Benjamin Banneker is a famous African American mathematician,amateur astronomer. 3. He advanced the pocket watch into a clock. 4. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, November 9 th , 1731. 5. His father was a slave who bought his freedom of Mary Benneky, an Englishwoman's daughter. He had three younger sisters.

Banneker grew up on his father's farm with his three sisters. 6. Benjamin was schooled by his grandmother. He loved math. 7. Joseph Ellicott was an amateur mathematician and astronomer and gave Banneker books on astronomy and mathematics as well as instruments for observing the stars. This started his interest in astronmy.
