Pastor’s letter for September newsletter “Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people.” I Peter 2:10

Identity is a big topic in our world today. Whether it is party affiliation or which presidential candidate you can or cannot relate to, or whether it is gender issues or racial classifications, people are looking for someone to affiliate with, a place to belong.

In the midst of all of this searching and categorizing there is a gift that we must not overlook. We have an identity that is primary and a place to belong that is full of comfort and hope. We are God’s people bought with the precious blood of Christ Jesus our Lord. We are Christians baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are bound together in a worshipping community gathered around God’s word and life giving sacraments.

Whatever other affiliations we have, whatever other groups we belong to or identify with, whatever issue we are struggling with, searching about – they are all secondary, they all come under the reign of Christ the King. And if those groups take us away from that primary loyalty, if they teach a doctrine that is contrary to what we believe then we need to prayerfully reorient ourselves through the power of the Holy Spirit to get back to a place where God’s word is respected and His love is shared.

For this reason, we are lifting up in all our teaching during the coming year, the Small Catechism. It is an appropriate place to have our identity refreshed and it is a great time to do it as we are on the eve of the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. It is small and easy to read and packed full of the truth of God’s Word. A copy will be provided for you if you don’t have one readily available and we will be encouraging one another in these Christian basics.

It is a joy to be in fellowship with you – thanks be to God that he has made us His people. Pastor Sally

SPECIAL APPEAL FOR September: Institute for Lutheran Theology

Though headquartered in distant Brookings, South Dakota, the Institute of Lutheran Theology (ILT) has a long reach around the world. Focusing largely on teaching conveyed through internet resources, ILT has become a reliable and dynamic resource for teaching sound Lutheran Theology to pastors, seminarians, and interested lay people around the nation and the world. Our own most direct benefit as a congregation comes from the outstanding video courses presented to students of the ILT class which meets weekly during Sunday school hour in the CYC rooms in the Sunday school wing under the expert leadership of Larry Rinehart. ILT has grown significantly in its outreach and depth of offerings and continues to expand. As an LCMC approved seminary it helps to ensure that LCMC will receive qualified new pastors and also help to develop a more educated laity. Your support of ILT is vital to its continuance as one of the finest Lutheran schools of theology and you can do so this month of September by giving generously through the green envelopes located in the pews (if giving by check make payable to Saint Paul Lutheran Church with ILT in the memo section).

"Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices." Bell choir practice will begin again Tuesday, September 6 at 6:30 PM in the choir loft. New members are

always welcome. Some musical experience would be helpful.

OUR DAILY BREAD: Our dessert for September is Sugar Cakes. Use your favorite recipe and place (2) 2” cookies in each bag. We need 360 bags by 9 am on Friday, September 16. If you are able to make some, please sign the sheet in the narthex Thanks!

Men’s Ministry: Hey guys start your Saturday off on a truly blessed footing by joining us for the Men’s Breakfast on Saturday September 10th at 8:00 AM. We always start our time together with a satisfying meal and informal conversation and then engage in an enriching bible study. This year we have some interesting new material entitled “Stuff They Didn’t Teach Me In Sunday School,” short informal Bible Study DVD segments followed by some discussion together. We will launch this study in the Book of Joshua and hopefully get some new insights into the rich meaning of the passages we will be dealing with. We are usually done around 9:30 AM. Sign up in the Narthex.

Prayer Corner

Why We Say Amen Certainly, Christ made God’s many promises come true. For

that reason, because of our message, people also honor God by saying “Amen!” 2 Corinthians 1:20

The little word AMEN indicates strong affirmation and means “let it be so.” It expresses the faith we should have when we pray. Christ said, “Have faith that you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matt. 21:22). He also said, “That’s why I tell you to have faith that you have already received whatever you pray for, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24). The Samaritan woman received what she asked for because she didn’t stop asking and firmly believed. In response the Lord said to her,” Woman, you have strong faith! What you wanted will be done for you” (Matt. 15:28). James also said, “When you ask for something don’t have any doubts. A person who has doubts is like a wave that is blown by the wind and tossed by the sea” (James 1:6) So as the author of Ecclesiastes said, “The end of something is better than its beginning” (Ecclesiastes 7:8). For at the end of your prayers, you say Amen with heartfelt confidence and faith. When you say Amen, the prayer is sealed, and it will certainly be heard.

