    15th

Annual National Solar TourScheduled annually for the first Saturday in October, in conjunction with

National Energy Awareness Month, the American Solar Energy Society

(ASES) National Solar Tour is the world's largest grassroots solar event. The event offers participants the opportunity to tour homes and buildings

to see how their neighbors are using solar energy, energy efficiency, and othersustainable technologies, to reduce their monthly utility bills, and help tackle

climate change. In 2009, nationwide, over 150,000 attendees visited some 5,000 buildings

    in 3,000 participating communities.

Now in its 15th year, this event is coordinated nationally by the nonprofit

    ASES (www.ases.org).

In 2010, the Indiana Renewable Energy Association (InREA) will be

hosting the 2nd annual Indianapolis tour.

In 2010, Cool Creek Nature Center installed a 15,680 watt solar photovoltaic array consisting of 64 @ 245-watt solar

modules. This PV system provides an example of the most current installation practices for medium-sized roof mounted

installations. The nature center is open between 10am and 5pm. A representative from ECI Wind and Solar will be presentto answer any questions, and assist patrons on the solar tour. The Nature Center is located in Cool Creek Park, and serves as

the central hub for many different indoor and outdoor activities in a beautiful 90-acre park.

6 KIB (Keep Indianapolis Beautful), 1029 Fletcher Ave, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46203-1402. 317.264.7565.On the day of the Solar Tour, this site is only available for tours between 2 and 4 PM. KIB tours are also available thefirst Monday of the month at 4 PM. Please visit the KIB website,www.kib.org for more information.

KIBI's new award-winning office building includes the following green features: white "cool" roof, 10,000 gallon cistern to

recycle rain water, daylighting, rain garden, wind energy, and pervious pavement (allows rainwater to soak through). Thebuilding is expected to use 21% less energy than a standard design. KIB was the first civic Indiana nonprofit to receive LEED

    Gold green building certification.

    See www.kibi.org/building/index.htm for more information.

7 Schmidt Associates,320 E Vermont St, Indianapolis, IN 46204-2126. 317.263.6226.The solar canopy is comprised of 20 @ 150 kW PV (Photovoltaic) panels. The system is grid tied and was completed in

August 2006. The solar canopy replaced a deteriorating fabric canopy and so additionally provides a passive cooling benefit to

the south faade of the building. It was designed to make the technology visible (versus putting the array on the roof).

8 Hilton Garden Inn Indianapolis Downtown, 10 East Market St, Indianapolis, IN 46204-3027. 317.955.9700.Located just 1 block from Monument Circle, the Hilton features a 4.05 kWh PV array on the top of the 16-story hotel. The

actual electricity produced represents only a small portion of total energy consumption, but does help shave peak demand onhighest consumption days. The Hilton is on the national register for historic preservation.

Note: Hourly escorted tours will be offered of this installation. Because of the need to climb a 1-floor spiral staircase, flatshoes are required and casual clothes are recommended. Attendees must be over 12 years of age.

9 Lugar Center for Renewable Energy,.IUPUI, ET Building, 799 W. Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5195.The Lugar Center/IUPUI will be demonstrating and explaining the operation of solar thermal system (Evacuated Tube Heat Pipecollector) using propylene glycol as a transfer fluid. Weather permitting; the mobile test system will be outside. Pressurizedpropylene glycol systems can be used in winter when a straight water system would freeze. With the right type of heat exchanger, this type of system can be used for water heating or heating buildings.

IUPUI students will be on hand in the lobby of ET to greet and guide visitors to the location for the demonstration andpresentation. Visitors are encouraged to park in the North Street Parking Garage, which is located across the street from theEngineering and Technology (ET) building, and located at the northeast corner of West Michigan and Blake Streets. To receivefree, validated parking, visitors MUST bring their parking ticket from the garage with them inside to have it stamped.

10 Indy Power Systems, 15309 Stony Creek Way, Noblesville, IN, 46060-4382. Phone: 317.370.0559.Indy Power Systems designs and builds systems that blends different sources of energy, including wind, solar, battery storage, generators, and the electric utility grid. The system, called the Multi-Flex, can optimize the flow of energy so that price andperformance targets can be met. For example, when wind power generates energy at night, the system can store the energy for useduring the day. Excess power can be sold back to the electric utility where feed-in tariffs are allowed.

The system can also blend different types of batteries, enabling high-powered yet expensive Lithium-ion batteries to workseamlessly with low-cost Lead-Acid batteries. This Hybrid battery pack can be applied to the grid or to battery packs for Hybridand Battery Electric Vehicles. Using the Multi-Flex, the cost of batteries for an electric vehicle can be reduced by 50% or more.On display will be a solar panel charging a Hybrid battery pack installed in an electric golf car.Note: Because the tour is of a working laboratory, attendees must be over 12 years of age.

11 Johnson-Melloh Contractors, 5925 Stockberger Place, Indianapolis, IN 46241-5402. Phone: 317.244.5993.The Johnson-Melloh facility is visible from I-465 just north of I-70 west. They have installed a 5.2 kW photovoltaic array, three 1.5 kW vertical wind turbines, and a hybrid wind/solar parking lot light. Both the solar array and the wind turbines

offset their electrical usage. The parking lot light is LED and is unusual in that it is fully self-contained with no power from

any other source. (Complimentary soft drinks and cookies available.)

13 StellarWind, 8440 W 82nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46278-1062. Phone: 317.329.0834.Founded in 2007, Stellarwind produces green fuel from algae using photons from sunlight and CO2 as input to algae for producing

biomass. This biomass can be used directly in coal firing or to extract fuel. This entire process is performed using their patentpending technology, the photobioreactor (PBR). In 2009, Stellarwind obtained a production contract from Bioalternative for 12million gallons/year. Stellarwind expects to further reduce costs by using the CO2 available as production waste.
