Why New Zealand?• The first wave of Indian migration to New

Zealand was from 1890 – 1920.• This was due to overpopulation and

underemployment in India.• Families had to move overseas to earn money

to pay for weddings and the rising cost of living in India.

What jobs did they do?Initially only Indian men came to New Zealand. They intended to earn money and return to India. Most lived in or around the Auckland region.

They did jobs such as • Flax workers• Drain diggers• Scrub Cutters• Bottle collectors• Fruit & vegetable sellers

Later Indian Migrations• After WWII women

migrated to join their husbands in New Zealand.

• During the 1970’s many Indians moved to NZ as refugees from Uganda and in the 1980’s from Fiji.

New Indian Immigrants• Have come to New

Zealand to earn more money and to provide a good standard of living and a better standard of education for their children.

Influence on NZ Society• New Zealand society has been influenced in a

number of ways by Indian immigration. –Bollywood movies are a regular part of

movie screening in many New Zealand cinemas. –Many New Zealanders attend Diwali

celebrations.

of traditional Indian values. They are also important in other cultures..

Food• With the arrival of more Indian people in New

Zealander traditional food has been easier to obtain here as the Indian community has begun to grow their own chillies, coriander, garlic and eggplant.

• There is also many specialist Indian suppliers and restaurants in New Zealand.

Religion• Most Indian New Zealanders are either Hindu,

Muslim or Sikh.

Zealanders of Indian descent. • Many Indian sports clubs have been

established. The main sports they are involved in are cricket and hockey.

• Many New Zealanders of Indian descent are in the national cricket and hockey teams.
