Center for Diversity

in Engineering

2014 Summer Programs (Middle & High School Level)

Mission:

“to increase the recruitment and retention of students

from underrepresented populations in science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)

pursuing degrees in engineering and applied sciences at

all academic stages.”

The goal of U.Va.'s Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is to instill an

interest in engineering among middle school students, defined as rising

sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Participants will enjoy two weeks full

of interactive activities and classes with U.VA.'s professors and graduate

students from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences which will

introduce them to various disciplines, including aerospace, electrical,

materials, chemical and mechanical engineering.

2014 ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

Program Dates: June 15 - June 28, 2014 (10 days)

The primary goal of the Center for the Diversity in

Engineering's Introduction to Engineering (ITE)

program, established in 1987 as MITE, is to introduce

rising high school juniors and seniors to the theory

and practice of engineering through lectures, labs, and

exercises in engineering design, applied math, and basic

science. Participants will also be introduced to various

engineering disciplines through lectures and demonstrations.

Program Dates: June 22 - June 27, 2014 (6 days)

The LEAD Computer Science Institute (CSI) exists to expose academically

promising middle to high school students from diverse communities to both

colleges and careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

(STEM) fields. Moreover, a major premise of the program recognizes that a

better-informed high achieving student can better discern the value of choosing

a career in a STEM field and is appropriately prepared to apply to the more

competitive universities that offer STEM education. The LEAD CSI Program

provides rising ninth, tenth and eleventh grade students with the opportunity

to explore the field of computer science. Students gain increased knowledge

and practical skills development during the program.