From Through Faith Alone, 365 devotional readings from Martin Luther

Martin Luther is telling us to have faith in God’s answer to our prayers. The response God gives us may not be the one we expect or desire. But it will be the correct and blessed answer, from the One God who loves us. Pray with faith and conviction. Pray with belief in God. Pray with acceptance of God’s will be done. May your prayer life grow, deepen and be strengthened through faith.

Our mid-week Pastor led Bible Study is held on Thursdays at 9 am and 6 pm. On September 8, 15, and 22. We will begin our study on the Book of Revelation, some people think the Book of Revelation is full of scary stuff, but God has given us this message to bring us hope. It was written to believers who were struggling under harsh persecution and God wanted them to know that he has the final word and it is a word of cheer for those who trust in Him. Join us for this study as we learn:

That God has a plan

That He encourages us to focus on Jesus

That He assures us that He will defeat all evil

That the victory that we have through Christ begins now

We too can endure suffering and will be upheld by the grace of God

Join us for this engaging and fortifying study starting

September 8 at 9 am or 6 pm

THANK YOU

I would like to thank the Pastors for their visits while I was in the hospital, and the congregation for their phone calls, cards, visits and especially their prayers. Betty Wantland

Dear Pastor Paul and Pastor Sally, I want to thank you so much for the visits and calls about my surgery, it meant a lot to me. Also to thank the church members for the cards, and prayers, I know prayers help. I am better now and hope to be in church and I am going back to work tonight. God is good and helps us to get through all the rough times with help from our church friends. Thank you so much, Peggy Shaffer

LCMC LCMC is not a bricks and mortar church body. It has no designated headquarters, no college, or seminary, rather it allows congregations to more fully engage in their own mission priorities and recommends seminaries that it has established a relationship with in serving its candidates for ministry. What this means is that congregations like our own are encouraged to draw upon the richness and depth of many fine Lutheran and other publishing houses in determining material to use in church and elsewhere. You will notice that much of our Sunday school material is from Concordia Publishing House. Another good publisher of quality books is the American Lutheran Publicity Bureau, which we often use for the Theological Book Discussion. Check out our library and ask the pastor’s for some good recommended reads. This coming year is the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, and what a great time to learn more about our wonderful living heritage. One book I highly recommend is the Lutheran Study Bible from Concordia Publishing, check it out at cph.org/lutheranbible, it is often on sale and available in many great formats.

A Decision America Tour 2016 Invitation. Franklin Graham, the son of famous evangelist Billy Graham, and the President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, is traveling to all fifty state capitols to lead prayer rallies in which Christians from all over those states gather together to pray for the nation, their states, and to be inspired to stand up for the Gospel in our times. The rallies are not partisan in nature and Church Council has approved our sending a group to Harrisburg on the day the Decision 2016 tour arrives in our capitol city, Thursday September 15th. The rally lasts for one hour and starts at 12:00. Those who wish to go as a group can meet us here at the church at 10:30 AM that day so we pray before leaving and car pool to the state capitol. More information on this important and inspirational event can be found at https://decisionamericatour.com/tour/pennsylvania on the Web/ There one can also find a 30-day prayer calendar to use through the weeks leading up to the event.

In recognition of Saint Paul Lutheran/Wolf’s Church veterans, Church Council, Worship & Music and the Cemetery Board have graciously approved our participation in a wreath laying ceremony again this year (previously held in 2013 as part of our 250th Anniversary celebration). Saint Paul/Wolf’s will be working together by marking the graves of our veterans during the upcoming Christmas holiday season. We have several hundred former church members laying at rest in our cemetery, 202 of whom are veterans from past wars. In honor of their great service, would you kindly consider donating $15.00 to sponsor a wreath? Our goal this year would be to have ALL 202 veterans honored during this special ceremony. All sponsorships will be handled here at the church, filed by our Financial assistant (Carol Frey) and must be in no later than Sunday, November 20, 2016. The wreath laying ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, December 10th at 10:00AM at both Wolf’s and Bott’s Cemeteries. The wreaths are being ordered through Royer’s (West York) and all proceeds will go directly to the Cemetery Board to assist with ongoing maintenance and upkeep of these hallowed grounds. Congregational help will be needed that day in order to successfully place all wreaths (more information to come closer to the time-please mark your calendars now to help). We are also responsible for all clean up after the holiday season. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
