This is a place where the refined gastronomic tradition reigns supreme. At the Restaurant of the

Pousada, guests can taste the authentic cuisine of the Minho Region. The main dish is the Bacalhau à Santa Luzia, a codfish dish which is a speciality of this area. It is prepared in the oven with onion, tomatoes and

mayonnaise, and served with potato puree. With a range of tempting offers for dessert, one’s

attention turns to the delicious Torta de Viana. The experience is only complete if accompanied by the

best locally produced nectar, since Viana do Castelo was elected as the City of Wine in 2011, by the Board

of Directors of the Portuguese Wine Cities Association.

Imposingly high on the top of the Monte de Santa Luzia, visitors can see the Temple of the Sagrado

Coração de Jesus, the ex-libris of the city.It is worth sensing the emotion of ascending on the

funicular and finally enjoying the panorama from one of Portugal’s most beautiful viewpoints.

Back in town, the visit continues to the churches and museums. The Cathedral, the romantic Das

Almas Chapel and the Museu do Traje (Costumes Museum) are a must if one wants to understand

the culture of the Minho Region. Located between palaces and buildings in Manueline renaissance

and baroque styles, the quarters of contemporary, more audacious architecture of more daringtraces,

like the Praça da Liberdade, are likewise a must.

MONTE DE SANTA LUZIA SANCTUARY

In gastronomic terms, one can say that the Minho Region is synonymous of good

cuisine, and especially in Viana, where the quality is so high that restaurants

compete with each other for the title of the best and most original codfish recipe.

Among the most famous dishes, we will find the Codfish Viana Style, the

Sarrabulho Rice and the Rice with Lamprey. Regional wine production

is mainly composed of “verde” wines, which serve as accompaniment for the

characteristic fish dishes of the area. But, due to the freshness and lightness, is also highly appreciated as an aperitifThe Torta de Viana, the vermicelli with eggs (similar

to milk rice), the French toast and the custard that are typical desserts of Viana as well as a temptation for even the most

demanding palates.
