Banneker HS will receive a full modernization at the former Shaw Junior High School site at 925 Rhode Island Ave, NW in Ward 6 and after modernization will be able to accommodate an enrollment of 800 students by SY2025. The modernization will achieve, at a minimum, LEED BD+C Schools - Gold certification upon completion at the modernized site in 2021 with a goal to be Net Zero Energy ready. Project Status Summary of Work Completed from October 16 to October 30, 2020 Construction o Site work continued. o Interior trade work continued. (electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work) o Roofing and building exterior envelope elements continued. o Preliminary testing and commissioning of building systems continues through the end of the year. o Laying out and installing interior framing and atrium stairs continued. o Window and curtain wall installations continued. o Waterproofing and fireproofing installation continued. o Site utility construction continued. Design o Exterior signage details continued to be refined. o The design team continued to explore solar panel placement opportunities, PV canopy locations, and NZE Ready requirements. o Cabinetry/millwork items were reviewed. Next steps from October 30 to November 13, 2020 Construction o Interior trade work will continue. (Electrical work, Plumbing work)

o Laying out and installing interior framing and studs will continue. o Reviewing window openings and dimensions will continue. o Waterproofing, fireproofing, and sprinkler work will continue. o Roofing work is close to completion; weathertight and detailing and parapet work will

continue. o Site utility construction will continue. o Staircase installation will continue. (City Place Stair at Floor 1 and Staircase A)

Design o Exterior signage details will continue. o Reviewing locations of water fountains and waste receptacles on site will continue. o The Project Team will continue to work on Public Art items with the DGS Percent for Art

Team. ▪ The project team will refine selected artwork for the entry façade and clockwork

(accelerated art locations) o The team will continue to review solar panel placement, including PV canopy use, and

LEED and/or Net Zero Energy project requirements.

DPR Updates

• Grindline is continuing to develop a preliminary concept for Shaw Skate Park, which will be based on the feedback provided by the community through the online survey and during the first community meeting. The slide deck presented at the first virtual community meeting with the results from the survey is available here.

• DPR and the project team will review preliminary concept of the Skate Park in upcoming weeks.

• DPR held a virtual Dog Park community meeting on September 30 and the park layout has been finalized. Please check here for additional information.

Community Outreach Update

• The DPR basketball courts are now offline and are scheduled to back online by late summer 2021, aligned with the opening of the Banneker HS modernization project.

• DPR will be responsible for all messaging to its stakeholders as it relates to the renovation of the dog park, basketball courts, and skate park based upon the project schedule. For questions, please reach out to DPR’s Chief of External Affairs, Tommie Jones at [email protected].

• Messaging/communications regarding upcoming construction activities will continue.

• The project team will continue to explore upcoming student engagement activities for SY2020-21.
