Have a Ball at Snowbowl! Put away your putter and grab your snow skis. When Forest Highlands’ two top-rated Tom Weiskopf golf courses close from November to May, residents can look forward to enjoying winter sports at Arizona Snowbowl, just 14 miles from downtown Flagstaff. At this ultimate mountain playground, skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing and cross-country opportunities abound. Snowbowl, one of the country’s 10 oldest continuously operating ski areas, is perched on the flanks of Agassiz Peak, the second highest of the majestic San Francisco Peaks at 12,350 feet. The area encompasses more than 770 acres with 32 trails on varying terrain, and is blessed with an average of 260 inches of snowfall per year. Ski runs are geared for all ages and skill levels, accessible by four chairlifts that afford views of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. From smooth, gentle beginner slopes to sculpted corduroy cruises, moguls and bowls, you can carve out your own territory or take on a two-mile run. The backside of the mountain is a free-skier’s dream with terrain comparable to Mammoth and Taos, and is considered one of the best backcountry skiing areas in the Southwest. After a day on the slopes, gather with friends and family around cozy fireplaces at the lodge at the base of the mountain to share and compare experiences.

Tickets to Paradise The ski season generally runs from mid-December to mid-April, snow permitting. To avoid lines, powderheads can purchase lift tickets at www.arizonasnowbowl.com. A child’s season pass (ages 8 to 18) is only $99 with the purchase of an adult pass for $699. Arizona Snowbowl also offers special group discounts, so why not plan a hassle-free “ski day” with 15 of your closest friends and neighbors? Your rentals will be waiting upon your arrival at your group’s specially designated meeting area.

Expert Instruction Whether you’re a first-time skier or snowboarder, an expert, or somewhere in between, Arizona Snowbowl’s Ski & Ride School has qualified instructors ready to help you improve your skills and techniques. The school is registered with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI). Snowbowl has the best learning terrain in the entire Southwest with over 50 acres and two chairlifts in the renowned Hart Prairie beginner area. This is definitely where Arizonans come to learn to ski and board. Group and private lessons for all ability levels are available.

Head for the Hills The sledding hills, that is. The Wing Mountain Snow Play area, located about three miles past Snowbowl Road, is a safe place for families and kids to romp in the snow, build a snowman, cross country ski or hop on a sled and zoom downhill. No downhill skiing or trick snowboarders here. A well-maintained paved parking lot is a short walking distance to the snow play areas. You’ll enjoy the convenience of restrooms, and food and drink concessions on weekends and holidays. Fees are $10 per car (subject to change without notice). Hours of operation are 9 am to 4 pm daily. For conditions at Wing Mountain, call 928.226.0493 or visit www.snowplayaz.com.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Don your foot gear and head to the Flagstaff Nordic Center to enjoy miles of marked snowshoe trails. The Center is located in the Coconino National Forest 15 miles northwest of Flagstaff. You’ll derive excellent cardiovascular benefits as you glide atop a snowy white blanket. For more information, call 928.220.0550 or visit www.flagstaffnordiccenter.com.
