Indirect Speech Act

Searle talked a lot about indirect speech acts. He explained further that indirect speech act is the condition in which one illocutionary is performed indirectly by way of performing another (1975: 60).

Grundy also said “directness and indirectness can be seen from the agreement between the form and function of sentences.”

Declarative Used as an orderThe meaning of this utterance is kind of order something like this “jangan ajak aku bermain judi lagi !”.

terlalu berhati hati.

Declarative Used as an orderThis utterance is from the bodyguard said to the boss, the meaning is “jaga diri nona sendiri, kami tidak bisa sepenuhnya terus memperhatikan nona!”

ConclusionAfter analyzing this movie the researcher concluded that most of utterance that has been categorized into indirect speech act is form of declarative sentence but it does not mean that the function is not for making an assertion, it has different function such making an orders, give a command, making questions and etc.
