remove the account and provide the details of the person or persons operating the account, when they do so. We would highly recommend that if you have been following a fake school account that you unfollow it immediately. Most of you use your iPads and social media in an acceptable manner but please remember that using an iPad is a privilege, not a right, and must be used in a responsible and ethical manner at all times. Further information on using your iPad safely and tips on eSafety can be found on Realsmart here.
Sharing Shakespeare Our all female Othello cast who are involved in producing a reduced version of ‘Othello’ as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, have been sharing their love of Shakespeare with younger students from other schools. The students attended a workshop at The Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds. The workshop was led by two actors who are working with the Shakespeare Schools Festival and worked with younger students from Chapel Haddlesey CE Primary School who are producing ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
During the workshop the students learned how to bring energy to their performances by working on reactions and sharing the action with the audience. Both companies performed a section of their play and were given feedback by the other students and workshop leaders. This led to our students focusing on how to enhance their delivery of the lines to make their character’s intentions clear. The atmospheric production, which includes live music, will be performed alongside 3 other reduced Shakespeare plays at The Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds on Saturday 18th October. Tickets cost £8.75 (£6.75 concessions) and are available from the box office on 0113 224 3801. Performances start at 7pm. Good luck girls!

Our Year 8 team played in a rugby festival at Otley and the scores were; IGS 19 v 0 Horsforth IGS 0 v 12 Benton Park IGS 5 v 7 Bingley IGS 0 v 7 PHGS
Well done to George Emsley-Sharp (7VEC) who recently won the 2014 Otley Golf Club Putting Trophy at the Annual Junior Competition Event. George is a keen golfer and is a member of the junior section of the Otley Golf Club.
Good luck to Lucy Haines (11VEB) who is taking part in an International Orienteering Competition in Norway on Friday 17th October.
Well done to our Year 8 football team got their 2014-15 campaign off to a great start with two wins on Wednesday night when we hosted a central venue fixture at the school fields. The boys were out to impress following the trials last week. The results were:
IGS 0-2 St Mary's IGS 3-2 Horsforth: Finlay Grimshaw (8PDH) 2 and Adam Haw (8PDH)

Congratulations to Emma Powell (9JP), has been busy impressing the climbing world again. This time, Emma’s exploits in the Thunderdome Competition at Buxton University have got the climbing world talking. Emma, who now competes regularly in the adult category in competitions, took her place in the line-up in the jaw dropping Thunderdome Competition at the weekend. It’s not your run of the mill climbing competition; Thunderdome involves making your way over a route of suspended climbing blocks, hung from the domed ceiling, in the quickest time possible. Definitely not for the faint hearted! Emma made it through to the final in the adult category and secured a magnificent 3rd place. Watch her qualifying here http://youtu.be/UDXl7oxQjV0 Emma’s next big competition is ‘Ice Fest’ on the 1st November at the Ice Factor, Kinlocheven in Scotland, where once again she will be competing in the senior’s category.

Post 16 Open Evening
Thursday 6th
November
Our Post 16 Open Evening gives students a chance to
investigate the opportunities available to them at Ilkley
Grammar School. The evening involves a programme of
subject seminars. Students are asked to look at the
schedule in advance and consider the sessions that they
would like to attend. There will also be a presentation in
F Hall with Miss Haigh, Head of Post 16, to get an
overview of provision and expectations at Ilkley Grammar
School.
The first sessions will commence promptly at
6.30pm. Entry and registration at Main Reception from
6.00pm. There will be an opportunity to see the facilities
of Post 16 prior to commencement of the evening.
This evening is the first of our Post 16 events to help
students focus on their future and especially to help them
decide whether Ilkley Grammar School’s Post 16 is the
most suitable option for them.

Year 11 Revision Tip 3 - Mnemonics
What is it? A way to turn information into an easier to remem-ber format.
Handy hint: Don’t overdo the use of mnemonics. They are very useful on a few occasions.
Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain
Storage method used.
Strong stimuli
What to do? Use a type of mnemonic that suits you: Acronym—create a word with the first letter of what you need to remember Acrostics—ordered list Rhymes and Songs—can be cheesy, but very easy to remember
